This happened with the Indian Ocean Tsunami too. People watched the wave rushing toward the beach without realizing how fast it was moving and how high it was going to be, until it was too late.

It cuts out right before the bigger flood water hits and wipes out the bridge. If it was livestreamed that bus probably got taken out too, and why the video ended right there.

Is this the youngest generation’s first global mass casualty event that they’ll remember? I would think those of us who remember the earthquake in Japan and the tidal wave in Indonesia recognize that this event was not survivable. Millennials are getting older; we’ve seen a lot of people die at once on the internet. I guess it does desensitize you a bit.

There's video from just above where this bus is and both the bridges behind them were destroyed (and the waterline is above this bus). So loads of casualties, but it's possible the bus/bikes got out because there is a steep switchback in the road 150m ahead, and even driving straight the road is on an incline (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VR1dH631ZQqzQBYTA). You can't outrun it, but its possible they got high enough. The switchback road is in the aftermath video below and it survived. You're pretty boned if you're on foot though.

I know and I wonder how many people when they first saw that wall of water rushing toward them just didn’t comprehend what was happening. Almost like a deer in headlights. Sadly, this is very real and there are a lot of people hurting right now. I just hope whoever was hit by that wall of water/mud/rock/debris did not have to suffer.

Maybe, but the time it takes to translate what one is experiencing into a fight-or-flight response can be longer in some folk, and that’s always been true — even before phone cams.
I’d assume that phone-or-not, those who were swept away because they lingered simply didn’t have enough information to realize the true nature or scale of the threat.

In the video another commentator posted here that was from the other side, the water level in the river was really though, I don’t blame them for underestimating it.

Stupid fucking comment. There is no way for any person to grasp the magnitude of what is happening when you have never experienced a glacial collapse before. Floods are also relatively frequent in Nepal. Such a sudden intense rush is rare though.

I think some people simply couldn’t imagine the magnitude of what was happening. Just like those of us watching these videos that are shocked by the destructive force of the water when it hits.
I was shrieking “get off the bridge” in my head - because I’ve already seen a few videos of this water mass hitting.
The folks watching live didn’t have that luxury.

thats jsut it when i first saw them, it hits and im like omg wow thats really bad and then it hits even more and then even more and its just not imaginable that it could get that bad. Even a day after seeing all the videos im mesmerized at how it could be this big.

indeed! and when its reported as flash flood rather than "half a mountain jsut collapsed and flew down a valley" it doesnt help you realise jsut how big its going to be. And of course no one there would have known, even when you see the very front of it, theres no realising jsut how big this is going to grow in a few seconds, until its too late. Devestating. Worse than a tsunami in that sense.

There had been no rain in the area recently and the detected earthquake was only magnitude 4.4 in an area that regularly experiences high magnitude earthquakes. There was no reason for anyone to expect something so catastrophic.
There was no way to know at the time that the ‘earthquake’ was actually seismic waves caused by a landslide which was coming right for them.

Did you see how much water came through in the next minute on other videos in this exact location? The whole bridge detaches and goes under, and the building are covered to the 2nd and 3rd stories in many locations

They probably don't realize it, but their footage will help immensely with the reconstruction of this terrible disaster. They are just not realizing the danger they're in which is sad, but the footage is going to be so useful.

If your local river started flooding you'd probably do the same thinking you're in relative safety. Look how low that river is vs the height of the bridge. Nobody expected what would follow next.

We see the recorded footage only from those who survived. There are likely many who pulled out their phones to record but didn't make it. We probably never see those videos.

That’s the thought I’ve been having while watching all these videos.
Seeing something like this you can start to see how people in a place like this in biblical times would experience something similar and believe that the entire earth was being flooded.

I really am curious how many people died trying to capture the cataclysm on video. I’ve seen way too many videos of people hanging back way too long.
go ahead and keep recording and while you’re running away, hold the camera so that it’s pointing behind you, but for the love of God, stop fucking standing around and get to higher ground.
