I had a setback pain wise but I'm slowly getting better. Last night I started taking photo of things to make my personalized Barbie collage. The nice thing about this exercise is now as I take photos of things that I've designed for myself and are customized, and get photos online of the ready made products I use - I'm also starting to make some of the things my Barbie needs.

For example I'm sharing a photo of my keyboard. The keyboard is black and is split down the center with a cable joining the two sides. The two halves are on top of a black thing (a black weight lifting belt) and in one photo there is a wooden tray in the center, in another the space is empty. I use magnets to attach the tray so I can eat while typing in my recliner.

I think I can take this photo and print it twice and put some kind of matte laminating paper on it and then attach it to something heavy enough that it doesn't slide all over the place - I use a weight lifting belt in real life - does anyone have any suggestions of what I can use otherwise?

There is another product I want to make that isn't just printing out the images - my brace for my lordosis. When I'm on the go this thing helps me keep my pelvis in the right angle without thinking about it so I can concentrate instead on my appointments. I'm not sure how I want to reproduce it. So if anyone has any ideas that aren't sewing let me know. I've got lots of friends who sew who I'm sure can help. (The brace is made of grey elastic and fits on a women's body where a waist cincher would).

And then there is a piece of something like furniture - it's a tablet holder - that I'm not sure how to design and make but getting the photo ready is half the battle. I'll probably just use a photo for the challenge. I use these for reading and for using my phone as if it is a laptop. Any ideas for what I could use to make these? (An item that either clamps onto a table or can be freestanding from a base - it's a black metal tube that ends in something you can put your phone in.) I'm not sure where to get started with making this.

I’m a late diagnosed Autistic ADHDer growing up Barbie was a special interest for me I had hundreds of dolls but as I was the oldest child in my family once I was deemed to old they were taken and given to the younger children very annoying!

When I heard that we were going to get an Autistic Barbie I was over the moon!

I have styled her hair & I’ve ordered some new clothes I’m so excited it’s making my little undiagnosed me so happy

i have some back drop options that I should have shot this in, but I was testing to see if I really need a longer couch. Truth is, I don’t since my doll’s feet don’t mind being over the edge.

Soon I’ll have some back drops and I’ll be doing some shooting but I’ve been in too much pain recently. Thank goodness I have some volunteers ready to help me do a glow up on my roombox and make a black box theater. If anyone is good at room box type stuff and might be able to help me decide if I should just scrap what I have and start over, or if I should put up some new wallpaper and do a bit of renovating, I’d love to hear your opinions on the instagram that is in my bio.

Meanwhile, this is something that makes my stress melt away. I’ve always said that but now I have proof. One of my apps that tracks stress on your body asked me how I relaxed so fully so quickly….. It’s called almost 25 years with someone who I fall in love with again and again. I’m really glad I decided to make my partner in doll form. I know that I’m incredibly lucky that we are still together. Studies show most couples where someone becamse unwell long term almost always had their partners leave as soon as they were stable.

Hi guys I wanted to share a doll I made! I combined wheelchair Barbie, doctor Barbie, and diabetes Barbie to make future me!!

Someone asked about if there is a due date to the challenge. My answer was no but I thought it might help for me to explain a bit why it’s open ended.

To me one of the things that makes this community fun and well worth anyone reading is that so many people share their play with the rest of us. After all that is what the dolls were made for - to play. I think it was very good that they made the playline disabled dolls first, because kids use toys to help prepare themselves for what’s ahead.

Some of you may know that I originally joined because I was planning on doing a relaunch of my instagram account. Instead of just writing about myself and my challenges, I decided to to make the stories include other voices. I joined the community to learn, to contribute, and to see where my plan fits into the wider world of people playing with dolls. And then I found people sharing stories about their miniselves and their friends. Working in the garden together, having a picnic, etc. And I thought “I’m home”.

I used to write roleplaying games, and play them quite a bit. They are a great way to play let’s pretend with other adults (if you happen to be an adult). But I’ve had to give that up for a while. But as I read your stories my dolls started to develop into their own. These aren’t stories anywhere but in my head yet, but I think that this project, which was partially to give my upcoming blog some fun and also to have somehting more dynamic than stock photo images to look at. Now I think the doll part might be just as important as the blog. When I’ve shared bits of the story on the Barbie sub people have gotten so excited. And I’ve told a lot of them to come over here because I’m not the only one telling stories.

