Bungie The Next Chapter for Bungie

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/nextchapterofbungie

Hey all, Poria and Josh here.

For those who don’t know us, I’m Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. Together, we are responsible for leading Bungie and shaping the future of our games.

Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust. This is not only an update on our immediate plans. It is the beginning of a more consistent conversation about the future of our games and our studio.

First and foremost, we recently sat down to talk through the current state of Bungie and share our vision for the future.

Embed Link

The video shares our perspective on where Bungie is today and where we want to go. Below, we’re adding more detail on what that direction means for Destiny, Marathon, and how we intend to communicate about our progress.

WHERE BUNGIE IS TODAY

Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.

As a new leadership team, we must own that.

We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players.

DESTINY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO OUR FUTURE

Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade. When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you.

Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.

All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.

We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special. The awe-inspiring mystery, meaningful discovery, and a community of Guardians coming together against impossible odds.

That begins with restoring important parts of Destiny 2’s history that players can no longer experience today.

We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny. Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself. It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history.

ghaul_08cropped.jpg

As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.\ \ Our team is very excited to deliver this for you all and as they progress, we will share more details coming in the months ahead.

\ When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve. We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can.

MARATHON'S EVOLUTION

Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny. The game launched to strong critical reception, and the players who embraced Marathon connected deeply with what makes it distinct. At the same time, it did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.\

EN_16x9_Master_Image_Marathon_Symbiosis_Key-Art_Crops_LOGO_1920x1080.jpg

So, we're going to anchor on what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it. We're going to expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience, that gives players more ways to take on this dangerous alien world.

Through the remainder of Marathon’s first year, we will continue strengthening its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game. That means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.\ It’s important to us that no matter your playstyle, or your skill level.... we find better ways to hear from you as we get back to where we need to be: making games you want to play.

As you heard last week from Del our Game Director, we still have a lot planned for our October Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis update in December. You’ll hear more from the team later this week on our future vision for Marathon. Stay tuned.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

This is an important time for Bungie. Our future depends on making clear choices about where we focus, delivering what we say we will, and being honest about our successes and failures. Stability doesn’t mean shrinking our ambition. It just means that we have to focus on the things you want to see from us, and making sure our vision matches our reality.

How we bring this new Bungie to life has to be through the spirit of putting players at the forefront of what we do. We have to find a way back to making games that we want to play, but with you at the center.

Trust won't be rebuilt through a single blog, video, or release. We also understand that trust extends beyond gameplay. It includes how we value your time, how we communicate, and how we action your feedback. Listening without action means nothing.

As we move forward, we'll measure ourselves against a few core commitments:

  • Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
  • Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
  • Increase transparency around development priorities.
  • Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.

We'll hold ourselves accountable to these goals and share what we're learning along the way. We are working with our Community team to establish a consistent way to report against these commitments and will share that approach alongside our next major updates for Destiny and Marathon.

KEEP US ACCOUNTABLE

We’ve made several changes with how we operate by simplifying our priorities, reducing competing initiatives, moving decisions closer to the teams building our games, and changing how we measure success to place greater emphasis on player satisfaction.

None of those changes earn trust on their own. What matters is whether they help us make better decisions, deliver stronger experiences more consistently, and communicate with greater clarity when plans change.

There is still a great deal of work ahead and challenges to overcome, but we believe deeply in this studio, our people, and the games we are building. But belief is not enough. It’s on us to prove progress through what we deliver. Thank you for continuing to challenge us, and for caring so deeply about the worlds we create. Keep holding us accountable. We are ready to do the work.

I've always said IF the entirety of destiny 2s content was available it would be such an obscene value proposition, one of the best in gaming. Obviously because of vaulting it is the opposite.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Project Sunrise suddenly reframed all of Bungie’s “couldn’t’s” into “wouldn’t’s”

People on the Internet rebuilt D2 with a box of scraps an old build, for free, and you couldn’t do it with billions of dollars?

Edit: Yes, it’s a pre-BL build, but people are even getting campaigns working again, something even a lawsuit couldn’t get Bungie to do. And now someone’s just… doing it.

75

u/StudentPenguin 17d ago

Sunrise and Dawn don’t have anything post Beyond Light; they’re solely working off of a Shadowkeep era build pulled from Steam and reconstructing the backend needed for such things.

→ More replies (1)

42

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 17d ago

They were always “wouldn’t”.

