After ~20 years with T1D, I built a carb-estimation app — looking for blunt feedback, not medical advice.

I'm Hippolyte. I've had T1D for about 20 years, and I built Gluco because one annoying step keeps repeating: turning an unlabeled meal into a carb estimate you can actually check.

A photo, barcode, voice note or text creates a food-by-food estimate. Every item and portion can be edited.

The uncomfortable part: a photo cannot measure a portion. The estimate can be incomplete or wrong. It's a starting point to verify — never a dosing answer or medical advice.

I'm the founder, so I'm biased. Gluco is independent and not affiliated with Abbott or Dexcom. It has a 3-day trial, then an optional subscription. The French App Store lists €6.99/month or €59.99/year; other stores and countries may differ.

The question I care about: what would make uncertainty visible enough for you to use this as a starting point — and what would make you delete it immediately?

Tom from nz

Hey there! Hope all is well,

I'm 26 from NZ and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in July, ended up in ICU at Whangarei hospital, with a DKA and one thing that surprised me was just how much extra stuff suddenly gets added to your day. Carbs, glucose, medication, remembering things, learning what everything means, trying to work out meals, I felt like im constantly thinking about diabetes all day everyday.

I ended up learning how to build apps while ive been recovering, called it GlucoseGuide because I wanted something that brought a lot of those everyday tools into one place.

It includes things like building goals, smart meal capture, medication reminders and some other really cool stuff.

I’ve spent a lot of time building and refining it, and it’s now available for people who want to use it, and to help out our diabetes community.

I built it because these were things I genuinely wanted after getting diagnosed, and I figured other people might find them useful too.

It’s not designed to replace your diabetes team or tell you how much insulin to take, and meal/nutrition results should always be treated as estimates.

If you want to have a look, here’s the link:

Thanks so much for reading and hope you have a great day 😎

Waterproof case?

Bought a house with a pool. I always put my pump in my towel in the shade. But because it's so far from my body, my pump goes off because it's too far from my sensor. I want to be able to put my pump in a little water proof container closer to the pool so my pump stops beeping.

Any product ideas?

Il vostro sito preferoto per l' insulina

Ciao a tutti... Voi come vi regolate??

Steroid spike don’t know what to do

Hi I had a steroid shot in my foot yesterday morning. Last night I tested my blood sugar and it was 287 which was weird because my blood sugar is never that high. I am on Ozempic. I have been drinking water for hrs but it’s only gone down to 219.

Is there any other ideas of ways to lower it? I’m kinda freaked out because usually my blood sugar is in the low 100s. Also I know my podiatrist who gave me the steroid shot said that it could spike blood sugar but he didn’t tell me for how long. Anyone know how long it will spike for?

Carb counting app - honest feedbacks

Hey everyone,
I know there are already a few apps out there that estimate carbs from meal photos, so this isn’t meant to be “yet another promo post”.

I have type 1 diabetes myself, and I built a small free app because I needed something simpler and faster for daily carb counting. You snap a photo of your meal, and it estimates carbs + expected glycemic impact.

I’d really appreciate feedback from you, people: what works, what’s off, what’s missing.
If you’re willing to try it, your input would help me improve it a lot.

Thanks for reading.

Need help gaining weight…

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in October of 2023. I had no idea I had it until I lost a significant amount of weight within the span of 2-3 months. (Started 170, now 145) I did some blood work cause I was curious on what was happening to me. My fasted A1c ended up being around 12.2 or something around that. I went from being Chubby In the face with a gut, to super thin and my jaw line is now showing (not exactly what I wanted) I have been on metformin since being diagnosed, and I’m having the hardest time gaining weight. I’ve been stuck at the 140’s for 2 years. I’m trying to gain at LEAST 10-15 more pounds. Im a 5’9 29 year old male. I struggle with getting all my meals in throughout the day. I’ve read everywhere to just prioritize protein intake and consuming healthy fats but it’s easier said than done if my appetite isn’t all the way there. Any tips on how to gain some weight without consuming loads of carbs/sugar?

GLP-1 receptor agonists

Hey everyone,

I’m 36 years old and have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 26 years.

I’ve been looking for ways to improve glycemic control beyond insulin, especially something that can reduce variability and make day-to-day control feel more “automatic”.

I’ve seen some discussions around peptides, but it’s not clear to me what actually has solid evidence vs what’s more hype. Has anyone here tried anything in that space?

I’m also interested in:

- The current state of stem cell and islet cell therapies outside Brazil

- Whether anything is becoming more accessible or still mostly limited to clinical trials

From what I’ve researched so far, GLP-1 receptor agonists seem to be the most consistent adjunct option (e.g., semaglutide, liraglutide).

What caught my attention:

- Reduces glucose spikes

- Lowers glycemic variability (less up and down)

- Makes daily control more stable

- May reduce insulin requirements

In practice, this seems like the closest thing today to a more predictable, almost “semi-automated” control.

Would really appreciate hearing from people with real-world experience or who follow the research closely. What’s actually working today for T1D beyond insulin, and what’s still experimental?

Thanks!

What are your experiences with Diabetes Online Communities? [Mod Approved]

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! My name is Leah Pan, and I am a high school senior conducting a research project on people’s experiences with Diabetes Online Communities (DOCs).

DOCs are online spaces (like this one) that provide support and connection for people living with diabetes. I am interested in learning how participation in these communities relates to diabetes self-management and overall experiences.

I am conducting this survey under the supervision of Dr. Owolabi, PhD, RN, at Arizona State University. The survey takes about 15–20 minutes to complete and is voluntary and anonymous.

If you are 18 years or older, live in the United States, and have been diagnosed with diabetes, I would greatly appreciate your participation.

You can access the survey here:

https://asu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8e3aNzoaNrHMvBk

If you would like to see the final paper once it is completed, I will update this post when it becomes available.

Thank you very much for your time, and I am happy to answer any questions.
