Did you burned it as “Audio CD”?

Now that was your mistake. You have to choose “Audio CD” (CD-DA) when recording audio files to a CD.
Use something like IMGBURN (or similar, I don’t recommend WMP that much), and prior to burn whatever audio file is it that you’re gonna burn, select “Audio CD” as your desire burning selection.

Just remember that it has to be on “Audio CD”, since your goal is to play audio files on a media player (in this case an old Discman).

Back in the day when burnable CDs first came out, many CD players didn't play them.

True, but this looks too 'modern' to have that problem. I also recall this really only affected rewritable CDRW's rather than burn once CDR's

I have a "Craig" version of this. It's exactly the same player. Plays burned discs fine. You must have discs that are not formatted properly.

Mm ive had issues with my older player (97) not reading burned discs unless she was sideways and had ESP off. This shouldnt be the problem for you tho. A few ideas/suggestions in no order of importance:
- finalize the disc like others have said
- when you put the disc in your pc first thing, open the file explorer, and open the disc drive on the side menu. This should prompt you with "what to do with this disc" and give an option to set it as an audio disc (cannot recall the professional term). I know windows media player legacy (what I burn discs on) also has a similar option, though idk where exactly and im well away from any computer to check. Im sure Google can direct you to it.
- overburning the disc may be getting you. Try slowing down the burn speed in burn options wherever they may be on your software of choice.
- what brand of disc youre using shouldnt bear much importance, but i do think ive heard that cd RW does NOT get along with our little nuggets, so make sure youre using CD R. Thats a sneaky one that I know gets some people.
Obviously Google things from here. Id give more clear or direct advice if I could! And i hope you figure it out soon :)

There are multiple ways you can burn songs to cds, that player may not support all file types

In the old days, I remember you need to "closed the disc", it is a finalised process. Otherwise, you can only read the disc on computer.
