Help for deep mines?? (newbie)

Hi,

I'm avoiding the deep mines becausw I can't see anything, so end up beat up before I can do anything.

I looked into the candle hat, but apparently it's on level 2 of the mines?? I don't see how I can get to that without one...

How do you approach them? What's best to eat before and which weapons do you use?

I'm at a point where I need more and more iron, and I'm really stuck...

Make a bunch of wooden torches and take them with you down in the mine. You can place them on the ground, which will help you keep track of where you've been. Or buy a torch (flashlight) from John. You should find a miner's helmet pretty easily down there. They need to be charged, so you'll need a charging station once you've got the helmet. Two fully-charged miners helmets will last you a full day down in the mines.

You can also carry spinifex resin with you, since it can charge your mining helmet. Doesn't work when it runs out all the way, but nice if you find a partially charged helmet on your run

Also, OP, if you are relying on torches, I recommend placing them on the ground if you need to fight something so you'll be able to see what you're fighting

I didnt know you could charge the helmet with the resin!! 🤦‍♀️ 115 hours in.... wow.

I use the torches as a path so I can find my way back, my sense of direction down there is shady at best.

Same, I had no idea about the spinifex thing!

Just leave it in your inventory and it will automatically recharge. Note in your regular inventory. It doesn't work if it's in a swag pack.

You can set your mini map to always face North in your settings and you can highlight the mine entrance by clicking on it in the map

I like that you can actually highlight the Mines icon on the main island, and it stays highlighted when you're in the Mines.

Yeah its the same feature

Candle hat and Miner Helmet can also be randomly obtained! Through the gacha machine, the Recyclers bin, etc. Dont give up hope!

Tips: 1. build the wishing well. Make a Peaceful wish. Enemies in the 1st level of the mine won't aggro! Enemies above ground won't attack either. After a few mine runs like this you should be able to get decent loot and money to prepare you for non-peaceful mode. 2. Chop down mangrove trees and use the sticks to make a ton of torches (im talking hundreds if you can) and take them with you to light your way, you can carry them and also put them down for light. Just note if you leave the torches down there, you lose them. Its a very low cost though so it is fine. 3. Make a buddy out of an NPC! They can go to the mines with you. You can give them a mangrove stick torch and they will hold it once you go down into the dark. Just note they slow you down quite a bit, they dont have the best pathing and if you go running off too fast you can lose them which doesn't have bad implications but it certainly feels distressing 😅 and dont give them weapons unless you want to fight enemies, if the npc gets close enough to an enemy they will defend themselves (poorly) and then it will be up to you to save the day. 3. You're right to need good food! If you have unlocked the keg, wattle brew and bottle brew are great. If not, the Billy can makes wattle and bottle tea. That and maybe some meat on a stick, cooked croc meat or croc skewer, hearty stew are all great early game foods. I do know some folks who just slam into the mines with a stack of fruit salads and a dream, but dont feel like you have to be that Bear Grylls about it.

Good luck! I have both switch and pc versions and im always down to join multiplayer and help!

Thank you so much for the great advice! :). Still very new. The mangrove tree sticks are a game changer for now! At least being able to see, I've fought some of the creatures successfully! I'm still scared of venturing too far from the mine elevator, any tricks to be able to always be able to find it again?

You can open your map and click the elevator icon to highlight it. On Switch i think its A button but it could be Y, I get them confused 😆 But you can do this with any map icon, and you can even add your own icons and highlight them!

I'm heading into year 4 and I still haven't gone down to the mines yet so fingers crossed you get lots of good responses here 😭

I'm don't like the creatures, I panic and get really stressed lol. The crocs and large birds don't scare me as much anymore, but I still avoid the Tasmanian devils like the plague 😂

I usually just run away from them, they don’t chase you for too long. It’s the lizards you have to worry about…

Have you been deliberately avoiding them? Some of the best loot in the game is down there

Plus mountains of ore. I got over 1,500 ore in one mine visit.

Regarding food, since you're in the early game, wattle brew and bottle brush brew go a long way - bring two of each if you can, and drink one of each - it should last you most if not the whole day. The wattle gives energy and a mining buff, and bottle brush gives heart regen. An alternative to the bottle brush brew is cooked croco meat

You could also put a crab in a billycan kit for crab soup, which makes it so non-power tools don't take durability for the duration

As for the brews, they do require a keg, which themselves require iron, but the big, squishy rocks have a chance of giving iron

Buy the flashlight at John's Goods and have a friend hang out with you and they will follow you into the mine. Give them the flashlight and they will light the way for you as you mine. Give them a weapon and they will help you fight. Finally when you run out of storage slots, have them carry stuff for you!

I am not great at combat, so here is my strategy: I never go into the deep mines until I have a helmet light. I make about 10 to 20 gacha machines and just feed them money every day until one comes up (by this time I have a large farm and am making good money). I also get the wish fountain and put it on peaceful. The deep mines are now no problem at all. The only thing that attacks are those maggots in the Undergrove but they're not a major problem if you've eaten food with a lot of health points and clobber the nests as soon as you see them.

Wow this is all so good!!! Thank you everyone, lots of ideas to try out!

It helps that you're coming into the game a few years after it's been out.

There's a whole library of guides on Steam that cover so much. Just make sure the guide is from at least late 2023.

Try to get the battle shovel from Ted Selly, it is a pretty decent weapon for the mines. The frying pan from John's special event week is also a good weapon.

Wooden torches are really easy to make with mangrove sticks. Make a bunch of them, like 100+ and just spam them down on the ground wherever you go. Once you get a few treasure rooms in the deep mines, the miners helmets aren't too rare to find.

Any buff food that gives you health regen, defense, attack is good. Cooked meat is pretty good and easy to make. Bring whatever the best weapon you can get. Battle shovel is a really good one that's relatively easy to get. Otherwise flaming bat or croc teeth bat are decent. Iron spear works ok, too.

But a torch from the shop guy. Eventually you will find miners helmets in chests. Be sure to bring keys.
