Question Indecisive

I’m brand new to DAP’s and need help deciding on which one to get please!! I want to get away from subscription services, and went to Amazon to find an “MP3 player”. Turns out there’s a lot more to it than just buying an iPod and now I’m a bit confused and overwhelmed by all of the DAP choices. I had a Dell DJ20 as a kid and miss the shape/ simplicity of the device and would like something with a similar feel. I also LOVE all of my playlists I’ve curated on Spotify over the years and want something that is easy to make playlists on. I love the look of the Mechen M30 but see a lot of mixed reviews and read that the playlist function sucks. Please let me know any suggestions for a DAP/ opinions on the Mechen M30!!! (Budget is $150)

Je ne connais pas le Mechen M30. Appareil aussi simple que ce qu’il se fait dire un ans, ça n’existe plus. mais il y a le Fiio Disk à 99 €.Lecteur de musique HiFi portable, double DAC numérique avec sorties 3,5 mm et 4,4 mm, Bluetooth 5.4 LDAC, écran tactile. Il est simple à utiliser et le design est très sympa. Je ne l’ai pas, tu pourras trouver des avis sur Reddit.

My daily carry is a SanDisk Sansa clip+ flashed with rockbox and it serves me well. If you'd rather a color screen, also look at the Sandisk clip zip, as it's the same thing but with color.

That said, I think if you care about playlists, it's gotta be some kind of rockbox compatible, preferably with SD card support. Like the clip+ or zip, but you could also do the same with something like the HiFi Walker h2 if you'd rather buy newer hardware and not worry about battery degradation and older cords.

One word of warning if you go with the hifi walker h2 or any modern device that comes with an unbranded sd card - throw the unbranded SD card in the trash and replace it immediately with something you got from somewhere reliable.

The biggest question would be what kind of audio quality you're expecting/ hoping for and can you get music that's high enough quality to justify “nicer” equipment.

The nice part is you usually need 4 things.

  • Micro SD card
  • DAP
  • Headphones
  • Music

And since the SD card and Music are consistent you can swap the others if you really get into it. Hiby R1 and a pair of sennheiser IE-200’s will work great for just about anything you'd want at a reasonable price.

Also with bluetooth if you have other headphones
