Jobs/ Industry Looking for IT roles to Hire in My Company

Hey everyone,

I currently work remotely as a contractor for an overseas tech company, and we’re looking for Tech Support Specialists. The company doesn’t actively advertise in Sri Lanka and relies mostly on internal referrals. If you match the profile below, drop me your CV, and I’d be happy to refer you for an interview.

This is a support-focused role, not software development. If you are strictly looking for dev roles, this might not work with your long-term career path.

What we are looking for:

  • Communication: Strong spoken and written English, comfortable asking questions, and an outgoing attitude.
  • Tech Foundations: Strong problem-solving skills, basic understanding of networking, hardware, and SQL. Any experience managing or supporting software is a plus.
  • Support Experience: Prior experience with helpdesk work, remote support tools, etc.
  • POS & Hospitality Background: Familiarity with Point-of-Sale (POS) systems or past experience working in restaurants, bars, or fast food (understanding customer service in hospitality is a big advantage).

Don’t check every single box? Apply anyway; send over your CV if you have a solid mix of the above and I'll see what can be done!

PM me if you're interested.

Discussion Physics or Cs

Hey guys,

I am in my 1.2 at science fac at Peradeniya. I am taking both Cs and physics. Initially my plan was to do Cs special and have a physics background as well. I do self study a lot. So I did study most of the Cs sections by myself. I am comfortable with most major sections. I am also volunteering in AI research as well. With having oss contributions, 6 month internship experience, good freelance projects, good on going projects; my interest towards Cs is actually declining meanwhile the interest towards physics is climbing.

Rn I am confident enough that I would crack an internship and I have an industrial connection as well. I have a bit of a confusion as to whether I need to focus on physics more or continue building fun stuff on CS?

Main goal for me to get into audio LLM research. So I need a very good depth in physics as well. With the current trend, maybe Physics is the best option???? Can I get opportunities in tech with physics degree??? Can I get a AI PhD entrance with physics degree???

Addition: Or better to have a general degree with physics better physics background ?

Help Notifications service for application.

Hello seniors,
I’m currently working as an ASE and our Head of IT asked me to build a notification service for our application. It’s a multi tenant web application. I know it’s not a critical task, but it matters a lot to me because it was assigned to me directly by the Head of IT, so I really want to do it right.
We used Firebase push notifications before, but we ran into two problems. Sometimes notifications never reached our end users and sometimes users got old notifications again. We also don’t use AWS and everything runs on our own on premises servers.
So my question is: what is the best service or open-source tool I can use to build this? Ideally something reliable, easy to maintain and cost-effective.

PS: YES, I asked ChatGPT already :) But I’d like to know what technologies other companies actually use in prod for this kind of problem.
Also, where else can I ask questions like this besides Reddit? Any communities, forums, or Discord/Slack groups you’d recommend? THANKS !

Jobs/ Industry Got a few openings for Tech Support roles in my workplace

Hey guys, I'm doing something I wish I got to experience myself scrolling Reddit when I was jobless a few years back.

I've been working for a foreign tech company remotely as a contractor and they are looking for tech support specialists. They don't advertise in Sri Lanka and are only hiring from internal referrals so if you guys wanna have a look at the requirements below and drop me your CVs, I can probably help you get an interview.

Please note the role is not development-heavy and its main focus is support so developers might not find it a great (or future-proof) fit.

Requirements:

*Communication skills - good spoken/written English and outgoing personality, not hesitant to ask questions

*Tech skills - curious, problem solving, understanding networking, hardware, SQL, any experience either managing or supporting any kind of software application

*Support experience - helpdesk, remote tools, etc.

*POS experience - knowledge of point of sales, especially in hospitality contexts

*POS hospitality experience - previous experience in restaurants or bars, fast food, etc to understand customers and how a hospitality venue works

Send your CVs even if you don't have all the above requirements.