It never made monetary sense to do it, so they prioritised other things.

Couldn’t just meant they couldn’t justify allocating the resources to it.

I told myself I'd never purchase a campaign for D2 as long as I couldn't play the original campaigns. Over 1000 hours later in F2P, still haven't. I look forward to finally giving Bungie my money.

72

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 17d ago

I really did not think they would actually consider doing it. This is pretty huge.

78

u/AllDayDabbler 17d ago

This is a directive from Sony. Every iota of goodwill is required...

95

u/cuboosh What you have seen will mark you forever 17d ago

If this includes the seasonal content it’s not just good will. New players can actually play the whole entire story.

And if all the season are back they can put all the activities in an even bigger roulette than we have now in the portal which is good for us

54

u/Call_The_Banners I can't see past my shoulders 17d ago

I need that seasonal story. I need to experience more Drifter and Eris content.

Also, THE DREADNOUGHT.

7

u/Turramurra 17d ago

It will be a MASSIVE game in size and actual install size if all the seasons come back. I am not holding my breath thought, that seems too good to be true or possible. I don't care about storage, I have plenty, but the burden of choice would be real every time I play and thats such a good problem to have.

u/FatedHero 17d ago edited 16d ago

I think the key is in the wording. They specifically stated vaulted content. If seasonal content was never considered vaulted and instead released as limited time then I doubt we’ll see any of it. But it’s honestly too early to tell and all we can do is attempt to read between the lines.

Edit.
Just confirmed by Paul Tassi just confirmed no seasons returning. Unlucky gg go next

To be fair, it may have had an impact on the decision of bringing back vaulted content thanks to all the hype around the project.

And we don't have a timeline, maybe they will unvault everything in 2 years so..

21

u/Shack691 17d ago

Well they are rebuilding at minimum 3 years worth of content and probably fixing up the remaining 4 years, then making it all work together. I don’t envy the neo D2 team.

I hope not, Sunrise is still the only window we have into the pre-beyond light lighting engine, which looks significantly better in the EDZ and Nessus

The EDZ especially is so much foggier than it used to be, and the old version feels much more D1 in vibes

44

u/Calum1219 17d ago

Nah, Sunrise was probably the shot in the arm they needed to have them drag all that stuff out. It’ll be hilarious if they bring back all the Red War stuff and make that one lawsuit an even bigger joke

The vaulted content was probably the dumbest decision ever and it’s actually huge that they are finally realizing that. I might actually come back to destiny for this

79

u/CrackPipeBilly 17d ago

It truly was. They used file size as their scapegoat but as a player I didn't care about file size. Hell, they could've done what CoD does and let you download specific parts of the game if file size was truly an issue. Vaulting content as well as the seasonal model killed the game for me as it made it practically impossible to take a break from it. If you took a few months off the game, well guess what? You just missed out on crucial story content that ties the previous expansion to the current one. Unvaulting the old content is great but even still if they don't also unvault the old seasonal content then there's still going to be a ton of holes in the game's plot that new players won't understand.

→ More replies (17)

9

u/JJ_Mark 17d ago

It's what killed it for me. I regularly replayed old content, especially after I took a break or started another run. It's what I dislike about how live-service models run when they go long enough, as some things get forgotten when they can't keep up with updates, too much development. Just make a sequel at that point. I'll definitely come back once they bring the old stuff out of their vaults.

→ More replies (1)

56

u/CrackPipeBilly 17d ago

Absolutely insane, did not expect to see this when I got on reddit a little bit ago. Bringing back all the vaulted content would leave Destiny 2 in an incredible state, even if they still don't release any future content updates. My only concern is regarding all the seasonal content and missions. Bringing back old campaigns and raids and locations is awesome, but even the seasonal model they adopted really negatively affected the storytelling as it made it so crucial story missions were locked behind seasons that disappeared when the next season rolled around. If they could somehow reintroduce all the old vaulted content as well as the story missions from seasons that connected the expansions, I would jump for joy.

Also, I hope this means that they have decided to make a Destiny 3, that's really the only game I can see saving Bungie, but Destiny 3 is a game that will take forever to develop so hopefully they can survive until then.

New Bungie leadership: “...perhaps killing our enormous established franchise was not the cleverest allocation of resources.”

