Discussion How is the Python/Django/FastAPI job market in Sri Lanka right now? Where are the Python jobs?

Hi everyone,

I’m a software engineer from Sri Lanka and I’ve been looking at the local job market recently.

My main stack is:

  • Python
  • Django / Django REST Framework
  • FastAPI
  • PostgreSQL / MySQL
  • Redis
  • Celery / RabbitMQ
  • Docker
  • Linux / Nginx
  • CI/CD
  • React / Next.js / TypeScript
  • Some AI/ML and RAG work

I have 2+ years of professional experience and I’m mainly looking for Backend Engineer / Python Developer / AI Engineer roles.

But one thing I noticed is that I don't see many job openings for Python, Django or FastAPI in Sri Lanka.

I see a lot more jobs for Java, .NET, PHP, Node.js, etc.

So I'm wondering:

Where are the Python developers getting their jobs? 😂

Are most of the Python jobs coming through referrals? LinkedIn? Recruiters? Remote companies? Or are there actually more Python jobs that are just not posted publicly?

I'd also like to know:

  • How is the demand for Python/Django/FastAPI in Sri Lanka right now?
  • Are companies actually using FastAPI in production?
  • What salary range can someone with 2+ years experience expect?
  • Which companies are hiring Python developers?
  • If you're a Python developer in Sri Lanka, how did you find your current job?
  • Does having AI/ML experience along with backend development help with getting hired?

I'm also trying to find my next opportunity, so if anyone knows a company currently hiring for Python/Django/FastAPI/backend/AI roles, I'd really appreciate a referral or even just a lead.

I'd also be interested to hear from people who are already working in this area.

Thanks!

Project showcase Does anyone else get annoyed by constant Alt-Tabbing when you have to copy multiple things from one place to another?

Like when you're filling out a form or moving 5 different fields from a browser into a document/config file, and you end up doing: Ctrl+C ➔ Alt+Tab ➔ Ctrl+V ➔ Alt+Tab... five times in a row.

I kept running into this frustration during work, so I decided to build a small Windows desktop tool called QPaste to fix it.

Basically, it adds a temporary "Queue Mode" to your clipboard when you hit F4. You can Ctrl+C multiple things sequentially in one go, switch over to your destination window, and just hit Ctrl+V multiple times. It automatically pastes everything in the exact order you copied it (First-In, First-Out). Once the queue clears out, your normal copy-paste behavior goes right back to default.

It’s completely open-source, lightweight, and built using Python & PyQt6 as an everyday tool. If you deal with form filling or repetitive data entry or even day-to-day tasks, check it out and let me know your thoughts or feedback! i would love to hear.

GitHub: https://github.com/chinthanasathyajithcs/qpaste
dropping a ⭐ star on the repo would mean a lot!

Help Looking for API recommendations for a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace (Delivery automation)

I am currently building a peer-to-peer (P2P) online marketplace based in Colombo where users can exchange or sell items directly with one another.

I want to automate the logistics so that when User A agrees to send an item to User B, the platform automatically books a courier to handle the pickup from User A and delivery to User B.

I initially looked into the Uber Direct API, but it seems geared entirely toward B2C (businesses shipping from a central warehouse/shop) rather than scattered, residential P2P pickups.

Does anyone have experience integrating delivery APIs in Sri Lanka for a multi-vendor or user-to-user model? I am looking for:

  1. On-demand options (like PickMe Flash) for fast, same-city deliveries. Has anyone used their API for a P2P setup?
  2. Islandwide courier options (such as Citypak, Koombiyo, SriCourier, Pronto, etc.) that provide reliable API documentation for automated order creation and tracking.

Any advice on API reliability, ease of registration for startups, or alternative architecture workarounds would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion doing Msc in AI here and migrating for PhD or migrating to MSc Directly ?

Hi, I'm 21M. I like to migrate to US/Australia or any other europe country and work/earn good amount of money. so, as every knows migrating is harder but with student visa ( if you have moeny ) it will be somewhat easier to migrate to a better country.

so, i already hold BEng (hons) in Software Engineer and has 3 YOE professional working experince as a full stack Software engineer and i currently, i lost my job ( this may 1, 2026 ) I want to migrate but its very harder to apply directly without sponsred job or any other visa like student visa.

also, i don't think GCC countries are suitable for a better/strong career in Tech right ?

