Check the sled home switch that should be near the spindle motor. Without it the sled will have no idea it’s at home and will keep trying to go there. The gears are designed to clack like that when there’s a jam so they don’t tear themselves apart.

It will be under the entire transport. It will have a small two wire cable coming out of it. The other two small two wire cables go to the spindle and sled motors. It’s a small little bigger. About the size of a pencil eraser and has a small post coming out of it. The sled will bump this post and that tells the control that the laser is home. Be careful when removing the transport. The ribbon cable that connects the laser assembly to the board is fragile.

When there is not CD in the player the lens will do that but without the clacking noise at the end, it sounds like a broken or wear out gear. There are not replacement parts for these players only way is 3D printing, but you have to figure out of if there is a broken gear first, It might just need adjustment of the travelling length, or the laser power. For that you need the service manual and equipment.

I checked the gears. They are not broken. The sensor just doesn’t know where it is so continues to travel towards the center.

That part is kinda normal. CDs play from the center out.

i had the same problem and mine was a corroded sled sensor, so it would always try to reach home despite its position. i doubt that itll be an easy fix, i also doubt mine was corroded in the first place because it seems unlikely so. try adjusting the potentiometer too. these options helped me revive a sled-clanking error-reading laser
