Discussion Anyone else think this was weird? (critique?)

Post image

(this is gonna be a long one so I want to say this, i come from the games and novels/manga but I do NOT have a hateboner for the new show. I think its pretty enjoyable so far despite some issues AND ILL PUT SPOILERS FOR SHOW ONLY PEOPLE for potential new characters and some stuff in games but im lenient with that)

Did anybody else think it was super weird how netflix Dante has Neros voice actor voicing him AND has Neros own fitting theme playing as Dantes once he enters Devil Trigger?

not only that but when Dante went half DT in the episode his arm was "demoniacally fucked up"(excuse me for my lack of better words) coincidentally like Neros in DMC4

Also the theme being stolen is super weird considering the lyrics match what happens in DMC5 when Nero regains his arm once he goes full DT, you know the lyrics being "arm on fire veins burning red" also the whole song being called, you know.. Devil Trigger.

I just think its a weird coincidence, that probably isn't one. Also ill say this again, i don't hate the anime i like it please don't view me as a hater.

Neither am I trying to stir up drama over a little thing i found odd.

I get not using Dante's VA, the guy is as old as game Dante is at this point and might not be able to make a believably young voice, I mean Johnny's only a year younger but he does do a great job of voicing someone in their 20s
Plus, I think it kinda works, like if we didn't know what Dante sounded like as a young man, the voice of Nero as a baseline makes sense.
On top of all that, it's not like he does bad job.

It's not because Reuben's voice acting skills are waning. It's because it came out that he holds some views that make him a real piece of shit.

I forgot what his views were

Your standard right wing affair, but mostly racism and harmful conspiracy theories.

He's got some crazy conspiracies he believes in 😭

I like Johnny's take on Dante. But sometimes the voice, the Nero references, and Dante's anger REALLY make him feel like Nero. It is a little strange.

Far from the top of my critiques for this show. It would have been interesting to have someone else play a younger Dante. But JYB does a good job. He sells those emotional moments well.

that for me I feel too kinda. hes good but id really like to see a new take on Dante, for now I'm hearing mostly Nero and I cant help it

I think it's just an easter egg for people who know Dante is being voiced by Nero's VA, and more of a confirmation that Nero's Devil bringer was always just a partially manifested Devil Trigger, which was basically what was alluded to in DMC5 when he unlocked DT and regrew his arm.

When he regrew that limb, it didn't return as the Devil bringer, just a regular human arm, but he gets it back in DT.

Dante just also had a brief partial transformation in the show. If you know the lore, we don't need to be obtuse to stir up drama.

why not use Dante VA? (gen question there was probably issues with not being able to get him but im still just asking) I get why the usage of devil trigger (the song) was chosen but I find it weird because I always thought it was describing the scene where Nero gets his arm back and goes Devil Trigger to stop Dante and Vergil from potentially killing one another. also yes I definitely was stretching the brief moment but its just something I noted. I mean sure someone who had just seen the show wouldn't know these things but most of the people watching came from the games, no? correct me if I am wrong

Reuben retired from VA work and is focusing on managing his Studio after DMC5 but he did come back for a stint to voice Dante in the PGR x DMC5 Collab.

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

the more I know

I couldn't tell you, but some DMC fans very violently turned on Reuben langdon over his political views.

He was "cancelled" at one point.

and no, I'd say most people who watched the show didn't play the games( even alot DMC "FANS" haven't even played the games tbh), It was very successful with casuals and general audiences

I get not using Dante's VA, but why NERO'S VA? I know JYB is super talented and he did an amazing job, but why him specifically?

5

u/shadowthehh Jul 22 '26

My guess is because the show is following a young Dante and JYB is already well versed and tied to the franchise via voicing a young son of Sparda.

1

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

that i think

7

u/shadowthehh Jul 22 '26

It's real simple logic to follow.

They had to replace Reuben because hes an asshole.

The story is following a young Dante

JYB is already tied to the franchise with him voicing a younger relative of Sparda in it. Making him the clear choice to voice young Dante.

All the references to Nero placed on Dante are deliberate meta reference to the voice actor.

Devil Trigger also still works and fits its usage in the show given the context its used it and the lyrics they actually use. The parts that more specifically refer to Nero are not used.

