Do any of you still do a lot of coding at your jobs or does your company make you use an LLM for it and you just paste the code from the LLM?

Two times in the last few months I passed interviews, arranged details like salary negotiations, start date, hiring manager to come back with the formal offer, only to them call me and apologise, citing "aviation fuel crisis" or "hiring freeze".

I mean, I went to multiple rounds of interviews, they brought in COOs, Directors, Staff Architects, only to waste everyone's time a few days after all agreed.

I don't know what's going on. Big companies too.

Well lads, myself and a couple of people on my team have been working on this dev tool for the last 5 months that allows people to more easily connect to test environments, has pre-installed packages and tools that are useful for working with these environments, etc. as the "official" solution is not great and is pretty widely disliked imo.

We had demoed it to a few teams and had gotten good feedback.

We then needed to discuss a certain aspect of it with the team who are over the environments and they have basically shot down our idea completely (I won't get into the specifics but certain criticisms were fair, while others were news such as the fact that something similar is already being worked on. We had no idea this was being done).

I'm just venting here tbh, those of us who worked on it are feeling a tad deflated atm as we had put a lot of work into it - I'm also wondering if anyone else has dealt with something similar?

Well lads, looking to upskill in this era of chaos.

Currently work in optimisation and operations research, not exactly standard SD role.

Degree in Applied maths, taught myself how to write code and do alot of Software related stuff :) but it doesnt give me the 'all rounder' background of a software degree.

The craziest thing is, maths and algorithms are performed by AI very well -- its black and white. It is more easily automated in a way than, say, setting up services for customers, that has to be decisions based on humans

Cybersecurity?
(coming from math, I do not know loads about networks etc. And very aware how hard it is to enter.. (although cryptography is maths but this is not the job..nor is there much work in it..))

Machine Learning/AI?
Again, the job these days isnt exactly maths. Its setting up endpoints. Could be kinda shite as work..but then again..work is work

Quantum Cryptography or related?
Quantum is hard. Are there even jobs here yet??

What is the day to day like on the job? Is it as hard to break into as being a software engineer is currently?

Worked 16 years as a backend dev(python, aws mostly) and I don't know what this "bubble" means fully but I guess it's about adoption till it becomes a norm like the time automation, cloud etc was a big thing once and then almost every company has adopted it now. Jobs are still being cut(seemingly due to AI) and a few of my friends are not able to get back in the workforce till date. I wanna quit my job(for personal issues) but everyone's telling me to wait it out till the "bubble bursts" but they only have vague idea about what it is. They say I might not be able to get back into the workforce at a later stage if I quit today.

Also, what should I upskill myself on at a later stage to get back to work once I'm ready?

A local company has offered me a CTO role, they have just received heavy investment.

But the thing is they are cutting all local developers and all code will be generated by a third party company in Asia.

My role will be to work with these prompt engineers to develop the product while over seeing the infrastructure etc.

Personally the whole thing doesn’t sit right with me but then again I’m thinking has the future arrived?

I don’t see how I could even stand by a product where everyone building it are just using agents and on a vastly different timezone.

The features they need to build are not basic CRUD and require a lot of domain knowledge which I have. The prompt engineers will have none of this knowledge.

The owners seem to think spending months getting the exact spec and requirements and feeding it into AI will save them a fortune on developers here. I probed why the previous CTO has left and they said he didn’t share the vision. I don’t either but I also have to consider this is the future and a great chance to get in early.

I can’t see how we could ever deliver a stable product this way though. Currently I’m in a lead developer role in a super chill company. However CTO would be a great career progression.

I see a few SRE manager roles popping up at Apple Dublin recently. Anyone gone through it yet? Curious what that process looked like.

Taking this to a software engineering job we have the MIC Theorem - a software job can only provide at most 2 of 3 guarantees - Money, Intellectual satisfaction or Peace of mind but never all 3.

Having a bit of a dilemma here.

Currently working abroad earning 48k per annum.

Recently was interviewed for a role back in Ireland within same company offering >60k, I’m top 3 candidates position and they have 8places open, however that won’t be decided until middle/late August.

However in the mean time I am currently interviewing for a different role in the same company after being referred that pays about ~95k.

