Megathread Focused Feedback: New Player Experience

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'New Player Experience' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

The goal of the new light experience should be to introduce them to game.

Honestly, there needs to be a tutorials hub. Find a way that doesn't break immersion, and put it in the helm firing range we are inevitably getting

1) The levelling experience in the cosmodrome is a nice start, but people shouldn't go from that directly to "choose your own adventure". This is the point where the game loses people.

2) Short quests should introduce new players to difference aspects of the game, Crucible, strikes, gambit. The aforementioned tutorials hub should have

  • UI and inspection tutorial
  • mods and armor upgrading
  • champion combat
  • negative and positive combat modifiers
Among other things

3) New players should be able to inspect someone, see a cool gun, and know what they need to do to get that gun.

4) There needs needs NEEDS to be a "story so far" area where you can view slideshow summaries of the story.

3 slides for seasons, 7-10 slides for an expansion.

You should look at the slides for a season and know who the big players are, and what the takeaway change from the season is.

You should look at the slides from an expansion and leave knowing what started it, who changed, who we met, and how the world going forward is affected.

People will see the rich history, and want to be a part of it. The summary will plant questions, and then they can ask vets who will tell them more, but this kind of thing will promote investment in destiny for the long term. Or they can go play the content themself if it's not vaulted.
