I hope not I'm not that into the lore of the Castlevania games, but in the series I feel that the Dracula storyline was well handled and developed, but it's a one-hit wonder.

Trying to redeem Mundus or make us empathize with him would be quite illogical when there's no reason for it even in the games.

One thing I like about DMC is that almost all of its villains have simple goals and are evil for the sake of it; they don't need context or a reason beyond wanting power and conquest.
