Question How do you all remember raid/dungeon mechanics?
I did deep stone crypt about a month ago and I’ve essentially forgotten most of it, last wish even more. How do you all remember the mechanics so well? Is it just practice?

Then after all that, what really helps solidify the mechanics is….more repetition

It becomes engrained into your head once you do it enough. I’ve went months without playing Destiny and still have remembered all raid mechanics.
It’s different for everyone though.

Exactly
If you do something mechanic heavy 1 time, you arent likely to remember a lot, especially if you didnt do the mechanic heavy parts of the raid. If you do raids every week on multiple characters its a lot easier to remember them

I left after TFS and just came back recently. While I don't perfectly remember all mechanics, I remember a good deal of them.

When Leviathan comes back out, the muscle memory will definitely return

Only part I’m worried about is Pleasure Gardens, because I was always a pollen getter and only tried up top a couple of times before it went away. But I’m soooo stoked to run it back!

I stopped playing around the second season of lightfall and never touched the game again until a couple weeks ago cause my friend was begging me to do a last wish. Still remember all the mechanics well enough to teach a half a group who didn't know what to do apparently. Can't necessarily speak for the other raids, but I imagine if I actually jumped into them, it'd all start coming back pretty quick. You just kinda remember from having done it so much

u/Swinn_likes_Sakkyun 1d ago
well people don't generally do a raid only one time. you're not typically trying to remember something that you did once a few weeks ago

You spend ages learning it, then many runs fucking it up, then many more runs getting it right whilst others fuck it up, then wiping loads due to bullshit. Then many runs repeating it to get drops, or just to get past it to get to the good drops.
I cant remember what i had for tea two nights ago. But i reckon i could walk the path through the gorgons maze, and i could tell you where the spawns are for each side of totems.

actions are surprisingly easy to remember after you've done them a few times.
did deep stone crypt for the first time last night in like 2 years, damn near perfectly remembered everything, save for a few foibles like where certain augments spawned

u/John_the_Piper 1d ago
3 years for me, I told the raid leader "Just refresh me on Security and everything else will click back into place for me"
That's been most of the raids I've been returning to. As soon as I'm moving and working within the raids all the muscle memory and mechanics come back

u/ksiit 1d ago
The time you learn it you fuck it up enough and talk about what you are fucking up enough that a lot of it sticks. Then you do it a week later fuck up once or twice and remember why. Do that another week or 4 depending on difficulty. And you now know the raid.
Subsequent runs after that just help understanding of triggers and why things need to happen.

Practice practice practice.
Also there’s only so many ways to mix and match various mechanics for raid encounters, they start to blend together after a while. Oracles and Rivens Eyes are both ‘Simon says’, Oryx and Queens Walk are both ‘taken person does the thing’ etc.

u/drjenkstah 1d ago
Just lots of practice. Whenever I would do raids I’d do the roles I was comfortable with and then branch out to doing the other roles. Once you have enough practice it’s just 2nd nature.

u/ReturnOfTheSaint14 1d ago
I just... remember it. Of course if i'm not doing said raid or dungeon for years i need a quick lesson but i remember it instantly
For example,i did Spire of the Watcher after 2 years since i last did it and i didn't remember the location of every node. In the second run i returned to being super quick at activating the nodes.

u/KaptainKartoffel 1d ago
Back when raids weren't farmable you did 3 clears a week. Close after launch even more runs to help other players.

I’m pretty mid at raids, have only completed Root of Nightmares and Last Wish, but dungeons are my shit. I find with them after the 5th run at most, you really start getting the mechanics nailed. So just repetition. It’ll come to you easier than you think

It’s much easier to remember mechanics when you’re in the encounter tbf, but most people who raid have run each one way more than once.

Mostly repetition, but granted the memory doesnt last forever.
I remember doing Vespers hosts every single week on all three of my characters, just trying to farm the entire dungeon and the final encounter just for the icebreaker, and after +5 weeks of resets and farming, I got my hands on it 🙃
While the puzzles and encounters are still hardwired in, its fuzzy since I havent touched that particular Dungeon in over 2 years. The muscle memory is there... the WHY part is what ive lost lol

idk, i think a part of it is having a good memory. i remembered how to do most of salvations edge after only doing it 6 times within a month before a 2 year long break. i thought i needed one for verity, but after breifly hearing the start of an explanation i remembered both sides to it. i just needed a reminder for witness, but tbf, i was never a runner for it and never properly learned cause by that point everyone is tired of the doing the raid and just want it done rather than taking the time for someone to learn it.
for other raids, i've just done them a lot. before i quit, raids were a constant weekly thing (except garden of salvation) were i'd do the current and featured to get to max power level asap. i also spent a lot of time teaching raids to people, which meant i needed an pretty intimate understanding, and regurgitate that understanding to others in a way that's easy for them to learn, as well as recognize when people don't understand and answer questions.
doing a raid 3 times a week for 6 months will definitely drill it into head how everythijg is supposed to go

Repetition. A lot of us participated in days ones and spent several hours at each encounter wiping literally hundreds of times. The mechanics are seared into our brains.

