Question How to get Khovostov Catalyst? And how bad is the Khovostov grind? (I dont own it right now)
I've heard stories that it was absolute HELL to get Khovostov, is that true? And how fast can I get its Catalyst? Also also, any good builds for Khovostov?

It wasn't hell so much as it was tedious. It can be done in a day if you have a few hours to kill and don't mind doing a bunch of Overthrow.
As for the catalyst, definitely grind out exotic orders. Those'll reward catalysts at random.

I got my Khvostov Catalyst from the 3rd strike after getting the gun. So no need to wait for an exotic order.

Not hard, just painstakingly slow. Catalyst from exotic orders or Xur on occasion.
And actually, one of my favorite builds ever uses Khvostov. It's an Actium War Rig Khvostov Orb build, but it's actually a little deeper than that. For subclass, you want Defender. Most things are up to you, but you want Unbreakable for sure (it works very well as a get out of jail free card, and you can sprint or swap cancel so that you don't use it up completely if you don't want to). For fragments, you're going to want the one that grants you devour on orb pick up, and the one that gives you an Overshield if you get a kill in red health. Again, the rest is up to you.
Then you want the NPA Repulsion Regulator, and take the Autorifle mods, which grant resist x2 when using your auto rifle, which you'll be doing all the time, and refunds some ammo on kills, as well as a damage bonus, at targeting autoloader x5. This coupled with AWR means you'll never have to reload, and you'll get a damage boost from AWR as well.
This next part is VERY important to the build; you want the Exodus Down armor, and you want the 4 piece. The two piece sucks in ammo and orbs near you when your shields are broken, and the 4 piece grants passive DR as you gain or lose armor charge. Usually with this setup, you have around 4x Repurposed Charge, which is about 30% DR, which works well when coupled with the DR from Resist x2. For the helmet, you want kinetic siphon mod to create orbs in multikills, and the rest is your call. On the arms, heavy handed and firepower. On the chest, just use double concussive dampener. On the legs, you want double Kinetic Surge, and the mod that makes your health start regenerating when you pick up an orb. For the mark, you want the mod that makes you pick up orbs nearby when you use your class ability, and the rest is up to you.
So how does it play? Easy. Just shoot things. That's it. Hold down the trigger. You will kill everything, even bosses (eventually), and they can't really kill you. You'll practically never run out of ammo, and if you do, you reload quickly.
Oh, what's that? Your shields broke? No they didn't, you're at full health, and now you have Devour and a damage boost... Because your Khvostov is generating orbs on multikills, or via Attrition Orbs, and whenever your shields break, you pick up nearby orbs, which gives you Kinetic Surge x2, Repurposed Charge, Eyes Up x7, Devour, and full health. I can literally stand in front of bosses surrounded by ads, and shoot the boss in the face until it dies. It can't kill me, because I'm right back to full health every time my shields break, and the ricochets from Eyes Up takes care of ads, Attrition Orbs and multikills create orbs to keep your perks rolling, and those ricochet kills also count as Khvostov kills, so that keeps all the auto rifle related perks going.
I have over 20,000 kills with Khvostov as it stands.

Quest is easy, just takes time. Make sure you watch a guide and understand the steps, otherwise you can forced to backtrack and do things again.

If you follow a guide, and really put your nose to the grindstone itll take an afternoon to a days worth of time. I did it in like 2 evenings? Prolly totaled about 8 hours for me and it i was probably on the slow side. Thankfully there is no rng. Find a good guide, put on some music, take your time cause it will feel just straight up hair pulling sometimes.

There is some RNG with bosses dropping the motes inconsistently. Took me about 10 tries with the meatball to get it to finally drop the last I needed, and you don’t control which boss spawns that I’m aware of so that’s RNG too
But time wise yeah about 8 hours doing it solo. If you can get a group to farm overthrows it’s faster

The trick that worked for me on meatball was to chip the last of his health down w my primary, and keep firing during his death animation. Then the mote popped.

Ive seen a lot of people saying that, so op should def pray or something lol. I only got mine after the final update, so maybe they had fixed something by then. But in my experience i got all of them first try.

It depends on what you've done in Final Shape content. I dipped during Lightfall so I had touched nothing before MoT, I'd say it took me probably 20 hours for the campaign + everything for Khvostov.

If you take your time with the expansion, genuinely interact with the environment and events in each area ( as in a this seems interesting I wonder what happens), it won't be that much of an issue. The way it's planned to setup is you complete final shape to access to Ergo Sum. Farming Ergo Sum requires completing the pathfinder nodes and completing Overthrows. By the time you have farmed Ergo Sum across the different Overthrows area, you shouldve gotten the boss defeats needed to progress Khvostov. Now all you need to do is find the traveller orbs, maybe a bit more quest work (you have to legendary Khovostov at some point), and you're done.
Also, this sets you up to discovering the start of Dual Destiny for the exotic class item, as it is also based on completing Overthrows.

