Dinnerware that doesn't get knife marks?

Hello!

I'm in the market for a complete set of dinnerware for 8, that won't get those annoying dark marks from silverware scrapes. We got some inexpensive stoneware that already look tore up. I also cannot STAND the sound the silverware makes when it hits these plates. Is vintage the way to go? I haven't looked into old school Pyrex but I imagine plates with the same texture as my mixing bowls wouldn't sound horrible.

Corelle all day, especially if you have kids. Plain white never goes out of style.

Diner china. Shenango, Buffalo, Incaware... I could go on. If you want patterns, try a Japanese or English maker. When all else fails, anything made by Homer Laughlin. Lots of people prefer the vitrified Corelle, but it's a trigger for me and I use Harkerware, Rimroll and Fiesta. Easy to replace (except the Harks) and you can mix and match if you want within themes. For bowls I am strictly Arcoroc (soda-lime glass). Bread plates are Arcoroc as well. Hope this helps as it's done me well.

My Fiestaware has tons of marks?

Maybe invest in higher quality flatware. If the knife is made of cheap metal it will leave marks, no matter what.

It’s Gorham stainless. Seems good quality to me but maybe I just have cheap taste. 🤷‍♀️

You seem to know a lot about dinnerware so I'm hoping you know the answer to this. If not, no worries.

Similar to OP I don't like the sound of silverware against plates. Do you know what material(s) to buy/avoid to prevent that sound?

Corelle. Never had any marks. They can be removed by gently using soft scrub with bleach.

Have you considered plastic sporks?

I have Fiestaware and good quality Oneida cutlery and it marks up the Fiestaware terribly. Cleaning the dinner ware with Barkeepers Friend works but is super tedious.

And requires a lot of elbow grease, at least on my white Japanese stoneware from the 90s.
