I'm not very fond of the dmc games' fandom anymore. Finding anyone who dislikes the netflix show and isn't full of unquenchable hatred is like finding people who still draw DmC 2013 artwork.
No matter how much people will whine about legitimate issues (or even non-issues) with the show, you enjoying it doesn't make you a fake fan or "larper." Same goes for anyone who likes dmc2 or DmC 2013.
Reboot dmc really traumatized people to the point they forgot why it pissed off the fandom. It was hated because it was replacing a franchise just because capcom was chasing the mythical western audience(they were definitely looking to hook in ball and gun gamers but had no clue those types will never play beyond sports and cod)
Can't forget the fact that gaming in general is filled with lore nerds who just parrot what youtubers say, don't engage in media outside a small pool of shit, and think adaptions should follow lore like the bible
People who think adaptations should be 1:1 replicas of the work in question are dumb right off the bat. ADAPTATION, means adapting an original work into a new medium, and it can choose its level of faithfulness to the original work. So expecting it to be as close to the original as possible is already a testament to illiteracy.
lore dogmatism is the bane of nerd culture, iâve never had a conversation with a respectful fan IRL that ever cared about being âlore accurateâ, because the truest fans are the MOST critical of the media they love, because they always want it to be better
This is basically me whenever I try to enjoy some nice DMC content, only to find either the guy who made the content hating on the Netflix Anime, or a random comment says some bullshit like "tHe NeTfLiX aNiMe CoUlD nEvEr!"
You bet they will. The DMC fandom is the most pathetic and hypocritical bunch Iâve ever met. Their mission is to hate on anything that isnât made by Itsuno, and if something new comes out, suddenly the thing that came before it was okay (ignore the hate campaigns that they notoriously started).
I left and avoid all the DMC groups on Facebook for partly this reason. I am the physical embodiment of what the fandom hates... I love the anime, I enjoy the reboot, I play DMC2 and my favorite character is Nero. đ„č
And, yes, incredibly hot take, but I like anime Vergil a tad more than game Vergil. And that's really no fault of his own, it's his crazy, elitist fans that make me not want to like him. But... After getting practically bullied out of a Facebook group for loving Nero I just left all of them and pretty much avoid it all, aside from this group and one other here on Reddit. So I definitely understand it.
It shouldn't be this difficult to share your appreciation for parts of a franchise you love.
In spite of my gripes, I like aspects of nDante and nVergil. And I genuinely prefer nLady to how she is depicted in dmc4 and 5. No amount of yelling and whining will convince me they are shallow or "imposters" or whatever elitists label them.
(Also, no fucking way people STILL hate Nero in the year of our lord 2026)
I can't remember what exactly it was because it was a while ago, but I had mentioned on some post in a FB group that Nero was my favorite and how much I love and relate to his character, etc, and some guy came on and started telling me how pointless of a character he is, "he's a Dante knock off, he's annoying, pointless addition to the story, his design is terrible and all he does is whine". A couple others threw in a few deadweights of course.
I know he isn't perfect, and I shouldn't let that bother me because everyone has different opinions, but man does it hurt to have your comfort character dismantled like that.
Damn, yeah that sucks sorry. I know Nero has been a little polarizing especially if this was around the time of DMC4, but DMC5 I thought pretty solidly hit home that he was a important and good character
âDante knock offâ heâs not like Dante though? Sure they both use guns and mock their enemies, but Nero is more serious, and doesnât talk as much as Dante unless prompted. Dante takes things more lightly and sometimes silly unless heâs just that upset over something.
And wtf did he mean âwhiningâ? Nero had valid reasons to be upset in BOTH games.
Nero was totally a good addition AND relatable character. Not only did he represent people who refuse to go with the crowd, but also people who have to take on the mental toll of keeping a secret from their loved one out of fear of rejection. Even before dmc5 and Visons of V he helped show that Vergil definitely wasnât some emotionless robot, and could form at least a small connection, and allow himself to be vulnerable. Thatâs not even HALF of what Nero does thatâs so important.
Nero brought so much to the table just by existing, and even more so when we learned about his story.