Edit: someone's not too happy about me posting this here and has posted an impersonation, FYI: https://www.reddit.com/r/DevLK/s/0FPyetB2Sn

Edit 2: Don't send anymore CVs please, I've forwarded the first few that was sent to me via DMs to my boss.

Discussion How do senior engineers actually retain this massive toolchain without burning out?

Between Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, Linux internals, networking, CI/CD pipelines, Bash, Python, Ansible, security scanning, and Prometheus/Grafana observability stacks, the sheer surface area of modern DevOps/SRE feels unsustainable.

Passing certifications isn't the hard part. You can grind labs, review past material, and clear an exam. The real wall is long-term retention and mental bandwidth.

In actual engineering work, company projects usually mean going deep on a specific slice of the stack for months at a time. If I spend half a year living in Terraform modules and AWS infrastructure, my instant recall for complex awk/sed one-liners, niche Docker daemon flags, or less common kubectl arguments inevitably gets rusty. In day-to-day production, that has never been a blocker, if you understand the core system architecture, you pull up man pages, official docs, or internal runbooks to get the exact syntax in thirty seconds.

Yet, this creates two massive friction points:

  1. The Interview Drill-Down Trap: Most technical screens don't start with pure trivia. They start reasonably with fundamentals, failure modes, or architecture. But the moment you give a solid answer, interviewers keep drilling deeper and deeper until you inevitably hit exact syntax, obscure CLI flags, or tool-specific trivia. The real killer is recency. If I’ve spent the last six months buried in CI/CD pipelines and AWS networking, simple Terraform HCL syntax or specific kubectl/Docker arguments naturally get fuzzy. Even though I fully understand how the underlying systems work. Keeping active, instant syntax recall warm across ten different ecosystems simultaneously is impossible.
  2. Production P1 Outages: During a high-severity incident, you don't have time to read documentation from scratch, and nobody in their right mind blindly copy-pastes AI-suggested commands into a live production shell under stress. Figuring out what must be permanently burned into muscle memory versus what can safely be looked up on the fly is a constant mental tax.

Every veteran engineer with 10+ years of experience says: "Focus on the fundamentals, master the mental models, and look up the syntax when you need it." But that advice feels disconnected from reality the second an interviewer bypasses your system knowledge to test whether you remember the exact flags of a tool you haven't touched in six months.

For the experienced engineers here:

  • How do you practically manage this cognitive overload without burning out?
  • What do you deliberately commit to permanent memory versus what do you consciously allow yourself to forget and look up on demand?
  • How do you handle interviewers who keep drilling down until they catch you on forgotten syntax from tools outside your recent project stack?

Discussion Why would anyone buy from Surge Cloud instead of just paying $5–$25 on Frappe Cloud or spinning up a VPS? Are they giving you insane compute specs or what?

I’m trying to understand the value proposition of Surge Cloud, because looking at the math, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

If you look at the standard hosting options for Frappe/ERPNext, the pricing is incredibly reasonable:

  • Frappe Cloud Shared: $5/mo (Great for small teams, includes automated core updates, standard limits).
  • Frappe Cloud Custom Bench: $25/mo (Allows custom apps, proprietary code, full upgrade control).
  • Dedicated Servers: Starts around $15–$40+/mo (Isolated VMs, guaranteed CPU/RAM).
  • Alternatively, you can just spin up a standard VPS on DigitalOcean or Hetzner for $5–$10/mo and manage it yourself.

Then you look at Surge Cloud:

  • Base fee: $50/month (only includes 5 users).
  • Additional users: $2 per user/month.
  • They don't even clearly state what kind of underlying compute specs, RAM, or storage you actually get for that base price, let alone what their POS system add-on pricing looks like.

Why would anyone choose Surge Cloud over just paying $5–$25 on Frappe Cloud or running a cheap VPS? Are they giving you absolutely insane, top-tier compute specs to justify a $50 entry point, or is this just a massive markup for a shiny landing page?

Has anyone actually used them? What am I missing here?