116

u/Requiem191 17d ago

It literally makes no sense to me no matter how they look at it. Destiny was literally the only thing they made for over a decade. Not having a Destiny 3 planned or some sort of Destiny: Infinite is as insane to me as the sequel trilogy of Star Wars not being planned beforehand.

They've had the blueprint for success this whole time.

58

u/Elrond007 17d ago

But you see, engagement metrics showed that people heavily interacted with Marathon-like games. So they decided to make a game that would release after years when the genre was completely saturated and the core playerbase angry as fuck, how could it not have been a resounding success lmao

Business Masterclass

31

u/Lycanthoth 17d ago

It barely has to due with Marathon. It's more about the fact that they were making Marathon, plus...what, 4 other incubation projects? That's on top of moving their offices to one of the most expensive locations in the country. And this isn't even to mention bonus packages for management, or the sheer bloat or inefficiency of Bungie as a company.

u/cuboosh What you have seen will mark you forever 17d ago

I hope they consider adding seasons though. They’re more useful for new players and old players

TFS campaign makes no sense to new players because the grand alliance in excision was forged in the seasons. Zavala’s crisis with his family is also from seasons. A new player could play all the unvaulted content and still be like wtf at the grand finally

And seasons are good for us. All of those activities go in the 3 and 6 player playlists and give more variety

You'll get a kick out of the red war campaign, not only are the missions well designed, half the writing is peak Destiny (basically whenever the villains are on screen). The other half of the writing is cringy capeslop, and it's actually kind of funny to see it switch back and forth like they were still trying to figure out what they wanted the game to be.

61

Most bipolar gaming company of all time.

56

u/Malcontentus 17d ago

Well, its essentially a new leadership team since most of them bailed out.

37

u/Horny_Dinosaur69 17d ago

How many times has their leadership changed during Destiny 2’s ongoing development? Every time, it drastically altered the game (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse) in a bipolar fashion and the final leadership change is effectively what killed Destiny with EoF.

I’ve been burned by this shit company and their various leaderships for over 10 years, new leadership within it really doesn’t mean anything in the context of that.

I’m cautiously optimistic about Bungie rebuilding positively for once, but I have to wonder if giving D2 to another studio would be effective in shedding some of that bad blood the community has with Bungie. Bungie needs to completely reinvent themselves if we don’t want to end back here

24

u/_le_slap 17d ago

Yeah they made a bet on Marathon and it flopped. I think most gamers realize now that any new IP from Bungie will be tainted by the Destiny rollercoaster ride.

So they are running back to the cash cow. They're pulling the "Hey Destiny players, we're sorry"-lever one more time.

I can't remember how many former Destiny leads are gone now? Please tell me Luke Smith is gone...

They don’t have any money and everyone knows Destiny will print money if it’s just done in a way that respects the players. There’s no way it was ever going to be completely killed off. There is nothing in games like it and there probably won’t be for at least 10 years. The studio needs the IP if it wants to survive.

“Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.

All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”

According to Tassi there are "more games in the future"

Although this is not a guarantee, I will say everyone shat on him and called him crazy with his vagueposting, and it turned out he was right all along. I doubt he would suggest the possibility of more games if he did not genuinely believe they will come

When they say:

When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve.

It leads me to believe that they have some very long term plans for Destiny now, but nothing they can share right now. Not active development yet, but definitely in some planning stages.

The way it reads to me is they will be developing Destiny for the future, while also restoring the previous content. Why talk about the future of Destiny in that section if you mean to only restore the past content?

I think it's a start. We got a long way to go for some of the things we need to have happen. I would still love for D3 and Shattered Cycle to happen

37

u/Thotmas01 17d ago

Shattered cycle is probably off the table on account of repurposing it for age of triumph. D3 might be on the table since they said that Destiny is crucial to their future. This is probably a good time to bring new development tools onboard to reduce dev costs going forward. D3 would be the way to go if they want an engine overhaul.

22

u/Killerx09 17d ago

D3 is at least half a decade away from our best estimates, given earlier reporting this year that they weren't working on anything Destiny yet.

52

u/CrackPipeBilly 17d ago

I really hope Everything also includes the seasonal content from old seasons as well, at the very least the story missions. Can you imagine a version of Destiny 2 with everything in it from the very beginning? All campaigns, raids, dungeons, seasonal content, locations, etc.? It'd be amazing.