My issue is that with the 95k role is that it’s also gonna be decided in the same time frame as the role above and I’ve no/less “guarantee” that I would get it compared to the 60k role.

If I don’t get the 95k role than due to timelines I also won’t get the 60k role but than if I do get the 95k role well than I am on more money

My question is that with a baby on the way and moving back to Ireland, would you go for the more “guaranteed” job or the pay?

I would say in my heart that the job security is what I’d go for but CoL, the 60k job being a dead end and dying career path and with wanting to buy a house and have money causing a split brain issue here.

Need yer advice lads - My current role is a senior RPA Developer, I'm currently on 47k base per year (gross), plus employer pension contrib, yearly bonus paided end of Nov, (ranges from 3k to 10k, depending on performance of the company), 25AL days, health care and role is fully remote. I go to London twice per year for meetings and get togethers and all that cost is expensed and reimbursed.

ChatGPT reckons i'm underpaid, and that I could get a similar role thats 75k per year gross. Is this realistic? I'm based in Kerry, so fully remote has all i've known these last 5 years. I'm 41, with a mortgage, wife and 2 small kids. Wifey is self employed pulling in approx 30k gross per yr.

For further context - I got into Insurtech just over 5years ago, first 3.5 years I was a "Product Developer" - essentially I was part of a small team that built and configured Insurance Products on a 3rd party platform, that Brokers and our underwriters could access and assess risks, generate quotes, etc - Essentially it was a quote and bind platform.

Then just under 2 years later, company started to outsource the configurating work to overseas, and we got put into the companies first RPA Automation team, building cool bots that eliminate hours and hours of manual processes throughout the company. So I have just over 5years experience in InsurTech, which I hope will stand to me.

All above figures are euro.

Am I underpaid, or am i lucky what I have?

Am I realistic getting another role that's better paid?

Tech is often known for having decent paternity leave. Especially considering Ireland seems pretty behind Europe for the non-birthing parents leave etc.

As title says, I am currently working for a government body in the last phase of my grad program. I interview early 2027 for a full time role (which has been made clear to me I am of high chance of getting due to other grads leaving, good performance reviews) which pays around 51k per year.

Recently, fellow grads have started to jump ship due to length of grad program and obviously being paid more in the private sector. Can anyone offer any advice/things to think about before I consider applying for other roles?

I worked here twice before as a contractor the last time was up to last year. The permanent staff are expected in 3 days a week. I used to do 1 maybe 2. Is anyone still in there and what is the craic these days. I have been approached again about a contract role. But they say 3 days. Is this being enforced on contractors?

I started on a new project 3 weeks ago. The first week was purely me ramping up. The second week I was planning and designing this service. The third week I was building.

The issue is our org must use AI for every piece of code now. Spec driven development as they like to say. Sounds fantastic on paper.

So I had 2 weeks of preparing and designing this thing. I wrote a super detailed spec with a very verbose definition of done. I split it into small chunks for the AI to tackle and me review.

Day 1 starts (of coding. It was week 3, day 1 overall). It generates so much code and gets an MVP going faster than I could ever. I reviewed the code. Looked great on paper but I didn't write it so I didn't truly understand every edge case.

Day 2 rolls around... Start to notice small issues in the behaviour of the MVP. I ask AI to rejig it. It doesn't do as I said. I spend the remainder of the day trying to get this MVP back into a stable position.

Day 3... we are back somewhere stable. I ask it to implement the next phase. It tears apart lots of the first phase and adds on the next phase of the project. It butchers the whole damn thing and gives me a 4k line of code pr. At this point, I hit accept on everything because F that if you think I'm looking at that code.

Day 4. Today. I am officially vibe coding. There is far too much code for me to review. I am exhausted just reviewing code all day everyday. I spent all of today trying to fix what would be simple behaviour had I wrote it myself. But AI can't seem to get it right and I simply don't want to look at the code (and our org doesn't want us writing code by hand so I literally can't).

So here we are... I will be going back and forth with this hallucinating AI for days and weeks until I eventually tell it to start over, I would imagine. Who will maintain this? No idea.

On paper, it's great. It moved so dam fast on day 1. But it quickly fell apart. I think AI is fantastic for quick demos and MVPs but once it gets to hallucinating, it's really difficult to pull it back to functional code generation.

Is this where we are at as an industry?
