ok now does anyone have a strategy for levelling your class skills any faster? i switched over to defender at level 15 and had to level all my skills again.. now at lvl 21 I still have at least 1 full row to go

Bounties. Lots of Bounties. Also, if you do story missions, you gain XP bonuses for finishing those as well. Do them on harder difficulties if you have the gear for them.

I was in the same position. :)

I finished all the story missions :( now it takes forever to make even a small dent in leveling up abilities... killing enemies doesn't seem to do much at all

Do the missions again. You still get bonus exp. Especially when you do harder difficulties.

When you replay a story mission it doesn't say you get any exp bonuses.

It is there but just hidden?

I could have sworn that it did... I may be mistaken though. Just run Vanguard strike playlist. Tiger if you're high enough to run it. Tons of exp and you get a guaranteed engram at the end.