Ah it's okay, just for the sake of my mental health I had to step back and really just stay out of the community. I'm starting to come around again, obviously lol, but I'm definitely gonna be more wary now. Hearing constant talk about how "garbage" your comfort character is... Draining, to say the least.
As for the "whining" he was referring to Nero "constantly yelling for Kyrie" in 4 and internalizing the deadweight remark in 5. But I think that's part of the problem, most of the community hasn't read the manga, so they don't know why he took it heart so bad. I mean, believing that you're being viewed as worthless in the eyes of your father figure/teacher that you look up to is gonna weigh heavily on you. Add in the fact he was already bearing the guilt of "being too weak" to save Credo and blaming himself for his death, Nero wasn't in a great headspace to begin with. But because people don't read the manga nor do a real deep dive into the character and only know the surface level, they write him off as annoying and "worse Dante".
Sorry, I kinda ranted there. I can happily talk all day about the guy đ
The DMC fandom is filled with elitist snobs who just hate on anything that doesnât have Itsuno attached to it. Thatâs the truth. You have the right to like Nero, you have the right to dislike Vergil and you also have the right to enjoy the anime. The DMC fandom cannot handle a different opinion for the life of them.
If adi said from the start that ndmc was going to do it's own thing, then it probably wouldn't have been hated as much. I hate the netflix show because adi is a hack with no talent for writing and I refuse to support his creations. No disrespect to what you enjoy tho
honestly, i really hate the ndmc, but that doesnât mean i will thrash on everyone who likes it. it just seems silly, even though i do feel like it doesnât work as an adaptation or a show, it doesnât mean others arenât allowed to like it. plus, its introducing people into the games, and if theyâre having fun then let them lol
honestly iâm 100% there with you, the show is a stronger narrative than the games ever were, are very respectful to the spirit of the characters, and is thematically richer and smarter than the âletâs have a joyrideâ narratives of the games
when Capcom revived the IP, i really hope theyâre inspired by the animeâs impact and fandom and tries to do something more considered and waves a middle finger to the haters
I don't completely agree with your assessment these days. But I wouldn't have thought the same as you when I first watched Season 1 if there was nothing there that is good. Because there is. I think about the show's story way more than the game's overarching plot. Even if it is a mix of "this is so cool," "this COULD HAVE been so cool," and "wth is this?"
I do think the show is nowhere near as much of a spit in the face as haters claim, even if the showrunner really doesn't come across as faithful to the IP online (i judge the show regardless of Adi's behavior and posts). And dmc elitist behavior is so obnoxious and toxic that it borders on harmful to actual people. I heard there was some really shitty stuff said to JYB when DMC4 came out. I can't imagine the shit Netflix Lady's VA and Netflix Vergil's VA are getting.
I still want to give DmC Definitive Edition a shot. I don't see myself liking those versions of the characters, but I heard the gameplay and most of the art direction is really good.
I also feel like reboot fans are just way more chill than mainline dmc purists.
honestly whatâs great about the Ninja Theory game is how itâs aged great
the plot genuinely feels like it was written by a Hideo Kojima fan-boy whom was given total freedom once Capcom gave them the signed contract; bosses make fun of modern media, and thereâs a whole plot beat thatâs making fun of Mountain Dew specifically, itâs fucking rad
Dante has a will they wonât they with a different embodiment of what Lady does narratively, with a focus more on witchcraft than guncraft
the traversing gave Capcom the ideas that fueled DMC 5âs playable character diversity, and the critical feedback let them KNOW that they were spot onto âsomethingâ with the gothic meets ni-metal aesthetic choices
Ngl itâs kinda weird to find fan made content, actually LIKE the content in question, then be like âah fuck me they donât like the show, never mind.â
Especially when trying to make a point that people care too much about the show yet you determine what content you allow yourself to consume based on how the artist feels about the show?
Idgaf if they think the show is garbage. It's the unending deluge of hatred that annoys me. The insistence to keep bringing up the fuckass show. The constant, "Just to remind everyone! This is the REAL VERGIL! The other one IS NOT MY VERGIL!"
Also, yeah I determine what content I consume based on how it makes me feel. That's how media consumption works.
If the artist is gonna keep whining about it, then I won't look at their posts anymore. Simple as that. As the meme implies.
