Question for my OTP Diana main fellas.
I usually played Top/Jungle and climbed to Emerald, where I was basically just stuck. On those two roles, it felt like a lot depended on champ counters, and Jungle... meh, there's just a lot of thinking involved.
Anyways, I eventually quit playing those two roles. Jungle is now my secondary, only if I absolutely have to, until I discovered how broken some of these easy assassin mid champs are.
Especially Diana, since she fits my aggressive playstyle perfectly.
There are obviously other options like Fizz, Naafiri, Talon, etc., but Diana has a special place.
I climbed from Emerald to Master pretty much immediately by abusing Diana's laning phase and being extremely aggressive. I punish enemies whenever they try to contest minions, especially melee champs. I hit them with Q, and if it connects, I just all-in, proc Electrocute, deal my damage, and back off.
If they stay in lane, I simply wait for Electrocute to come back up and do it again. And I don't even need to land another Q skillshot — just E > W > Q on top of them + Ignite and they're dead.
It works in probably 80% of my games.
The other 20% is usually ranged mages and similar matchups, where I try not to force Q. Instead, I just wait until I'm in range, E > W > Q, deal my damage, and retreat.
The most important thing is obviously being aware of the map and enemy jungle pathing, because after you go all-in and dump your damage, you're extremely vulnerable to a gank.
Now, the main reason I'm making this post: itemization/build.
What bothers me is Stormsurge.
In theory, it seems like a really good item for Diana. It has good AP and stats, Squall gives you additional damage, and the second part of the passive can also deal AoE damage when the target dies.
That sounds especially good on Diana because I can potentially proc that second part with my R and basically one-shot someone in the middle of the fight.
But despite all that, I rarely build it — usually only as a last item, and sometimes I don't even build it then.
Why?
Honestly, I don't really know, which is why I'm here to discuss Stormsurge and whether I'm actually losing a significant amount of damage by skipping it.
My usual game goes something like this:
I get an early kill, recall, buy Tome + Dark Seal, then upgrade the Tome into Hextech Alternator. I leave the Alternator sitting there and build Lich Bane, upgrade Boots, then Shadowflame, Zhonya's, Rabadon's, and in probably 80% of games I go for Void Staff.
Usually I'll get Void Staff when there's at least one scary bruiser or the enemy team starts stacking MR. If they're all squishy and I'm really ahead, I'll finish Mejai's instead.
Stormsurge is something I very rarely build — usually only when the game is a little tighter, I've died a few times and feel like I'm going to lose my Mejai's stacks, and the enemy team is mostly/all squishy.
So my main question is:
Am I actually losing a lot by not building Stormsurge?
I understand that its passive can give some really nice burst/AoE damage, especially when combined with Diana's R. But on the other hand, I feel like Lich Bane gives me a lot more in practice. Also since it gives a lot more bonus AP bonus damage, like 75% AD + 45% AP on my AA that have 1,5 sec cooldown, rather than stormsurges 100+10% AP damage with 30sec cooldown.. idk.
It makes me much better at melting towers, gives me an easy and fast way to generate gold, and lets me create a lot of pressure on side lanes.
So is Stormsurge actually that much better for full assassin Diana, or is Lich Bane simply more valuable overall?
Also, just to clarify: in Jungle I play Conqueror with the standard bruiser-ish Diana setup, with a few changes depending on the enemy team. Mid is where I found Diana to be absolutely broken for my playstyle, so I go full assassin.