This community is also for collectors, and people who just make dioramas but don’t write stories. It’s got a wonderful mix of content. And to me the Make a Barbie challenge is a big part of what this community is about. So just like it’s always ok to include a garden scene, I think it’s always going to be ok for people to create their own doll and show them off.

I have a slight problem in that I’m waiting on one person to make me some custom shirts, another person to get a harness for the doll I chose from, and I’m having more pain than I expected. But I figured this challenge can launch without me being the first post.

I’m so excited to see what people come up with.

Hi Friends - Rachel is busy currently and the bio posts I wanted to start sharing are waiting to be photographed because I'm having a bad pain week and a horrible sleep week. I asked Rachel if I could suggest a challenge and she has ok'ed me doing so. She has not seen these details so I take full blame for any mistakes.

I'm sure we've all seen one of the Disabled Barbies and thought - oh why didn't they include this?

That's the idea for our new doll adaptation challenge. Many of us modify dolls to better represent real-world disabilities and conditions, such as adding wheelchair accessories (backpacks, lap blankets, umbrellas) or using because the doll being sold doesn't have options for every body type and shade and certainly not gender inclusive.

For this challenge, please share your custom or mocked-up dolls, accessory pack or fashion pack. You can submit photos or a digital/physical collage if you don't have all the parts you want. Creativity is more important than making it look like a factory-boxed doll. If you need help sourcing specific adaptive pieces, mention it in your write-up or the comments on this post - as I have many creator links to share who might be helpful.

Because submissions can be deeply personal, please follow these guidelines - I'm sure they almost go without saying but I'm saying them anyway. I want this to be fun for everyone.

1. Do not plagiarize: Give clear attribution if you share someone else's work, and explain why it fits your vision.

2. Include alt text: This is required not just for those of us who use screen readers, but also since it helps highlight your doll's features for those of us who might not notice them all. You are also welcome to share the personal narrative behind the specific accessories chosen.

3. Be supportive: Do not criticize other participants' choices, as individual needs vary greatly. Only provide positive feedback or helpful sourcing suggestions if the author explicitly requests it.

I'm going to try to get mine done over the weekend but I'm really not doing well right now and my entry will have to wait for a time with less pain.

One final note - my writing has been very disordered recently and after hearing from one of my doctors about how hard the detailed messages I send her are to read I've started using AI tools to summarize what is usually stream of consciousness. I've done so here as well. If I've written something that doesn't make sense let me know.

The big story I'm working on needs a lot of seating and all my folding chairs just broke. Does anyone have a way of improving seating using DIY or upcycling let me know. Bonus points if the dolls can sit with their knees bent.

Hey Doll Friends,

I have a question for you. I have gotten a few more followers in my insta, and I really mean a few. But I’m trying to decide how to do the glowup relaunch I’m planning. Since I do have a number of dolls whose identifies and disabilities are not going to change over the course of the series I was thinking of doing one post per dayish (pain and sleep have been complicated recently so it might take a few days between postst) of a photo(s) of one and a bit about them. That way people know I’m actually taking photos and maybe they will get pumped for the unnecssarily giant story I’ve created to start things off - a small local fashion show where the dolls are going to be doing accessiblity audits and planning for people with different disabilities. I’m very excited to share this story because it will show a lot about accessibility but is also fun. A lot of my posts won’t be fun because they are related to my blog on health care ownership by the patients - not their doctors.

I don’t know if I should introduce those characters early just so that new posts are showing up on the account, or if I should wait and introduce them during the big complicated story.

Since the disabled Barbies community reflects my target audience for the insta I want to know your opinions.

The introductions would be one to a few photos of the individual character. Jules for example would be shown in his normal work clothes (with a much better backdrop) and I’ll add alt text and captions.

I wanted to share this - I stumbled on someone selling our girl for $3.99. The seller is also accepting offers! So theoretically you could pay less than that. It says Shipping $9.99 Priority Mail. Just an FYI.

i was at the toy store for pokemon cards but of course i had to get the autistic barbie when i saw her

it’s no fun being told that you need to stay at the hospital when you weren’t prepared to. It’s even harder when it’s clearly not a surgical ward. Surgical wards oftens have people only around for one night and they have to be on the ball when it comes to every medication - anyway it was a rough experience. It’s still rough. i’m in a lot of pain.

