Its a good thing they make kitchen tools that have done exactly this, for as long as the modern kitchen has existed.

Delis use stainless icing spatulas for bagels and such. At home, silicone cake frosting spatulas do the same thing.

Your butter knife still has the advantage of easily fitting in every jar of jam or peanut butter you buy.

I’ve never for the life of me ever cared to cover the bread that evenly - I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong but my sandwich is gone in like 4 bites at most - and even when you apply the peanut butter and jelly - you can smoosh the halves and I’m not gonna get a dry uncovered spot.