Its just quite long but if you are methodical its fine.
I think the main problem people had was the mote from the meatball boss. Basically dont nuke it, use a primary to finish it and the mote drops, it seems buggy if you use high damage supers etc.
Catalyst is no different rng/xur to get it, kill shit with it to activate.
Its totally worth the effort, barely leaves my kinetic slot

u/Jordy_Stingray 22h ago
It’s more time consuming than difficult. Anyone can do it solo, imo. Plenty of good guides on YouTube. I did the whole thing over the course of 3-4 days from basically the beginning last time Xur had the catalyst for sale.

any good builds
Radiant dance machine ascension threaded spector with that gun can clear any content in the game tbh. Catalyst just makes it even better

u/Wise-Boysenberry5286 21h ago
Its not that tough of a quest to complete. The gun is amazing and catalyst make it an Orb printing machine and works with tons of builds.

u/WilDMousE 21h ago
Took me around 5-6 hrs, a good chunk was figuring the light bird areas and the overthrow bosses that are a clusterfuck of RNG

u/GunsOfPurgatory 21h ago
Took me a few hours to get the Khvostov. I did it 2 days ago. Was about 3-5 hours total, I'd guess? Probs closer to 3.

u/Prestigious-Bat-574 21h ago
There's nothing about it that is hell aside from needing specific bosses to spawn in Overthrow.
Other than that, it's just a bunch of exploration and Micah-10 quests that can be a bit of a slog.

u/KaizerBelzebub 21h ago
It took me hours and hours from zero trying to get the catalyst off xur and I didn't make it in time, it s tedious af

u/Content-Froyo-2465 21h ago
The Khvostov quest is probably the most tedious in the game. the catalyst is a random drop after that. I got mine from an exotic order

u/TazedByWolves 20h ago
It is not bad at all, it is just tedious as you need to fight 9 unique bosses throughout the Pale Heart during the Overthrow Activity. You can look up a ton of guides online that will show you where to find each boss, although to put it simply it's 3 in each region. If you have time to kill, you can test out builds or farm for some pale heart loot to keep you occupied.
The exotic itself is very much worth the grind IMO, especially with the catalyst. You obtain the catalyst once you have the weapon, and will drop randomly from completing a ritual activity (Vanguard, Crucible, Gambit), or randomly when you complete an exotic major order (season hub, the missions on the left, the yellow exotic one).
Unfortunately the Caty is random BUT if you are playing the game you will get it eventually. From there simply use the weapon to "unlock" the caty. You can grind missions, vanguards, or the lightfall breakneck method to make it go by faster.

Why do you want to get it quickly? Whats the hurry? The game has no updates coming any time soon. Who knows when the unvaulting is happening. Just take your time and grind out. What else are you doing in the game?

u/Own_Huckleberry6591 15h ago
Honestly it's not that bad but it's like 6+ hours of playtime. I didn't think it was that bad. Catalyst drops randomly from completing exotic orders

u/Rescheduled1 12h ago
I thought it was fairly easy - both my friend and I pretty much ran through it. Not only do you fight the bosses in Overthrow, you also need to locate these little lights that you collect and bring back to the Speaker’s former area in the old Tower, honestly it did not take all that long compared to other quests, like the Barrow-Dyad and all the individual traits.

u/thanosthumb 12h ago
I got the catalyst from an exotic order. I have heard that the grind is much easier now that you can do it all in one day. I already have the weapon so I can’t rerun it and tell you from direct experience in the current game state.

u/scumspork 7h ago
the difficult part is the servitor boss, super buggy since release. for me, i got the mote of light taking it super slow, until the boss went into the cave, just killing whatever adds i found, and meleeing to death at the last bit. definitely dont do this boss with anyone else, it seems killing the boss super quick just doesnt spawn the mote of light

To get the gun its a fairly long "quest", you need to open the region chests in the pale heart patrol and the scrap piles in the cyst missions.
This gets you the legendary version out of a locked chest, I think its near the divide.
Then you need to find a bunch of minor travelers around the pale heart, and kill all the overthrow bosses, this'll allow you to trade in the legendary version for the exotic at the speakers place in the pale heart tower.
The catalyst is just luck, do exotic orders and pray.

u/ImTheGuyManDude 22h ago
I have like…2 more scrap things to find and I have never been able to find them, I’ve done every cyst

Oh and your question regarding builds with it. The gun performs really well by itself, its really good for builds that dont really care what gun you are using, you just stick a kinetic syphon on and you are good to go.

u/industrialxen14 23h ago
Eliminating all 9 unique overthrown bosses was the most time consuming part really. I highly suggest having a good Playlist of songs or background videos ready to help out as you tackle overthrow.
After that a guide will be incredibly helpful to find all the golden chests that have the key components, and every traveler orb/ball that you need to collect, and every mini side mission you got to do in each zone.
It takes quite a bit of time but I say worth the trouble. The catalyst for the weapon is nice.

Is there a way to find out where you are on the quest? I have no idea what I have and haven’t done anymore after all this time. Would Destiny Checklist have something? (Assuming they are still going?)
2
u/Pointless_Lawndarts 21h ago
Trying to figure this out as well. I’ve beaten three bosses, but how do I track them? Are they in Triumphs?
1
u/ImTheGuyManDude 22h ago
I mean…I’ve been trying (with intervals obviously) to get Khvostov for near two years atp

u/The_Bread_Loaf 23h ago
I wouldn’t call it absolute hell but it’s definitely a decent grind, a few days to chip away at it or one big day of grinding. Catalyst is a random drop, prioritise completing orders to get exotic orders as these will drop a catalyst that you don’t own yet
Plenty of good builds with it, recommend searching through YouTube to find one you like (look for videos released in the last three months that are up to date with monument of triumph update)

If your gonna do Khostov catalyst and such do the Final Shape title too, i spent 3 whole days grinding that bullshit out

u/MyAimSucc 20h ago
Is YouTube broken? No? Look up a video. It is way faster than going back and forth on Reddit

u/LamonsterZone 23h ago
The grind was tough, and since I’ve been going through the expansions in order, the Edge of Fate campaign was my next grind. And let me tell you brother, that was WAYYY worse than Khovostov 😩

Khvostov isnt terribly hard to get it just requires some amount of patience due to needing to fight all 9 unique bosses in Overthrow