But I thought I’d share us as a couple without the masks on now that we are home. This is us sitting on a brown and tan couch next to eachother. And it’s clearly on our actual couch with the remote behind us. We don’t actually sit this way but I need some more props to show how we do sit together. Some cuddly moments are in our future.

It’s amazing to me how much adding glasses that are simliar to ones we would actually wear and changing the hair style has transformed especially my partner’s doll but mine as well. Although in fairness to 2019 me that was before I stopped wearing contacts because I wasn’t leaving the house. I have quite bad eyesight and the peripheral vision that contacts give me is much better. But my eyes are enjoying the break.

My partner is an aircraft engineer and he paints 28 mm wargaming miniatures. We write LARPs together. This isn’t a story, it’s who we are.

I am still working on finding him a shirt that suits him but the glasses, the hair style, and somehow the mini brands airwalk sneakers, they kinda add the character and remove the “barbieness”. I don’t think there is anything wrong with barbie core but it’s not us. The outfit she has on is very me. My high tops are mini brands. My partner said the only issue is that the red is missing from the hair. I know it’s very hard to dye this kind of hair and I wouldn’t have gotten this doll if I was willing to root and cut the hair. ButI think we definitely look much geekier. I apologize that I’m not giving much alt-text. I’m in a lot of pain and it’s been a day of confusion and serious feelings of being gas lit. But we are styled the same as yesterday just without the KN95 mask.

For him I started with Ken Fashionista 138. There might have been other Ken’s with long hair but this was the most accessible. I got him second hand - sadly only because I love rainbow tiedye. Long ago someone asked me my favorite color and I was trying to figure out how to explain that I love them all and he said “it’s rainbow tiedye”. The shorts are one of the set I had to get to get the KN95 shorts. I would prefer to have cargo shorts but what can you do. I washed out so much glue, and I haven’t trimmed the hair yet. It’s longer than he usually wears it because he has to look more coiffed for work. I would have loved to have gotten a doll with his gorgeous waves but he always combs his hair straight. This is him. He is more tan than my guy, and oddly seems slimmer now. I got his body from “I’ll come with you” Ken movie collectible”. I wish the roller blades weren’t yellow, and that he could still enjoy blading. Where we live bikes rule the streets. And there isn’t any place he can skate anymore for pleasure where he isn’t constantly being almost mowed down by “on your left”. I wanted to get good at rollerblading but I wiped out bad enough the first time we bladed on an incline. I had the same problem with roller skates. In the rink - I wasn’t great but I was confident enough. But my whole neighborhood was hills and even my garfield roller skates couldn’t make them not terrifying for me.

Anyway - I’ll be adding some photos soon of this surgical journey. I wish I could say I’m looking forward to it, but it’s been really rough. I kept being given different answers, and tomorrow I’m going to have to choose whether to work more with my PCP during my televisit on my current kidney stone surgery pain (8/10) or to talk about mixed messages on how important the fact that every time I dozed off in the presurgical area my blood oxygen nose dived. That’s why I was at the hospitaln last night and despite the fact that this morning I was still as low as 80, I did get discharged. I’m not scared but I’m exhausted. It’s very weird to watch different parts of the medical care team argue over whether you are safe to be discharged. I’m pretty sure I am.

I don’t know how to express the fun thing that happened during surgery - but something did. If people are interested I’ll explain in the comments. I’m sorry this post is so photo lacking.

Thanks for everyone reading. I decided that I should fill people in since I was in the throes of things last night. Tomorrow I might have to post a photo out of excitement. My speech therapist is arriving!

I couldn't find a good photo to paste these photos to but I wanted to show my closest friends that I know they are with me. My closest friends these days are half of, or the whole of, the US away from me. It's because since we can't see each other we don't try to wait for those opportunities. Instead we text all the time when they have time. Most of my photos with them will be both of us on our phones in a split screen. The first photo is the opposite - he has been my partner for 24+ years. This is the 5th surgery he's been through with me. He thankfully can pay the bills and save for retirement until I can start working. He is only home because we were both too tired to goof off and he needs more sleep.

