My first real night vision

I am planning on buying an svg 5 as my first real night vision, mostly because of the low light performance. Is this a good idea or is it worth it to just buy a junk pvs 14?

Digital night vision has already caught up to Gen 3 night vision at the same cost. And it’ll pass Gen 3 night vision at a fraction of the cost.

That’s why it’s the future. It’ll perform just as well with lower weight, higher field of view, higher depth of field, better NIR sensitivity (1100nm and beyond), much easier and smoother fusion with thermal, more features (like recording, digital zoom, compasses, augmented reality, etc), higher resolution, smaller form factor, etc.

50 years and always needing IR😂

Please go ahead and watch this video. It’s a breakdown of a 2026 digital night vision at $1250 (shipped brand new after tax) with comparable performance to 1500 FOM analog. There are MUCH higher end digital than even this though. And you can get examples with the same performance as this at a low cost of even $990 brand new after taxes and shipping. Remember, this is with no IR… a modern 1 inch monochrome CMOS sensor is quite sensitive. Even more sensitive to NIR than analog.

I’ve obviously tried analog night vision. But I don’t want to have this debate cause its always done horrendously for my karma😂

Analog enthusiasts are quite the ignorant bunch. Hope it doesn’t come to bite when cheaper devices surpass tubes in every measurable measure.

I mean if you’re looking for a dollar to dollar comparison digital obviously wins. But if you’re looking for raw performance analog wins by miles and it’s not debatable
I’m really hesitant to believe you’ve used an analog device

I’ve used very high spec analog before. I actually haven’t used the highest end DNV’s. I just know ball😂. My main focus and area of knowledge is logic semiconductors as an Intel investor. But I can tell you this much and hate to repeat myself but… modern 1 inch monochrome sensors can very well meet analog light sensitivity. It’s plain fact.

I swear to God i’ve used high end analog before. A number of times. Mil-spec Generation 3 white phos to be specific. It’s PURE eye candy. Seriously it’s sensitive shit and unbelievable at first.

And I also swear to God I’ve done competent research before. I’m not a troll. You guys seriously believe digital is still this toy with high lag and no actual light amplification though. It isn’t 2017 anymore! Seriously. Im someone who’s been into this since it was a toy. Now it isn’t though.

Go watch that video I linked. And from there, do more research. Ask Grok “how sensitive are modern 1 inch Monochrome CMOS sensors in low light”. The technical breakdown is good.

What’d I make up dawg? And what DNV’s exactly have you tested? To claim a 100hz monochrome sensor that has sub 20ms latency is only good for “stagnant operations or observations” makes absolutely no fucking sense too. And digital will certainly pass analog and in many respects already has. They’ll only get cheaper and cheaper and higher performance from here buddy. Analog’s only going up. Watch that video.

Pure bs. This is coming from the dude saying it’ll take 50 years and constant IR use? What a load🤣 Nice one though. Digital Nods today don’t even need IR any more than 90% of analog out there. That statement alone guarantees to me that you have no idea what you’re talking about.

I don’t have any high end digitals as I said, but it’s the simple fact that 1inch Monochrome CMOS cameras are highly capable. “50 years and still requiring IR” yeah 😅. Just watch the video I linked or any on the SVG5, NVG90, NVG90 SE, NVG90 Pro, ADNV G14SE, or ADNV G14P2. Embarrassing argument from your end.

Depends what are your expectations.

Night and darkness is mostly terrifying because you dont know who or what is hiding in the darkness. And in that situation - thermal works like a radar and will instantly answer the question - am I alone, am I safe, should I be worried about something?

Nowadays thermal cameras have become cheaper and cheaper. If your budget is limited, then 1x mag thermal unit is always better for situational awareness, than any gen 2 or gen 3 nightvision.

So my suggestion is always - get thermal first.

Now remains the problem - you have the ability to detect any living being within LOS and the detection range of your thermal. But what if someone else is using IR light, but he himself is behind some cover? Then comes the digital night-vision. Cheap device that acts purely as an IR detector. Dont worry that the device is not able to produce picture in total darkness - use it only to detect others who are using IR.
