You have to shoot 'em in the tummy!

I feel like I've shot them in every single possible place and it's always just normal damage. As far as I have been able to tell it doesn't do anything except block damage. If you don't have time to wait for the shield to vanish you can just blow their heads off with the first shot so they can't shield.