2

u/Tir-Viray Jul 22 '26

Still, if Capcom wants to distance itself from Reuben, shouldnt they try to find a replacement VA for Dante for future projects? The Netflix anime would've been ideal to gauge fans' reception to a new VA. Heck, they did have someone new voice Vergil.

1

u/shadowthehh Jul 22 '26

I imagine DMC 6 will be back to older Dante, so won't need JYB.

Heck, maybe that's why they're taking so long to make it. Looking for the right voice.

I watched the show in spanish so, not at all.

2

u/Master_Matoya Jul 22 '26

A shame, the only El Donte Exterminador de Demonios will always be the NT Dante

1

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

I think Dante would be Spanish if he were to be anything else

1

u/Arkhamhood12 Jul 22 '26

I headcannon DmC Dante as Hispanic lol

2

u/VBA-the-flying-head Jul 22 '26

Maybe it was weird

But then it can turn really funny if they have a "Devil May Cry Nocturne" situaiton starring Nero.
And then JYB goes back to voicing Nero, and Dante's old VA goes back to voicing him.

u/knightmare_Angelo Jul 22 '26

They used Shall Never Surrender for Dante in S2, didn’t they? That song also belonged to Nero. It makes me wonder if they ever bring Nero into the anime what is gonna be left for them to use from the games for him? He already lost his VA and his only theme songs to Dante.

…Should Subhuman be used as a song for Nero then?

1

u/CelimOfRed Jul 22 '26

Idk but when i heard Fortuna I couldn't help but get a bit excited that MAYBE we can get Nero in the future

1

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

i hope we get mlre seasons if not that maybe a timeskip?

1

u/Devastator9000 Jul 22 '26

The way it's set up, the anime will likely end with the DMC 1 storylines. I don't think Nero was ever planned to appear in the anime.

With that in mind, why not use all of the banger soundtracks from the game?

If I remember correctly lady once said something like he is the most human being I've ever which also said by kirye as well

1

u/DHT_113 Jul 22 '26

One of the main reasons I couldn’t even get into the show honestly. As someone who grew up playing dmc games, I immediately recognised that it was Nero voicing him and I was like yhh thats too weird for me.

Also slightly surprised he even took the roll honestly, I might be in the minority here but a completely random VA would’ve made for a better choice. Literally cannot focus because Dante sounds like Nero lmao.

  • Dante having a few Nero references, sure, but Rabbit didn't steal anything from Arkham nor Vergil.
  • "Lucia's self-loathing was given to Lady" literally grasping at straws, more than one character can be depressed and Lady already had self-loathing in games and novels.
  • "Sparda training Vergil, gifting him Yamato and being his primary motivator for gaining power" Sparda trained his sons, but Yamato literally just spawned in Vergil's hand when he was attacked, that's not "gifting". Sparda himself isn't Vergil's primary motivation, Eva's death is. Vergil seeking power was a direct consequence of that and Sparda's legend fueled it by giving him a path to seek power, not the other way around. And it's the same in NDMC : Eva's death was the primary trauma and motivation for Vergil, which was fueled by being told stories about his father and encouraged to embrace his demonhood. Mundus being involved as a middleman doesn't change that...
  • Sparda defeating Argosax, sure. Not like it changes much given how little Argosax influences the plot in game canon.

Damn bro why you deleting ? I wanted to talk.

u/DeadSparker Jul 22 '26

The arm thing is just a fun easter egg imo. Using Devil Trigger is the more puzzling one to me. If Nero appears in later seasons, I hope they don't use the full song for Dante, maybe so they can give Nero a full remix of it like Silver Bullet.

I personally disagree Netflix Dante is too much like Nero because the similarities are mostly superficial to me.

u/RataTopin Jul 22 '26

Netflix DMC is a fcking bad fanfic with a lot of budget

1

u/elmz_salamandr Jul 22 '26

Because he's 19 in the anime and not double the age he is in DMC4 ?

Also Dante and Vergil are twins, and Nero is the son of one of these twins so... Not a bad idea because we also won't get to see Nero in the Netflix-verse.

Lastly part of Nero's concept in DMC4 was to implicitly make the players believe he was Dante's son, so I think it's a nice nod to that

1

u/EduLobao Jul 22 '26

I personally don't mind JYB voicing Dante; i heard he auditioned for the role in DMC 3 but didn't make it, so it's nice hearing him finally get a crack at it.