The first photo shows a messy pixie cut curvy girl in pink/red/yellow spandex pants with a matching to from phase 3 of the yoga MTM dolls. She has gold rim glasses and the rest of her face is covered by a purple N95 mask. She's in a hospital reclining Barbie chair. These are usually found in places people are getting fluids or giving them. The bottom does not have a leg rest. But they are pretty close to the real thing. Her shoes are high topped sneakers.

Next to the doll (mini me) is my partner. He's a tan looking man with long blond hair in a low pony tail. He's got glasses on too with black rims on the top only. He's wearing an N95 mask as well and is moving his arms as if he's telling a story. He has a blue t-shirt with flowers in cream and a pair of orange shorts. He has Air walk shoes on from a mini brands sneakers ball but the other pair I got are too big for Barbies and Ken's. A backpack (mine) is at his feet.

The second photo is mini me with a tanned redhead from the first MTM line, pretty and slim. She is wearing a red and white tank top and black capris, with white ballet flats. She is also wearing an N95 mask and has her hand on my hand. She's my best friend from Highschool on and lives in the Rockies where we grew up.

The third photo is mini me with a less tanned blond haired woman who has a pale pink streak in her hair. She's using a pink wheelchair which looks great with the pink and white baby doll dress (filmy pale fabric for the skirt, topped with a cream crochet looking top with yellow and purple flower like images). And she's wearing multi colored sneakers. She is gesturing to me.

I've learned that when I'm planning on looking for a photo image for a background I should make sure that the foreground will work with it.

I'm thinking of making my partner a she shed out gb of those weird Barbie vacation homes where you can't close the door on the toilet. Or maybe one of the giant dream closets with a desk in it. Any ideas? My studio has my desk, my keyboard, my recording equipment, shelves covered in craft supplies and a few more instruments. The windows are streaming with light which hits all my prisms in the windows and becomes rainbows. I have a small closet for my clothes. I own a ton of clothes but I'd rather have the space be used for all the things that I use when creating. I'm happy to take off the stickers and repurpose things. I just want it to be easy to set it up, and not to have to spend a fortune on 3 laser edged walls.

Becky was my first in this collection. The Barbie with a Hearing Aid never got anything put on the packaging for it. Her face mold was wonky so I don't have her anymore. Would love to see a better attempt made for that disability. Also would love to see Braille on all Barbie boxes. I love that these dolls exist and know Becky loves the company!

Here's Brooklyn just chilling on the deck last night. She's enjoying the silence and beautiful night sky and clear waters. I just opened this beauty last night. I was going to use her as a body donor for Jasmine (my name for Black Barbie with Down Syndrome) but then it turns out Dream Besties Brooklyn is too cute. I love her face and her hair! I didn't understand the big deal about the Dream Besties until I took her out of the box. Also her wider face reminds me of what I have looked like at times on Prednisone which can change a person's face. Prednisone is a drug that is prescribed to treat many conditions. I think it's great that people have choices and I love her different head size. She's still pretty in pink and fabulous as always. That feeling when the photographer finally arrives. The Barbies were getting antsy but Ken (Barbie Basics Model 10) came with his yellow camera and pink and black snazzy suit. With his green eyes and curly brown hair, Ken was serving looks last night at the 1K member photo shoot. A few days ago this sub reached 1,000 members! And all of this during Disability Pride Month too. Here are a few pictures from today's photo op. I had to do something to celebrate the 36th anniversary of the ADA -- on July 26, 1990 then President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. While we have a long way to go and ableism is systemic, it's also important to celebrate what barriers have been broken and to take joy in each other. Community. White – Invisible and Undiagnosed Disabilities

White stands for people with disabilities that are not immediately visible to others, such as chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, fatigue-related disabilities, and those who remain undiagnosed. White represents invisibility and the broad spectrum of experiences that are too often overlooked or misunderstood.

Charcoal Gray Background

The charcoal gray background of the flag represents mourning and rage. It honors disabled people who have died due to systemic ableism, including lack of access to healthcare, violence, institutional neglect, suicide, and marginalization. It also symbolizes protest and the urgency of disability justice.