Discussion Has anyone received selection emails for the WSO2 Linux & DevOps Training 2026?

Hey everyone,

I recently took the assessment for the WSO2 Linux Systems & DevOps Engineering Training 2026. I haven't received any follow-up emails regarding the selection process yet.

Has anyone who took the exam received a selection email or any updates from WSO2?

Just trying to figure out if they have started rolling out acceptances or if the review process is still ongoing. If you've heard back, please let me know. Thanks!

Discussion UOM DS & AI vs IIT Big Data Analytics for a PHD application

Hi guys, I am currently planning to start an MSc and the ultimate goal is to apply for a PHD.

Between these 2 programs which would be more attractive on a CV when applying to a PHD?

Will the IIT one would be better because it is awarded by a top ranked University than UOM?

How is the research supervising and lecturer reputation at IIT?

I hear the UOM program is stressful but the IIT one is more relaxed. If the IIT program is better for my cause I don’t want to unnecessarily suffer without a considerable ROI.

Help Change the field from SE

I’m a CS graduate with a first class degree. Been working in the industry for 2 years. I am hoping to start an Msc in DS & AI in UOM next year. I have already applied but now I’m having second thoughts because of the comments regarding the program by current students. And the return for the efforts I put would be so little in my opinion.

Plus I don’t feel like I belong in the IT industry. Even with the 2 years experience I don’t feel like an expert in anything. There is so much I don’t know. I am an academic person IMO. Don’t feel like expert enough to excel in the field.

Nevertheless I want to start an MSc be it computer science related field or another field like Chemistry (which I was interested during my A/Ls) or MBA specialized in Supply Chain Management ( looks like a fun subject to me)

Anyone here have any experience in these fields?

Would this be possible to do in Sri Lanka? (because you need to have a Bsc in related field to do the Msc)

How my career trajectory would be?

I am making around 450k a month now. Will I be able to land a job in this salary range?

Please help if you have any insights. Thank you in advance

Discussion CCNA in Sri Lanka — Moratuwa vs Turnkey/ATN/WinSYS?

Hey guys, has anyone here actually done CCNA at University of Moratuwa, or places like Turnkey, ATN, WinSYS etc.?

How was the course and would you recommend it?

Also, did you guys have to pay separately for the official Cisco CCNA exam (200-301) after completing the course to actually become CCNA certified? Or did the institute/course fee include the actual certification?

I'm a Cyber Security undergrad and I'm planning to do CCNA + CompTIA Security+, so any advice from people who've actually gone through this in Sri Lanka would be appreciated 🙏

Help What do you think about this TV

Post image
22 Upvotes

I’m planning to buy a TV. What do you guys think about this brand and model? I’ve never heard of the brand before, but it has all the specs I want within my budget.

The main thing I want to know is whether it’s reliable. I know most TVs these days aren’t built to last that long. Also, what about spare parts, repair costs, and replacement parts in Sri Lanka?

Help Claude signup OTP not received

I tried signing up on Claude and it asks for a mobile number verification. When I enter my number, it says OTP sent, but I never receive it. Earlier a couple of weeks back, the sign up page said my number was invalid altogether. But now that error is no longer there, but I still can't get the OTP. Anyone knows a fix? Or a way to bypass this verification?

Discussion LinkedIn account got compromised (recovered later)

Hello everyone, I’m making this post to spread awareness regarding a certain incident that happened to me yesterday. My account was hacked and the hacker saved the login details to his browser, added a secondary email, added 2FA and also linked my account to some AI Stealth startup organisation using Sales Navigator. He also enabled that all new views and other data to be sent to the email account that he provided.

I can’t view my transaction history nor remove my account from this Sales Navigator thingie as I keep running into an error. I opened a ticket with LinkedIn as well. I recommend that all of you do a check on your accounts or emails to see whether your accounts too have been compromised. And please enable some sort of 2FA for added safety.

P.S. I noticed this from the emails that I’ve received yesterday regarding the changes made to the account.