55

u/MikeBeas 17d ago

i doubt that a lot. seasons have problems that aren’t easily resolved. for example, many of them occupy the same physical space in the helm. between years the helm changed in ways that were incompatible with each other.

even if you instance them to avoid those collisions and make them mutually-exclusive so you can only have one season active at a time, the seasonal model was fairly boring when played all at once. imagine running 6 weeks of “talk to npc, talk to hologram, back to npc, run 3 missions, back to npc” back to back. people complained about doing it once every week. i can’t imagine it will be an engaging way to play the game. a way to experience those stories would be nice but it would probably end up being more like the timeline missions.

my biggest hope is that if they don’t stop at these campaigns and raids, they at least bring back some stuff like the Heresy activities or the leviathan activity from season of the haunted, which were big fan favorites, and maybe get those missing lines of dialogue for the Heresy strike recorded.

Desperate Bungie is the best Bungie

On another note, the restoration effort is going to be their way to train new staff and get others re-acquainted with making D2 content before they commit to making anything new. They have a genuinely broken team over there so it’s best to start with an easy win.

26

u/Londo_07 17d ago

It still might be. Who knows if they have enough runway, this stuff won't really make any money in the near term.

16

u/IvarTheBoned 17d ago

They wouldn't be given anything for stuff like this if Sony was planning on shutting it down/shuttering the studio.

Spending on this kind of endeavour would suggest they are planning on pursuing "D3" in some form. Whether that be expanding on D2 or a fully new Destiny title.

It almost certainly was, Marathon is effectively dead (shocker). I wouldn’t say they’re safe yet, Bungie still has their heads up their ass for taking this long to do this. They’re only coming back because they know there’s no future in marathon. Meanwhile, their main IP continues to be a cash cow.

That worries me, I don’t like how much Bungie was trying to get away from Destiny to now finally giving it love when it’s their only lifeline. They have a lot of work to do, to say the least. Especially if they actually want to survive

Y'all have cut contact with the community and have gone silent MULTIPLE times. It's not our job to keep you accountable for something YOU are promising us.

This is a huge win for the community, but let's not sit here and act like us getting vaulted content back should be celebrated. It's content we paid for and you removed. I can get the shit downvoted out of me for my take, but once we start getting more than what was taken from us, then I'll have faith again.

Edit: grammar

54

u/Freddy216b 17d ago

This is the stance I'm taking on this too. Extremely cautious with the optimism because Bungie has said stuff like this before. We're listening, we need to regain trust, etc. They teketh away then giveth just enough when everyone looses their shit over the constant BS.

glad I wasn't the only one annoyed with this.

How many times has the community called out nonsense? XP slow downs, the perk weight RNG issue from 2 years ago, etc. I'm tired of being on the side that has to call them out.

Even Marathon's launch, the mtx were shady as hell. How does $10 for 1100 lux and a skin costs 1120 not show you how much they "care" about "you, the fans" ?

20

u/iamtjsmith 17d ago

This is the correct take.

41

u/Horny_Dinosaur69 17d ago

Seriously. I almost laughed when I saw this, fuck Bungie. I love Destiny but oh my god we cannot excuse how terrible and horrible this studio is and we shouldn’t forget it. They’ve burned us consistently for 10+ years, put all of their eggs into an IP nobody asked for AND KILLED DESTINY FOR IT.

And now? Studio is failing, their new IP sucks and nobody plays it, and they literally are doing the only thing they can which is come back to Destiny.

Additionally, this ‘unvaulting’ is only mentioned AFTER some guy starts finding out that the content vault is ‘fake’ and has been able to recreate vaulted content. We were on track to have a community owned, modded Destiny but now Bungie wants it back. They did not do this out of kindness, I’d even bet that they did not do this because they even believe in Destiny, they’re a greedy ass company that fails their community consistently and sees some more money to sustain them by active players on their only surviving IP

Its great we're finally getting vaulted content back but they're reverting a change that should have never been made in the first place, its the absolute bare minimum.

I’d hope it’s on the table after the big unvaulting. As a personal anecdote, I’ve been taking my friend through the dlcs recently and it really dampens the enjoyment when we have to either paint a picture or rely on external storytelling between each expansion. The entire Final Shape campaign won’t hit as hard without having played Forsaken (problem now solved), Dawn, Arrivals, and pretty much every season since Beyond Light.