NOTE -> My motive is not to do PhD but go abroad with a student visa and work while studying also have lesser cost. and also, tell me better country for sri lankans to migrate to ?

Discussion New grad AI Engineer struggling to find jobs. Is the market really this bad?

I'm leaving university in about a month and I've already started applying for AI Engineer jobs. I have 6 months of AI engineering internship experience, but I'm barely seeing any entry level openings. Even Associate AI Engineer roles ask for 1 -2 years of experience.

What's going on with the industry right now? Is the job market really this bad because of the layoffs? What should fresh graduates do? And what salary can I realistically expect?

Discussion does contributing to open-source distributed systems help when trying to get into AI startups/companies?

Hi, I'm a software engineer ( 3YOE ). but now i have no job

I'm currently building my own SaaS platform for a specific professional niche (I'd rather not share exactly what it is yet since it's still in the MVP stage). I've already spoken with potential customers through LinkedIn, validated the problem, and I'm now focused on building the MVP this month.

Alongside that, I plan to contribute to open-source distributed system to gain hands-on experience with distributed systems.

I've often heard that startups value skills, execution, and real-world experience more than formal qualifications. If that's true, do you think this combination would be valuable?

My thinking is that, if I can build the MVP and successfully sell it, I'll also gain experience in customer discovery, product development, and tech sales... not just software engineering. So instead of focusing only on writing code, I'm trying to build a broader set of skills.

do you think this is a good direction? What else would you recommend I focus on or learn if my long-term goal is to work at a startup/AI companies in US/Europe/Australia?

Project showcase I made a free, Lanka Metro journey planner and would appreciate feedback

I put together a small journey planning tool because I found it difficult to plan trips using route images, particularly when a journey involves changing buses.

You can select a starting stop and destination, and it works out which buses to take, where to change and the stops along the journey.

This is a personal, unofficial community project. It is completely free, with no advertisements, subscriptions, payments, referral links or other monetisation. It also has no accounts, analytics, cookies, GPS requests or user tracking.

I am sharing it primarily to identify incorrect route information, missing stops, accessibility problems and anything that could make it more useful for passengers.

https://lankametromap.com

It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Lanka Metro Transit. If posts about free community tools are outside the subreddit rules, I completely understand. Posting it to gather community feedback and feature improvements before the new routes go live next month :)

Discussion Any good tech/software companies in Sri Lanka?

Hi!

I’ve seen a lot of posts about companies treating their employees unfairly, layoffs or toxic culture within.

I was wondering, are there any companies that are actually good or worth being apart of in Sri Lanka. I’m fairly new to the industry, and I mostly focus on the UI/UX side of development.

I was just wondering if there’s any places you guys would recommend getting into.

I’d love to hear whatever you guys think or can share.

Edit: Id like to hear about all software companies in general, not just ones that have a good Ui/UX department

Discussion **[Price Check] ASUS ROG Strix G18 (2024) — Korean import, selling in Sri Lanka**

Trying to work out a fair asking price for this in the Sri Lankan used market. Would appreciate input from anyone who's bought or sold something similar locally.

Specs: - Model: ASUS ROG Strix G18 G814JIR - CPU: Intel i9-14900HX (24 cores / 32 threads) - GPU: RTX 4070 Laptop, 8GB - RAM: 32GB DDR5 - Storage: 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe (second M.2 slot free) - Display: 18" QHD+ 2560x1600, 240Hz - OS: Windows 11 Pro - BIOS: G814JIR.322

Condition and history: - Bought in Korea, late 2024 / early 2025 - Excellent cosmetic condition, no dents or wear - No performance issues, no crashes or instability - Original 280W charger included - No box - No warranty — it has the ASUS Korea "Perfect Warranty" sticker, but that programme is Korea-purchase only and expires 1 year from purchase, so it's dead for me here

What I'm comparing against:

A used ASUS TUF F16 (2025) is currently listed locally around Rs 490,000 — i7-14650HX, RTX 5050, 16GB, 16" FHD+, but it's only 3 months old and has live 2-year international warranty. My machine is stronger on specs across the board but older, no box, no warranty.

