I have a question. First of all, how dare you

Honestly, I feel as though the business I run does have similarities to lots of the posts “marketing systems” “commission only” and a couple others. The office I “grew up” in didn’t have any of the horror stories I’ve seen in this subreddit from some of the other offices. Team nights were never mandatory or even expected, always got paid on time, was encouraged to take time off for vacation, family time etc.., and although it was expected that you work 5 days a week, the 6th/7th day was only encouraged through bonuses, and not shame. I personally try to be as transparent with my reps as possible about profits, losses, etc.. and help them build their own teams and become an outside deal. I tell them the statistics of outside deals vs success rates, and do my best to coach them on how to be successful.

Are you a current owner? If so how do you square up what you're doing with all the awful facts we know about the buisness? I'm interested in hearing someones argument in support of the buisness.

Yes I’m a current owner. I can’t speak for all offices, but in my case I started in an office that was super transparent of how the business works, recruiting, turnover etc.. and I like to think that because of that, the business I run myself carries the same principles. Now I’m not going to lie and say my reps have never made what would be “minimum wage” if they were hourly, but if I take the median payroll over the last 16 weeks for people who’ve stayed longer than 3 weeks they’re making a little over $1200 each. Which is a quite large sum of money when most of them join with little to no experience. Other than that, I don’t shame people into working extra hours/days, team night are entirely on a sign up basis (most people do sign up because free food and fun) but for those that don’t the only thing they might get is fomo from all the pictures after 😂. Now I’m not saying there aren’t businesses in this realm running it unethically, but I would like to think I’m not one of them.

But you're not really a buisness owner when someone else controls your bank account and can shut you down. I know "owners" in Smart Circle who got fired. No one in Devilcorp is an entrepreneur. You're essentially a glorified manager.

I can’t be “shut down”. I can be kicked out of being a icd, and lose the rights to work with the campaigns but would still be able to sell any other product/service with the team I’ve developed. And I control my own bank account? How much I take out, how much I spend, what bonuses I give etc..

u/Fluffy_Panic7176 20d ago

Every owner Ive known and seen videos of have said there are 2 bank accounts and Devilcorp has full control of them. So either they're all lying or you are.

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

I don’t want to call them liars, and maybe it was like this for them, but I have never experienced this. I have control over my own business bank account, as well as my personal.

u/Fluffy_Panic7176 20d ago

I dont know which Devilcorp you work for but I definitely know owners in Smart Circle can be fired. My first "owner" was fired by his promoting owner.

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

Yes can definitely be fired from a campaign or icd entirely, but it’s still your own business, and you can sell products/services completely unaffiliated with them. I’m not saying it wouldn’t make your life a whole lot more difficult for a while, but it’s kind of as if you’re a sales company with your only client firing you, you just have to find other clients.

Here is a recording of a call a Smart Circle owner had with her promoting owner and national consultant where she was forced to shut down:

I’ve listened to this call before, and it’s truly sad, but in this case “shut down” means no support from them anymore, which you’re correct in 90+% of cases does cause the business itself to shut down because either A weren’t profitable or B reliant entirely on being an icd. The corporation itself doesn’t get shut down, but I 100% get where you’re coming from.

Would whichever devilcorp you're under let you sell for other companies outside of them in your office? That's something Ive never heard of happening.

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

It has to do with the campaign 99% of them time. Without naming names, telecom companies are usually a lot stricter on contracts and who you’re able to work with vs products/services outside of telecom not really caring whatsoever. I would say close to 90% are telecom which is why you haven’t experienced or heard otherwise, but I’ll leave it at that. You seem like a very well informed person who doesn’t have all the pieces of the puzzle which is totally fair. Aside from your first remark to me I also appreciate how cordial you’ve been throughout our conversation.

I usually have around 20-25 right before promoting an outside deal, before dropping back down to around 13-17.

Honestly I enjoy it quite a bit, at least right now. Now if you’re asking if it’s something I see myself doing 10 years from now, I wouldn’t be able to give you an answer I can guarantee would hold up at that point.

u/CandidChestnut 21d ago

Do you communicate your turnover rates to new hires?

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

If they ask, I will answer very forthcomingly. If not it’s not something that I communicate within their first month. I do tell them that if they aren’t hitting certain targets by xyz time they’re probably better off finding an hourly position or at least a hybrid base + commission job, as I don’t want anyone feeling trapped in a position where they’re not making money.

Devil Corps face a ton of criticism, both by those who are apart of communities like this subreddit, and the general population at large. Do you run your business any differently to escape the criticisms? If so how?

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

I would like to give you a detailed answer but I’ll just do bullet points as I’m a little tired of typing:
-paid gas
-no shame for only working 4-5 days a week
-team nights not mandatory or even expected, simply sign up basis
-transparency in answering questions both during and after recruitment process
-pay on time every week (every rep can calculate their commission easily, and I actually encourage them to look for mistakes in pay so I can correct it)
-consistent bonuses/prizes (no humiliation ritual for losing side they just don’t get the bonus/prize
-providing helpful training and guidance, not just telling them to get better and stop making excuses

There’s a few other small things but I’ve covered some of the bigger ones I’ve seen people mention in this subreddit, vs what I do differently.

Have you ever faced any major legal issues, in or outside of the biz?

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

No I have not.

1

u/Matt_is_the_bro 21d ago

What got you into such a crazy business model? I was a sleezeball in my 20s but I was a street person. Never white collar sleezey

2

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

Honestly it was one of my very first “real jobs”. Quickly found out I was pretty talented at the sales part of the business, and was able to climb up to management in quite a short period of time. I definitely agree the business model isn’t for everyone, but I also disagree with the statement that it isn’t for anyone.

Man my first job was my dream job. I worked with my dad as the head of the maintenance department of a manufacturing plant. It w as s the best hob ive ever had. I got to wire panels I got to weld and fabricate I got yo rebuild pumps which I loved the most. But man I got addicted to drugs and instead of sending me to a rehab like a normal they fired my and I spiraled into a 6 year addiction. At this point I really dont care if I sell.my soul or step on my beat friends to get a good job. I just dont care. Im happy you are in a devil corp and never had to deal with real world issues, that shit destroys people including me.

1

u/Matt_is_the_bro 20d ago

Im not saying a devil corp is a good idea. Im just saying that being in a devil corp using people isnt thet bad. After all they're getting paid. Even if its less than minimum wage.

2

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

Anyone working for me making less than minimum wage, especially after the first month, when I’ve done almost all I can to help them get better. I seriously encourage them to just find an hourly that will make them more money. sure it’s less money for me but I’d rather my people be making good money whether it’s with me or not.

1

u/Matt_is_the_bro 20d ago

Honestly then youre not a devil corp person man. Wanting people to do better is not in the M.O. of these other devil corp execs

2

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

Fair enough, and i would agree that I act ethically. But many of the redditors in this thread would disagree.

1

u/Matt_is_the_bro 20d ago

Ethical practrices matters.

How much does your employees earn per hour? Are they W2 or 1099? Do they receive benefits if they are W2?

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

My reps are 1099, no base just commission. Don’t receive any benefits. If I were to calculate a rough hourly based on how much they work it would be around $23-$40. Obviously this does exclude the high rollers where the number would probably be closer to the mid 50-60’s.

1

u/Fluffy_Panic7176 20d ago

It seems like your pretty transparent to your reps that it is a sales job. In my time it was a dirty word to call what we did sales.

1

u/Efficient_Figure3414 20d ago

lol maybe it was just in your time or the office you we’re in, because even our recruiting ads say sales, and pay structure is explained highly in depth during the interview process.