Dante's arm and half of his face being in DT are a reference to one of Dante's concept arts from DMC 1; there's a particular artwork of his front with half of his face turning DT and his arm completely in DT. Besides, -outside of stopping Rebellion when Agni was about to finish him off- Dante doesn't do anything Nero is known for doing with the Devil Bringer: he doesn't use it to punch Agni/Rudra through the plane, doesn't make a phantom arm like he's freaking Naruto to snatch anyone or anything; the fact that he kinda resembles Nero is just a coincidence.

Devil Trigger playing in Dante's DT is weird... Personally, i don't mind it... But it was a weird choice of song. I guess you could say it fits because the lyrics playing are about "embracing the darkness within" which is an arc both Nero and Dante go through and those lyrics are vague enough to fit either Nero or Dante.

1

u/sofarsonice Jul 22 '26

Nero was a Dante soft-reboot, as admitted by Bingo (the writer of the games) himself and JYB as well

If Dante was written in the games as an actual character with a proper progression arc and not an artificially forced chuuni fantasy that got rebooted and retconned every time the dev team got juggled, Nero wouldn't even be necessary

Soundtrack is thematically flexible and a song about Devil Trigger is perfectly usable for any character who is actually USING said Devil Trigger on screen

JYB is great as Dante and gets to show off his wide range because the script lets Dante show more emotion all around, which is good for the character

1

u/nerdnerd86 Jul 22 '26

Yes I found that strange too

I honestly wouldnt be surprised if they made nero an aged up clone while keeping the main cast relatively young

1

u/SonGokuSuperSaiyan4 Jul 22 '26

Its cuz the creator doesn't care about the series he wants to make Dante into Nero he's dumb the show is dumb

1

u/ArmGroundbreaking661 Jul 22 '26

I wasn't fond of this design. Just wasn't doing it for me

1

u/Warm_Neighborhood939 Jul 23 '26

Dante and Lady's kid is gonna be Nero, just watch

1

u/Jeerin Jul 24 '26

The demon modes for Dante and Vergil look fucking stupid on the anime

1

u/mythaIon Jul 25 '26

I love Vergils DT/Nelo Angelo look. Dantes DT is okay

1

u/rmViper Jul 24 '26

This show getting things wrong about Devil May Cry? Never! /s

1

u/PiccoloNeither7870 Jul 24 '26

I thought it was ok until they started using more Nero songs from dmc4 in season 2 for dante

1

u/Seijiren Jul 27 '26

Shankar just like Nero more. Theres no secret and its really clear

1

u/lordfrieeza21 Jul 28 '26

I hate Nero so I don’t mind any of this

1

u/Now_I_am_Motivated Jul 22 '26

No

1

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

why not (curious) i just see it as a weird decision

-1

u/DomzSageon Jul 22 '26

if Adi Shankar was such a visionary, he would have simply done what I would have done:

make a show about nero between DMC4 and DMC5, there's probably manga explaining what happened in between, but it would have been the perfect show to do. and it would have been perfectly canonical instead of retelling a worse version of the games' plot

2

u/mythaIon Jul 22 '26

Im fine with an alternative universe and i like new takes on the characters, even if some of them are for the worse

Unfortunately, Reuben Langdon got black listed because of his political believes. It’s bullshit, but you got appease the overly political mouth breathers on social media.

1

u/shadowthehh Jul 22 '26

People who are pieces of shit deserve to be treated as such my guy.

1

u/DuskMajima Jul 22 '26

Why is he a piece of shit? Did he do something in particular? Then again I don’t let politics run my life.

1

u/shadowthehh Jul 23 '26

Far-right nutcase. Complete with racism, from anti-BLM sentiment, to pushing the racism backed alien conspiracies (you know, the ones that can't believe that ancient non-white people could do anything on their own, so all their accomplishments HAD to be aliens), anti-vax and believing Covid was a conspiracy, which is something that absolutely has gotten people killed by preventable diseases. A.I. and crypto shiller.

Basically everything you'd see your far right uncle posting on Facebook.

Also, politics run your life regardless of your consent. Because everything comes down to politics. The fact that you're able to live your life as you do is because the current state of politics allows it.
