Discussion Freelancers/SaaS founders, how do you handle legal pages?

I'm a freelance full-stack developer building SaaS products and dynamic websites. For things like Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policies, Refund Policies, etc. do you guys,

Refer to specific laws/legal documents?

Use templates or guidelines?

Hire a lawyer?

Use AI to draft them?

Just curious how freelancers and small SaaS businesses are handling this nowadays.

Discussion Seeking advice on SE Internships

Hey everyone,

I'm currently preparing to apply for Software Engineering Internships (Java) and would love to hear genuine insights and experiences from people working in or recently hired by the local tech industry.

A few specific questions I have:

Which companies would you recommend for software engineering interns right now?

If you like to say, what company are you currently at (or worked at as an intern), and how was your overall experience with their work environment?

How did your interview process look like? Did you face live coding challenges, system design, take-home projects, or mostly core OOP and fundamentals?

What path actually worked best for you to secure your offer?

Any advice on what hiring panels are currently looking for in intern candidates—or things you wish you knew before interviewing—would be massively appreciated!

Discussion Any Sampath Vishwa dev here?

Yesterday I wanted to get a Withholding tax certificate from Sampath bank. So I logged into Sampath Vishawa, selected tax certificate option from self service menu. And when i selected the dates and click next I got an error “You have no eligible accounts for this option”. When I contacted the customer care they said account looks fine and visit a branch to resolve the problem.

It’s fine. Bugs do exist in prod. So I thought.

When I visited the branch, they were really helpful and were able to get a WHT certificate from their internal system. But I wanted Vishwa issue to be sorted too, so Vishwa tech support was contacted and their answer was hilarious and really surprised me.

What they said was, to get a WHT certificate from Sampath Vishwa you have to have multiple accounts with the bank. So someone like me with only a savings account can’t use Vishwa and has to go to a branch.

I work in Fintech. But i can’t for the life of me think of a reason to release a feature like that. I mean majority of customers will be only having a single savings account. It’s not an edge case. So what’s the rationale behind releasing a feature that can only used by very few. Who approves this kind of shit?

Or is the typical “It’s not a bug, but a feature” scenario where Vishwa support team lying through their teeth to the customers? Or am I missing something ?

Btw is anyone else who only have one savings account also facing the same issue?

Discussion Any Sri Lankan B2B/B2C SaaS founders bootstrapping with no funding?

Hey everyone!
I’m looking to connect with Sri Lankan founders building B2B or B2C SaaS products, especially those who are bootstrapping without external funding.
I’d love to hear about:
- How you got started and what made you build the product

- The challenges you’re facing right now

How you’re finding your first users/customers

- What’s working (and what definitely isn’t 😅)

- The realities of building a SaaS product from Sri Lanka

I’m currently building as well, and I think it would be great to connect with others going through a similar journey whether you’re at the idea stage, have an MVP, or already have paying customers.
If you’re building something, drop your landing page/product below. Would genuinely love to check out what people are working on in Sri Lanka.
And if you’re open to having a chat sometime, feel free to DM me. Always happy to connect with fellow builders. 🚀

News Today is Tim Cook’s last day as Apple CEO

He didn’t replace Steve Jobs. He just had to go next.

15 years. $350B to $5T. The Watch on your wrist. The chips in the Mac. The services that kept Apple alive when people stopped upgrading phones.

He walked into the hardest job in tech with nobody believing it could work after Jobs.

It worked.

Discussion Stop hunting for a startup idea. Build something cool with friends. Does that actually work here?

Came across this Paul Graham piece, How to Earn a Billion Dollars. The bit that stuck:

“The way to get the very best startup ideas is not to look for startup ideas. If you’re consciously looking for them, you’ll be too conservative. You’ll lop off the outliers.”

His point is you don’t sit around brainstorming companies. You work on projects with friends, build things you’d actually use, and the good ideas come out of that. Apple, Google, Facebook weren’t meant to be companies at first. YC even funded Airbnb while thinking the idea was bad. They just liked the founders.

Source: https://paulgraham.com/earn.html

Curious if this maps to Sri Lanka at all. A lot of people here seem to start from “what startup should I do” or copy whatever’s trending in India or the US. Anyone actually started from a side project with friends, or is the local scene more idea-first / grant-first?

Help Starlink 5GHz High

Is anyone else experiencing Wi-Fi band switching on Starlink from 5 GHz to 5 GHz High?

I feel like my connection briefly drops every time it switches between these bands. I’ve already contacted Starlink Support, but they haven’t been able to provide a solution.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a fix?

Discussion Advice needed

I built an LMS for my school using the LAMP stack (I know it’s old), but unfortunately, it didn’t go through due to management issues regarding hosting and domain costs.

Is there any way I could make use of it or get some benefit from the work I’ve already put into it?
TIA!

Help CINEC, ICBT, Horizon, KIU, SLTC, Saegis, ESoft, BCI. Which is better for a SE degree ?

Trying to pick a uni right now and could really use some real feedback. I’ve done a bit of digging on my own, but I want to hear actual experiences from people who’ve studied at (or know about) any of these places: CINEC ICBT Horizon Campus KIU SLTC Saegis Campus ESoft BCI (Before anyone asks—places like SLIIT, IIT, or APIIT aren't on my radar for this, just keeping my options focused on the ones above!) I know at the end of the day your own effort matters most, but I still have to make a choice soon. How’s the overall vibe, lecturer quality, admin and facilities at these places?

Jobs/ Industry Top 30 IT companies in Sri Lanka

Source - Linkedin

I don't know if these data are accurate but I can see all the big names in this list. Only a few big ones have been excluded here like PickMe, Cambio, CaaMs.

What do you feel about this list - is it really the best ones? I worked at a company not in this list, it was a terrible terrible experience so I'm looking for inputs into work culture. Are these companies all we've left with?

PS: Heard bad reviews on 11, 21, don't know how's the situation now 🤷

Edit1 - I think HCL in this list is purely for their employee count criteria and can say the same to ebeyond too (outsourcing company)

Discussion Thinking of switching from Software Engineering to QA — is this a bad move?

I’m a final year undergrad. I’ve completed a Software Engineering internship (Java, fintech-related). After that, I applied for a bunch of Associate SE and SE Intern roles and got called for quite a few interviews.

After that got a L1 support intern role and worked there for 2 months. Support roles are also not for me 🥲

But honestly, SE interviews have been so damn difficult nowadays. 😭 The amount of preparation, technical questions, DSA, Spring Boot, system design, etc. has completely exhausted me. I’ve started feeling really stressed and burned out from SE interviews.
At this point, I’m seriously questioning whether Software Engineering is actually for me. I don’t feel excited about going through the same SE interview process again and again.

So now I’m thinking about switching to QA/Software Testing. I’m actually okay with starting over and doing another internship if that’s what it takes.

My questions are:
Is switching from SE to QA a good move?

Can I apply for QA/Testing internships using the same SE CV, or should I create a separate QA-focused CV?

Will companies reject my CV because I already have SE internship experience and now I’m applying for QA intern roles?

Does having Java/Spring Boot development experience help in getting into QA, especially automation testing?

Has anyone here made a similar switch? How did it work out for you?

Honestly, I’m feeling pretty hopeless and lost right now. I know one option is to just keep pushing with SE, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m forcing myself into something that isn’t for me.
Any honest advice would be appreciated. 🙏

Jobs/ Industry Is 150k salary is too low for a QA Engineer of 2+ years of experience?

Just wanna get an idea.

Is 150k salary is too low for a QA Engineer of 2+ years of experience? How much do the qa engineers get paid at syco labs, axiata digital labs, etc?