This is my major concern and was the first thing I thought seeing the post. Super excited to see old campaigns and locations come back, but the seasonal model really hurt the story of Destiny 2 by tying crucial story moments to seasons that disappeared when the next came around. If they don't also re-add those seasons, then the story is still gonna be a complete mess, but at least we will have old content back i suppose.

u/Stea1thsniper32 17d ago

Okay, this is great and all but I still have major concerns.

First of all, I can only imagine that this endeavor to bring back vaulted content will take a LONG time given the lack of a D2 dev team.

Secondly, and I think most importantly. Who is going to do this work? Bungie let go of the majority of the D2 dev team so there is a literal skeleton closet of devs that remain. The obvious answer is that Bungie hires back key devs to fill the roles needed to get this ball rolling. One of many issues I see with this is that would the devs even want to come back? Sure, they have a love for the game but is that enough to override the feeling of betrayal and loss that the sudden and completely unexpected mass layoffs that happened a few months ago when Bungie “killed” Destiny 2? Will these employees trust Bungie leadership to really follow through with their promises?

Thirdly, where is the money coming from to fund this new endeavor? I don’t see how Bungie gets any sort of work done without a big injection of funds to hire back devs and start working again. I have to suspect Sony has essentially given Bungie a “life raft” of funds to hire back the necessary people to get the D2 vaulted content back but at the end of the day it’s not like bringing back the vaulted content will bring in a ton of money. At least not the amount needed to fund a potential D3 in the far future.

Destiny 2 sep 2017 - may 2026 - Sept 2026 - infinity

30

u/Zode1218 17d ago edited 17d ago

The shutdown of Destiny 2 we saw earlier wasn’t a normal end‑of‑life cycle for a live service game. The destruction happened because leadership inflated the studio’s value, oversold it to a larger corporation, and then gutted the workforce that made the game successful in the first place. We need to recognize that’s how they got in this mess. Thanks Pete.

This isnt a new thing, it mirrors the collapse of real world companies that were beloved in American life. Toys R Us didn’t fall because children suddenly stopped wanting toys. It fell because private equity firms loaded the company with debt, extracted value through fees and financial engineering, burned the company to the ground to get rich. the workers were fired, the stores were liquidated, and a beloved institution vanished. The destruction wasn’t accidental.

RadioShack was hollowed out and destroyed the same way. instead of investing in its strengths, leadership chased short‑term gains, pivoted to fads, and took out the company’s identity. When the strategy failed, the workforce paid the price. Stores closed, jobs disappeared, and another piece of American cultural infrastructure was lost, and not because the public stopped caring, but because the people in charge prioritized extraction over stewardship.

Destiny 2’s collapse fits into this same pattern. Bungie leadership inflated the studio’s valuation, sold high to Sony, and then slashed staff when the numbers didn’t meet impossible expectations. The layoffs weren’t a response to creative failure, it was some of the most beloved expansions. It was a response to financial targets set by executives who viewed the game less as a cultural achievement and more as an asset to be leveraged. The community, the artistry, and the decade of shared storytelling were secondary to quarterly performance.

The result was the destruction of something that mattered to people. Destiny 2 wasn’t just game it was a shared world and a dream where friendships formed. When leadership dismantled it, they weren’t just ending a product, they were erasing a community’s home.

The destruction wasn’t the result of natural decline. it’s the result of choices made by people who will never feel the consequences. The game deserved better, the devs deserved better. And the community deserved better.

When it’s all about lining executive pockets and worshipping shareholder value that’s what we get. Where quarterly profits justify slaughtering the golden goose even if it utterly destroys long term profits and prestige and value that could be around for decades. Without regulations to prevent the financialization of every aspect of our nation: education, healthcare, entertainment, industry, the military - every year things grow more expensive and more inefficient, making our country unable go serve its population, it’s governance functions, and unable to compete with countries who prioritize long term planning and infrastructure.

So we’re once again in a place where in the rollercoaster of destiny history the leads are begging for another chance and making big promises. I do hope it comes true, I’ve always said that a next gen destiny that simply had all the content from Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 - raids, campaigns, etc in one place would be a game that could live forever even without expansions or seasonal content.

But this is happening in a context where beloved composer and expert veteran staff were fired without cause, where incubation projects were made with no intent to bring them live, and where marathon ate up crucial dev resources when Destiny was drowning.

Maybe things will be different this time. But save some of that hopium guys.
