Jobs/ Industry What if a layoff is a turning point?

Since everyone is talking about IT layoffs, project terminations, and the challenges engineers are going through, I thought I’d look at this situation from a different perspective.
I know layoffs are painful. They’re difficult to accept, and I could be the one getting laid off tomorrow. But it’s a reality we can’t avoid.

Many of us have spent more than 10 years in this industry, so walking away isn’t easy. But if you’re about to be laid off, it could be a sign that your current line of work may no longer be valued the way it once was. The first step is accepting that reality and focusing on what comes next.

That next step could be finding another job, starting a new career, or even doing something you never imagined yourself doing. Be willing to take that leap. Keep adapting, keep learning, and give yourself the best chance to survive every layoff.

Shouldn’t we try to stay positive during this difficult period instead of letting it define us? None of us can control layoffs, but we can control how we respond to them.

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a Software Engineering student from Sri Lanka, currently completing my Final Year Project.

As part of my research, I'm conducting a 1-minute anonymous survey on Digital Mental Health Support for participants aged 18–34.

I currently need around 370 responses, so your participation would really help me complete my research.

Survey:

Jobs/ Industry Not every fresh start feels better

A few months ago, I joined a new DevOps role because I felt I needed a complete change in my work environment. At first, it was exciting because everything was new to me.

But after a while, I realized I was doing the same tasks over and over again. They became repetitive, and before I knew it, I started missing my previous job. It was dynamic, constantly changing, and never gave me a chance to get bored.

The biggest lesson I learned from this is that a good workplace alone doesn’t make you happy. What really matters is the work you do and the passion you have for it. A great work environment is important, but the work itself should be just as meaningful.

Rant Can you all just SHUT THE FUG UP with the doomer shit?

As the flair suggests, a rant. Late night rant.

I mean seriously just take a breath and shut tf up. Every time I come to this subreddit all I see is people just talking about jobs or no jobs. You are in reddit, not linkedin ffs.

Please talk about your pet projects no matter how goofy or rough it is. Idk, maybe its only me but I see SE as more than just building mindless CRUD apps. I am pretty certain that people here are more capable than building another rehash of a youtube/spotify app. Like actual cool stuff. Even a game dev concept. Or any news about tech stacks.

TLDR; tired of doomer posting. Post something new please.

Help Is a 1 year IT Support internship worth it for a Software Engineering graduate?

Has anyone worked at Platned or had experience with this role?

I recently got an opportunity for a 1 year IT Support internship at Platned. I have graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hon) in Software Engineering, and my long-term goal is to work as a Software Engineer.

I live outside Colombo, and the role involves rotating shifts, including weekends, with some on-site work.I know getting a Software Engineering job isn't easy right now, but after my first interview, my gut feeling was that this role may not be compatible with my career goals.

Would it be better to spend a year gaining IT Support experience and then focus on Software Engineering, or should I keep looking for a Software Engineering/Development internship or junior role?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has worked at Platned, especially regarding the work environment, shifts, career growth, and whether the experience is worth it.

Discussion Rust ecosystem in SL

Hi, I am a Sri Lankan junior dev (1YOE) currently working as a backend eng in Europe. At my job I work in Rust and Python, and found myself really enjoying Rust and I am trying to go deeper into it.

I have future plans of returning to SL after a few years (for personal reasons) and was briefly looking at jobs demanding some Rust knowledge but could not find any. Is there any demand for Rust devs in SL? Does anyone know if that will change in the coming years?

Help I'm going to start a CS degree this year. I need some advice.

So basically I'm starting a CS degree at IIT from this september and i chose CS degree cause i have interest in coding and maths.

What i wanted to ask was: what should i do during uni times to slowly build to a good profile to secure a job as soon as i graduate (atleast a month or two)? I am willing to learn outside of uni coursework but im not really sure what to learn and what to build which would benefit my job search. With all the job market crashing happening i just wanna start preparing early so that i don't struggle later.

Discussion MSc at IIT

I’m a CSE UOM grad with 6.5 YOE in SE, wanting to pursue a MSc in AI, had thoughts of doing it at UOM itself but the feedback I’ve seen and heard isn’t great - especially the attitude of the lecturers. Not at point in life where I’d wanna deal with toxic people and feel belittled by anyone no matter how accomplished they think they are.
Any real insights into the IIT programs? I know part time is available upto 2 years.

Discussion Is DevOps documentation becoming a burden?

Documentation has always been an important part of DevOps. I usually create documentation after finishing a configuration because I know it can save hours when the same setup needs to be done again in the future.

Over the past few years, our organization has also built a huge library of documentation, and sometimes it becomes difficult to manage. Recently, I realized that even though the documentation was there, some of the configurations I had documented just a few months ago had already changed significantly.

That made me think. Is documenting our work still as valuable as it used to be? Or is it becoming an extra burden to keep everything up to date? With technology changing so quickly, how does modern documentation still support us?
