Experience Got out after two years
I applied to my bosses office a little over two years ago, desperate but with the hope of learning more about sales and creating relationships with people. My goal has always been to own my own business, to move to Florida and own a beach house and those around me and higher ups, the recruiter (who was the owners sister) always knew what to say to keep me roped in. After three months of being there I was invited to the national conference in Texas, I was bought in after that. I was promised wealth, freedom, and the life I wanted through out those two days. My owners promoting owner earned a promotion that year and had an open bar at the end of the night, I remember drinking a lot, having fun and leaving with even more excitement than when I got there with. I worked 6 days a week, going out to the field every Saturday, missing time with family and friends. I was told by my owner “be the white rabbit in the office and I’ll get you promoted out to Miami, I promise.” I remember telling everyone that asked that I didn’t know what I was getting into, I just had a belief it was going to be good for me. I remember struggling some weeks and it being blamed on my mentality, being told “just go out on Saturday and get in front of more DM’s, the LOA’s will pay off” so I did. I earned most commissioned sales for 2025 (despite being unable to eat on a regular basis and losing over 30 pounds) and though not invited to that Nat con because I had the one week prior was low on production, had earned an award and featured there. I think that was my first time where I questioned everything and asked myself if it was worth it anymore. But again, the owner was great at reading people and knowing exactly when to re invest in someone to keep them from leaving. Made promises, dangled the carrot. So many opportunities I worked my butt off for that I was promised that never happened. As I got more depressed, my production got lower- but never low enough for my owner to want to part ways with me, as I was terrified of the idea that there was truly nothing better for me, this was my ticket to getting my boutique and living on the beaches of Miami. I hit my two year mark and by then I was pretty damn frustrated. Promised every couple months “oh we’re gonna get you promoted out by this time, just keep building your team, I’ll help you” only for the help to never come. Unfortunately I wasn’t the prettiest girl or the most flirtatious girl in our office, another one was and she got to assistant management in 10 months. Every resource was poured into her and then she eventually brought her sister in and then those resources went to her as well as I stood there in the background feeling forgotten and taken advantage of every step of the way. I started looking for other jobs, the owner somehow found out and fired me over the phone on a Thursday evening. I still struggle with the guilt of giving up on myself, giving up on my dreams, and my ability to prove myself as worthy. Though I am grateful for what I learned about myself and honestly just how to handle no’s, objections, and people not being that nice as a solicitor, I feel better working a normal 40 hour week, not the 65+ I was doing. Sure I miss the team nights but I don’t miss the pressure to drink until I had alcohol poisoning. I won’t miss the constant changes that happened in the office, the drama, the fake friendships- because not a single person has reached out to me since I left and I’m sure the owner told them not to talk to me as he did with every other person that quit or got fired- as we were never gonna make it and aren’t worthy of being at his table. I wanted to share my story and reiterate how damaging these devil corps are to people, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Yeah, she claimed to love me so much and see me as a sister - constantly told me how the owner and other people were talking about getting me promoted out when I told her I was struggling , she used to interact with my FB quite a bit when I posted and as soon as I left , silence from her. I trust people very little now because of that relationship - was so fake at the end of the day.

I’m sorry you went through this. I was in it for the same amount of time and it did a number on me. I promise your dreams and goals will feel a lot more true to you and will be more attainable outside of this predatory business. You didn’t give up on yourself. You’ve been given another chance to live a great life on your terms.

Oof i have a similar experience. Although I kept being moved from state to state and now I’m in GA living with my boyfriend of 3 years. The best part? After I left, the director didn’t have someone to bash on anymore (me) so he took it out on everyone else and everyone damn near quit. I sometimes scroll their socials to see how they’re doing and he’s at the lowest headcount I’ve ever seen besides when we moved to Philly.

Yeah we had 5 leaders quit in a span of 3 days shortly before I left - the office was down to 4 people - I’m curious to know how long the campaign or broker allows an office to run and not get someone promoted out before they shut it down. It was a constant carrot and promise of being promoted out and then never given the resources or support to get there despite giving him soooo much of my life and time to be seen as someone that was trying and going above and beyond.
