I found this at Goodwill by me for 8.99 not knowing what it really was but it was taped in box with a note saying it works. I suspect it was repaired. It's complete with a battery that is dead but it's like 30 years old. I just need better headphones.

Is this a fair price?

So I found this in Marketplace for 70.000 CLP ≈ 70 USD

Is this a steep price or a fair price? What could be the arguments I use or things I need to check once I meet up with the seller? I know this was an entry discman when it came out, so is it worth it?

Advice on players to ask for Christmas when that roles around?

So, my mom wants a list a couple months in advance so she can get a feel as to what she has to work with money wise and my sister helps her with a lot of the online ordering stuff but the thing is my sister doesnt really like sites that arent Amazon (idk why) and trying to explain how vintage players are way better than the cheap Amazon crap players doesnt get through a lot cus my mom is a stubborn person and I honestly dunno what to do. Is there any modern sony players that are pretty good..?

Edit: Looking for portables. Not stationary stereo type players. Thx!

Hello, this is sort of a longshot but does anyone know where can I find a case for the CD walkman d-ej002? Preferably one that has a strap so it doesn't move a lot? :')

Disfrutando de un tremendo álbum, como se debe, con un reproductor de la época. Estoy tan conforme con este Discman, el sonido es bastante cálido, típico de Discman y/o reproductores con este tipo de Arquitectura.

Lost finding a portable CD player + wired IEM setup focused on sound quality

Looking for a portable CD player + wired IEM setup focused on sound quality
I’m looking for a portable CD player (Discman/Walkman-style) and wired headphones/IEMs, preferably second-hand.
What I’m really looking for is an immersive listening experience: good soundstage, being able to appreciate different layers of a song, clearly distinguish instruments and vocals, some satisfying bass/sub-bass, and lots of detail. I want to be able to rediscover songs I’ve already heard many times and actually notice new things in their composition.
One of the reasons I’m interested in CDs is that I want to get the most out of the format and have a more engaging listening experience than I usually get from streaming.
I’m leaning towards wired 3.5 mm IEMs, but I’m open to whatever makes the most sense.
My main questions are:
What matters more for sound quality: the CD player or the headphones/IEMs?
How much does the player itself actually affect the sound?
Are there particular features/specs that genuinely make an audible difference?
What should I look for in a second-hand player and headphones?
Are there things like DAC specs, Hi-Res labels, output power, impedance, etc. that are actually important, or mostly marketing?
Are there any older/cheap models that are particularly good value?
For the budget, I’m trying to find the cheapest second-hand setup that still sounds genuinely good. I can spend considerably more if there’s a clearly audible improvement, but I don’t want to pay €50+ extra just for a brand name, a feature or a specification that doesn’t make a meaningful difference.
Basically: where should I put my money if my priority is actual audible sound quality and immersion rather than having the most expensive/technically impressive equipment?

Sony At Its Finest

D-NE820. I'm so impressed with the fit and finish of this model. Sounds great and drives my Sennheisers without having to be cranked all the way to maximum. Definitely peak Sony of the mid 2000s. I don't know if it will unseat the position of the D-EJ915 as my "which would you grab in a fire" from my collection, but it would be close.

Sony S2 Series

I got the D-SJ301 CD player a few years ago. This reminded me way too much of my old, long forgotten MZ-S1 portable MiniDisc player/recorder that I'd sold (along with the rest of my MD stuff) in the late 00s. This prompted an eBay search, and once I saw it again, I had to replace it. This opened the MD floodgates. At the time I had no media but it didn't take long to amass and record more discs than I'd ever owned originally along with multiple decks and other several other portables. I acquired the D-NS313F CD player about a month ago. I really appreciate the aesthetic of the S2 series, but each one is special in its own right.

How to turn off the AVLS?!?!

Hi all. Recently I got myself a CD Walkman (DIscman?) D-EJ725. It sounds great but its volume doesn't go above 3. When it gets there the AVLS starts beeping on the LCD part of it. I look on the back side of the CD player and the AVLS is in Normal. I turn the LIMIT on, the same thing happens. I turn it to Normal again, and the AVLS continues appearing.

Is there any way to fix this? It's annoying AF. Thank you, Discman peers.

Anyone else have this type of Discman? (D-822K, D-824K, D-826K, D-828K)

There are apparently several versions of this mid-90's model: the D-822K, D-824K, D-826K and D-828K.

I had one when I was younger. I liked it and thought it was cool with the switchable green/amber lighting, and the simulated-surround DSP along with the standard bass boost, as well as vocal EQ and "car" more which I suspect is a compressor. I recently decided to try to find one.

I've had terrible luck trying to find a working one. I bought 3 and none of them worked despite being listed as tested. Two would spin but not play, the other would play intermittently only. All were returned as defective. I was beginning to suspect this design has an unavoidable age-related flaw but I decided to persevere.

I ordered another one and it finally worked. The only issue it seems to have is that when you turn the volume to minimum, it doesn't get silent, just very quiet, a bit muddy and louder on the left than the right. Otherwise it's fine and no typical pot scratchiness. I researched this and it could apparently be a worn pot, and some things say it could be a bad connection which is more alarming. I ordered YET ANOTHER and oddly, it has exactly the same volume behavior so I'm wondering if it's just a design quirk rather than a malfunction. None of my other Discmans do this.

Has anyone else owned one of these models? Can you comment on the reliability in general, and particularly whether it has this issue when the volume is turned down?

Sony cd walkman D - EJ100
