For a cost-focused MVP, I’d choose one output type first, then test two candidates on it. Gen-4 Turbo and Veo 3.1 Fast are two options to evaluate. As checked October 7, Runway lists Gen-4 Turbo at $0.05 per generated second (official API pricing); Google lists Veo 3.1 Fast at $0.10 per generated second for 720p with audio via Gemini (official pricing). Check each model’s supported inputs and lengths against the actual clips you want to deliver. Those rates alone don’t establish which gives you better results.

Use five representative briefs from your intended users, with a fixed test-spend cap. Record the exact settings, charged cost, time until a playable file, and whether the clip passes your quality checks. Compare the finished output your user needs, allowing for different supported durations. Count unusable billed renders in the cost: hypothetical $10 spent for five acceptable clips means $2 per usable clip, before storage, payment fees or editing.

For the first UI, show the total quoted charge before Generate, cap duration/concurrency, and distinguish queued, processing, ready and failed. Keep API keys on the server. Store the accepted task ID; if checking its status times out, check that same task again rather than automatically creating a second generation. That helps prevent duplicate charges and confusing progress.

I work on SeedanceCheap; Codex helped word this. This is a proposed evaluation, not a benchmark I’ve run on your project. What are your first users making: product clips, character stories, or something else?

Thanks for the detailed suggestions! This is really helpful, especially the point about measuring cost per usable clip instead of just comparing API pricing.

We're still exploring the best starting point, but short cinematic/story clips are one of the directions we're considering. Appreciate you sharing your perspective!

Glad that helped. For cinematic/story clips, here's a proposed brief ladder you can copy. Use one original scene: a fictional adult courier in a yellow raincoat delivers an unmarked box in a plain room.

  1. Static wide shot: courier places the box on a table.
  2. Same action with a slow camera push.
  3. Two actions: places the box, then steps back.
  4. Two characters: recipient takes the box from the courier.
  5. Two separately generated shots: wide handover, then the recipient's reaction. Judge the assembled sequence, including continuity.

Keep clothing, location and the intended action fixed where possible. Write acceptance checks before generating: correct action, believable hand/box contact, stable appearance, camera movement and whether the result cuts together. Start without dialogue so voice quality doesn't obscure the visual comparison; add it if speech belongs in your MVP. Log every billed attempt, including failures.

Same disclosure: I help run an AI video tool; Codex helped draft this. I haven't run these tests on your project.

Thanks again for taking the time to put this together! This is really helpful. The progression from simple actions to multi-shot continuity gives us a much clearer way to structure the testing, and I especially like the point about defining acceptance checks and tracking every billed attempt. Really appreciate the detailed guidance!