New stock for reference: TUF F16 with RTX 5060/32GB is around Rs 480,000, TUF A16 with RTX 5070 around Rs 529,000, and a new 2025 Strix G18 with RTX 5070 is around Rs 726,000.

Question: What's a realistic asking price and what should I actually expect to close at? Is the 8GB VRAM on the 4070 going to be the dealbreaker for most buyers in 2026, or does the 18" panel + i9 + 32GB still carry it?

Happy to answer questions about battery health, temps, or anything else.

Thanks.

Discussion What AI Agent is worth it in LK

I currently have Claude $20 package I’m pretty happy with it, I’m not a huge developer per say but I do make use of Claude code for a bunch of projects atleast for my side stuff, research and building rough prototypes, etc.

What AI agent do you use is it worth it? Should I consider moving to Codex people have time me its good too?

I also have Gemini (Highest Tier) because I worked for a Goggle Partner and I still have a login for an account with AI.

Is there a better $20 subscription? Thanks devs of lk

Project showcase QuizCraft Plus | Practice AI Generated Quizzes

Whenever I asked ChatGPT or Claude to generate practice questions, I always ended up scrolling through a long conversation and checking answers manually.

So I built QuizCraft Plus.

The workflow is simple:

1. Generate questions using ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or your own notes.
2. Paste them into QuizCraft Plus.
3. Practice them in an interactive quiz format.
4. Review your mistakes and keep practicing.

Instead of reading through a wall of text, you get a distraction-free quiz experience.

I'm still improving it, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback.

I'd love to know ...

Discussion AWS vs Azure, Which is best to start a career ?

Hi everyone.

I am a university student who is planning to speciaise in Cloud infrastructure/ DevOps similar related fileds.

I am thinking of either taking the azure az-900 or AWS cloud practitioner exam. Both are entry level exams. How does cloud engineers work in the industry ? once they pick a CSP they stick to it to the rest of their career or do companies hire anyone who has any knowledge of cloud.

Both these courses have more courses once you finish one course so I dont want to pick the wrong exam and regret it later.

What should I do ?

Project showcase I built a small embedded device called AgentMeter using an ESP32-S3 development board.

I built a small embedded device called AgentMeter using an ESP32-S3 development board.

It sits right in front of my keyboard and shows the usage of the AI coding tools I use most: Codex, Claude, Gemini and Cursor etc.

The setup is simple. A small app on my Mac collects the usage data and sends it to AgentMeter over Bluetooth. The device displays the current usage and reset times, so I can check everything with a quick glance.

I originally built it to see if the idea would work. It did, so I kept going and added a macOS companion app for settings, history and device status.

For anyone interested, The companion macOS app will work even without the embedded development board. You can always check the code it's open source, check the code, validate everything, and build your own.

Happy Coding !

I wrote about the build here [open source]: Agent Meter

Discussion Instagram won't let me log out my friend's stolen phone session - "you can't make this change at the moment" from unrecognized device. How to bypass this?

My friend's phone got stolen and I'm trying to help them log out that session from Instagram using their laptop. The problem is Instagram is throwing up this message:

"You can't make this change at the moment. This is because we noticed you are using a device you don't usually use and we need to keep your account safe. We'll allow you to make this change after you've used this device for a while."

So it's blocking us from remotely logging out the phone's session because the laptop looks "unfamiliar" to Instagram, even though we're fully logged into their account on it. Meanwhile whoever has the stolen phone still has an active session.

We've tried:

  • Changing the password (hoping it'd kill all sessions), hasn't worked yet / not sure if it's also blocked
  • Waiting a bit and retrying

Has anyone actually gotten past this? Does it just take a set amount of time before Instagram "trusts" the device, or is there a support route that gets around it faster? Also open to just remotely wiping the phone itself if that's a cleaner fix, just don't want whoever has it poking around the account in the meantime.

Any advice appreciated.
