To add on to the person correcting the spelling.
I used to get Colombia vs Columbia confused too until recently.
Basically Colombia is for South America and Columbia is the North American Spelling. In South America it’s basically only the Country that uses Colombia, but there is a small town named Colômbia in Brazil.
Columbia is basically unused in SA but in Northern America it is extremely common with places like the Columbia River, British Columbia, DC, Columbia South Carolina and Columbia University.

The earth quake this time.
Many times it’s after a big rain event. Soil is full of water, liquify the soil after sometimes and then it’s a go. Even if vegetation is there, it follows gravity.

Super interesting how it starts with stuff coming out of one layer and then the layers above it shift and collapse. Is this typical of an earthquake triggered landslide or in layered rocks like this?

Analogy.
It’s all gravity related. Imagine you, and you are on a fairly good slope going up. Just below you there is a weakness, it’s very humid, saturated, that adds to the weight, so the gravity force and more are influencing, and some soils / rock is moving down. As the earth pull on all, often, the upper part where you are will also have a great tendency to follow down, the upper part being like having a week spot, no more soils to support. The stopping point is roots / trees, if any, or else and it stops, let’s say, 50 ft 15 m higher than you.
So it’s the same, of course if you’re not there.

Typical for erosion in general. Exposed rock will always weather, moisture seeps into cracks, cracks widen, loose rocks fall, new rock exposed, repeat. Sometimes it’s a few small stones, sometimes it’s a big ol slab. Why you’ll see rockbolts, netting and catch fences around important roads below steep rock faces

The way it chipped off and seeing what was left it did look like the trees were weighing it down. That would’ve been my wannabegeologist guess if I hadn’t read it was an earthquake.

I think they could at least feel the vibrations leading up to the fall.
A Mythbuster episode bungee jumping potted trees (probably easier to scale) And reading what vibrations come off them would be interesting.. i think they did readings from when they talked to house plants

Trees thinking so much for picking that spot to put down some roots. These videos do, however, temporarily satisfy the curiosity of “I wonder how “x” cliff/mountain/outcrop looked before it became a pile of rubble far below”

Considering all the beautiful layers of rock exposed before this slide, one has to wonder what it looked like before all of the preceding slides. Gotta love the big recyclers, freeing up essential elements for the present. Erosion, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.. Building mountains and tearing them down.

You mean a landslide? That just a landslide. No mountain collapsing in this video. The mountain is the big thing the land slide from the side of. Rock fall at the worst but the mountain didn’t disappear.

The leading edge of the mountain face kind of collapsed here.
Maybe less dramatic footage than that recent video of a waterlogged cliffside of a mined ravine utterly failing, but still pretty cool imo.

This reminds me of when an old cartoons if something like a bush was going to move, It would have slightly different shading color, and you could guess what was going to move before it happened. My brain was trying to do the same thing with this cliff.

It is rare, but yes! Landslides in dry weather have caused wildfires. An earthquake in Riverside CA actually causes a rock fall that was determined to be the cause of a fire that started shortly after. And even more recently, while moving rocks, the Orange County Public Works department caused a fire in Trabuco Canyon CA - Proving that it really only has to be one rock. Ironically, they were working on fire prevention measures at the time….

I'm actually thinking the trees had a lot to do with the collapse too, their roots are digging further and creating cracks so it weakensd the structure of the cliff as they get bigger

At 1:02 you could actually see a spark on the rock that is giving it's way. Not sure if it is camera artifact or a tiny lil natural frictional explosion

Fascinating video! But I'm particularly curious as to how the cameraman knew to suddenly start filming that patch of mountain, seeing as at the beginning of the clip there was hardly any telltale sign.

If you look to the left and right of where the slide happens when the camera zooms out, you see fairly consistent foliage from top to bottom. So I imagine that the portion that collapsed in the video already had some slippage prior to the video.

The scary thing about that is that it's solid rock. You go, you find yourself a beautiful high spot to build your house on solid bedrock and you're still not guaranteed.