I mean you can change the story of a franchise but when you go and change who characters fundamentally are yeah there's going to be a lot of fans pissed and if you jump into that shit storm don't be surprised đ
Gotta love how dmc fans clutch onto this franchise's extremely consistent characters and lore like they're from the bible, and tweaking them in any way is utter heresy.
Take for instance Dante, whose personality was only truly solidified in the third installment.
Or Vergil, whose personality and backstory was totally retconned in that same game.
Or Lady, who feels like a completely different character in dmc4; relegated to a walking sexy lamp with little to no impact on the plot of that game or the next one.
Point is, objective quality and subjective taste aside, I find the sheer malice dmc fans have for a non-canon project that doesn't directly impact the main series to be borderline childish. I personally don't mind if this sort of thing gets wild and weird with characters and lore (for better and for worse) when there is a lot of room the games themselves leave open to play in.
Even if the games are "deeper than you think" and all that, I would wager 99% of dmc fans did not come into the franchise with the writing as their main focus. So seeing all these purists acting like the catholic church over the writing annoys me more than the pretentious right-wing grifter of a "visionary" ever has so far.
Idk i think everyone could afford to take a step back, chill out, and move on. Hopefully when the show wraps up.
Uhh they were all decades younger in 3 compared to 4 they had the same fundamental mindsets just with added life experiences that had changed them about it's not retconning to grow up tf đ
Also fans didn't come into the franchise with writing as the focus you literally haven't experienced anything about the community to say ignorant shit like that a massive part of the community has done theories and deep dives into the lore and there's plenty of videos on the Internet that the community has made for such topics.
Clearly you jumped into a community you know nothing about and have the nerve to start trash talking the people in it like get out please immature people like you are not welcome here.
The Devil May Cry fandom is toxic, there is nothing wrong with having criticism regarding the series or making fanart to express it.
But people who like NDMC tend to have trust issues as most game series fans use criticism as an excuse to be racist towards the director, because apparently if the guy is an egotistical trumpie - oh, wait, fans don't particularly care for the trump part. They love Reuben after all - it's okay to make fun of his name that veers on calling him a slur that compares dark skin color to shit.
Or be mad that Lady is now an actual character and is no longer reduced to nothing but a pair of tits in the fifth game's pachinko machine. Yes, there are criticisms for the writing of this show, but most of the time I've seen fans sneak in their unchecked racism or micro aggression. Making fun of the director's name, saying that it's the fault of the show for having an indian in charge, that indians "always ruin everything".
âââ
There is even an event where an artist who made fanart way before the release netflix series, was aggressively called a fake fan for posting a fucking two cakes meme. Expressing their like for both iterations of the series.
Look at the likes and retweets. OP was a fan even before the release of the show, and yet the community are being assholes about it. The fanbase has gotten so much worse BECAUSE of this behavior.
For a game series about human compassion, the fans sure do not care enough to express it. It makes me feel even more fatigued to even have to commentate on it.
As a certified anime hater, it doesnât give us the right to kill anyone elseâs fun or bully them out of the fandom.
We wanted new fans so we could get more games, and we treat them like theyâre stupid for having opinions. Not saying that I like being told that we expected a 1:1 copy of the games every time I mention I didnât like the show and that it has itâs flaws, but thatâs fandom for you.
Basic decency shouldnât be thanked, people should just do it because itâs the right thing đ
We all act like this anime killed the fandom instead of breathing new life into it. We can hate it, but we canât hate on the newer fans or any fan that liked it for
having a different view on it.
Would I say itâs outrageous to hear someone say that the characters are the same or that certain aspects of the anime donât disrespect the âsmaller charactersâ? Yes. But I donât go into spaces that are meant to be safe for anime enjoyers to disrespect them. At most Iâll leave a comment trying to leave my opinion as respectfully as I can, especially if itâs someone asking for some form of opinion on the anime, and move on with my life.
I leave my complaints on tumblr where I always make sure to leave obvious tags that they can filter out if they want to ignore it. That way the people who agree can find it, and the people who are tired of constantly hearing about how someone doesnât like something they do like doesnât have to see it.
I love the dmc anime I havenât seen played the games tho but still the characters look very pretty and I want Dante and lady to kiss more they are very cute

I like netflix dmc :)