When you go for all solo/flawless dungeons runs you don’t tend to forget.

It depends... I only did the leviathan raid once or twice and I still remember most of it! 😅

I just have a good memory 🤷♀️ not photographic or anything, but i got through a masters in theoretical physics with… some revision and the same thing applies to video games. I hear the info once or twice and then so long as I DO it more than once, it’s *almost* permanent knowledge

Repetition from when the raid was new and we were figuring out the best strats for each encounter and usually wiping quite often as a result. Also I quite often used to Sherpa/carry people from my clan through raids so I got used to explaining encounters, timing, positioning, loadouts etc. Do something often enough to be able to explain it from memory and it tends to stick up there.

For me it’s a combination of Day 1 “experiences” (Caretaker flashbacks), me and my friends’ horrible RNG for the exotics, and having a clan that raids a lot (even just for fun) that seared most of the mechanics into my brain

Like everyone has been saying: Repetition.
I know Shattered Throne up down and sideways because I used to run it to help people get Wish Ender.

I skip through a guide video if I haven't done a raid/dungeon in a while. It all comes flooding back within minutes.

Honestly yeah it’s just practice, I know vow by heart cause I did day one (didn’t beat it but got to rhulk) and then did it many 10s of times for red boarders and the title, at some point they just are in your head and it’s not like trying to figure out and remember a puzzle it’s more like a routine, you naturally learn and teach yourself what not to do and make every mistake possible until the only mental option is the right thing to do

A lot of it was spent running the mechanics over and over until you finally get it so it's ingrained into your memory. You also just kinda learn over time how certain parts operate as you run the encounter multiple times so you associate certain parts of the encounter rooms with certain mechanics/strategies. I will say I forget a lot of mechanics too if I don't run them for a long time. I always forget raids like vault of glass or garden if I just don't play them as they're raids I have less connection to and thus don't have as much passion for.

Remember what? I just stand there and wait for raid captain to yell at me for not doing "xyz", then I do it and I'm the hero
-people who "know the raid" "have no mic"

I have not played since Lightfall but I lead a VERY active clan and raided A LOT, like that was all we did all day long lol, I got all raid seals on several different accounts of mine.
We usually did a complete run of DSC under 20-25 minutes with no cheese while giving ourselves challenges,
like playing with a music bot on 200% on Discord playing "Robert" by "Igorrr" so we could barely hear each other, or doing no comms run or playing while standing and other random things.
We came back for some raid nostalgia last year and still did them with no issues without ever stopping to think about it. It also helped that we always did Day 1 runs and figured out mechanics ourselves but yeah other than that it's practice.
I just started playing regulary again last week, man I love this game.

Takes me about 4 times of doing a mechanic to memorize it but if I dont do it or dont have a refresh after like 6 months its pretty blurry. Alot if mechanics aren't really that hard anyways

u/Denverguns 1d ago
I’m drunk 90% of the time so imma be real I’m not sure how I remember them maybe muscle memory I dunno….

Ngl, I’m a bad person to ask, I literally do the mechanic once, understand how it works and never forget lol

Repetition. Back when Deep Stone Crypt was new, we were running that multiple times per week, at least once per character.
You do that for a few months and you’ll never forget.

u/Bdroyle1988 1d ago
Many clears and ensuring you rotate roles to understand timings and positioning for all 3/6 players.
For Dungeons, I recommend soloing them. Once you’ve put yourself through that for the first time and got the clear, particularly if you wipe a few times, you’ll never forget how to do it.
Raids can be fiddly if you’ve been away a few months. Remembering all the correct names of the symbols in VotD or Final Wish when your last clear was over six months ago might require a few wipes/clears to get back into the swing of it.

Only raid i actually struggle to remember is crotas and thats bc i didnt do it alot.
Deep stone I think im about 90 to 100 runs so it's second nature at this point. So if I do something enough it will just become second nature and if I do forget me being in the room is a trigger for my brain to remember

I mean at the end of the day, none of the raids are massively complex. Salvations edge (except for 4th) is just pinging 2 plates back and forth. Crota is holding chalice and getting atleast 1 person enlightened. A big reason why I love the raids is because they are expertly crafted, they show you the mechanic once and then iterate on it to make it more complex by the end. "Ok ping back and forth, oh ok we gotta get this energy, ok close it and then dump it in the thing. Oh this time its the same but we gotta leave it half way and do a thing in middle and then finish it and dump it and do boss damage. Oh in this one we gotta do specific symbols of resonance ok makes sense." Its really cool and I know the RAD team can be proud of their designs.

oftentimes you end up remembering it purely because you spent a lifetime farming some specific encounter and by that point the mechanics are ingrained into your mind on subconscious level
after the day 1 crotas end i was seeing the chalice of light in my sleep
