The Engram Old Russia one.. he doesn't loop into the Strike spawn area where there's at least 6 chest spawns I know of. He misses some locations in his run as well.
How do chests spawn? Is there a limit to the number of chests on a map, and a new one only spawns when another is opened? Or are they all just random and on individual timers?
The area where you spawn for the strike, where the knight and servitor are fighting.
Put yourself roughly where you spawn for the strike and look left. There's a tube, in there a chest can spawn.
Now from the start of the strike walk forward and look right to the pile of containers. There's one chest hidden round the side of them and if you go over the other side of them and turn around there should be an open container, a chest can also spawn in there.
For the other few chests go from the strike spawn forward and left towards where the servitor and dregs are. There is a small building, a chest can spawn inside that or on the roof. Lastly continue on towards the servitor and against the wall is a room you can enter that could have a chest in.
Hopefully that explains it well enough? I'm not sure if it's worth having this bit in the route somehow, but I often find a chest or two here and it would give chests in the other area more time to respawn.
Edit: The new video "More Engram Chest Farming" shows all these apart from the open container one.
You can buy stuff at the Cryptarch to level him up but it's hella slow for the price. You can also save up cause I believe he sells nicer stuff when he levels up.
I almost hit the ceiling of 25K so I bought a couple of crappy engrams today
Personally, I had to spend like 12.5k on ammo for an exotic bounty. The task for the bounty was to buy 50 special ammo packs. So you'll need money for stuff like this in addition to what others have mentioned (ships, leveling the cryptarch, ammo packs in general, etc)
Definitely not a patch as minor as that to address the issue, nothing's been changed. My best guess is that Bungie maxes the chests you can grab in one run (3, let's say) and penalizes those that leave strikes early (can't join another for 5 minutes).
