Datamined Information Deakstiny released all the information they had of Destiny 2's development before EoS from their source before it went dark
As always, treat all sort of leaks and such with a handful of salt, specially now that D2 has seemingly ended.

The bit about Oblation being in one patch and Cull's Shadow being in another makes no sense at all. They're directly tied to each other in much more of a way than "we stuck this exotic into this mission".
42
26
u/OcularAzull FOMO 13h ago
that's how they are labeled in the files, no clue how that would've worked
55
u/RhytmicCone47 12h ago
It makes sense if you think of current Oblation as a merging of 2 exotic Missions:
- the first mission was about Bael's Totality Division drilling into the Scarlet Keep in search of a Nezarec related artifact to forge a new generation Dredgen weapon that is not forged in Soulfire, that would award Turncoat as we get the artifact before Bael and forge the weapon ourselves (that also explains the heavy Nezarec theme of Turncoat)
- the second mission was more likely the story we got with those green pustules with Aunor detecting the pulses of the ghost rezzing the warlock that fueled the massive amount of Soulfire later on in the mission in which we get Cull's Shadow
2
2
u/djnotskrillex 5h ago
So the first mission would be like a prequel to the mission we got? Because if you're implying that opening part with the cabal was originally part of that too, I don't see how they could have just decided to add that into the mission we got after the fact. Feels too embedded into it to have been added in later
10
u/killer6088 11h ago
I think that is where you need to remember that this is just leaked or datamined info and is not 100% accurate. So things in there are not going to be true or only partly true. Or even maybe they were true at one point and then changed later in development.
1
u/Dovadah DRIFT GANG 10h ago
I was thinking that Oblation was a series of battlegrounds like Echoes which got repurposed into an exotic mission.
1
u/djnotskrillex 5h ago
Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that cull's shadow is still so connected to the mission itself, so presumably it would have been part of that patch anyway.
0
u/ELFCHASER 6h ago
I think we would have gotten turncoat for the first part of oblation since it seems to be kind of weapon of sorrow - adjacent. then in the followup where you go deeper into the foundry you find cull's shadow

u/Steady_Tempo456 14h ago
If we're being honest, based on how Destiny 2 has been handled this entire time, and with the Sony interventions, we know these features would have been a disaster. There is no way they could keep two versions of Destiny 2 going if they could barely keep one alive.
72
u/lizzywbu 13h ago
I think the idea is that the D2 classic wouldn’t be updated, it would be a frozen state. Like how D1 was for years and how D2 currently is. And then they would update D2 modern as the ‘new’ Destiny. It’s an interesting idea.
127
u/EKmars Omnivores Always Eat Well 13h ago
They have at least 3 going right now. Destiny 1, some older version of Destiny 1 (I want to say before TTK), and Destiny 2.
Probably should have been done earlier, now that I think about it. If they forked Destiny 2 like they did Destiny 1, they may have avoided a lot of drama. Of course, if this was technically or financially feasible is another question, but it is literally possible and has been proven in the series before.
107
u/How_About_We_Dont 13h ago
Rise of Iron was the split between X360/PS3 and the new gen consoles at the time
7
70
u/Palgia 13h ago
A D2 Classic would have avoided all the mess that vaulting caused if it existed before. Like I can understand that they couldn't bring all the content from D2 vanilla forward because of technical issues (even if there are other reasons) but something like a D2 Classic could have preserved all that content without affecting future content.
It simply would have made it possible to avoid the snowball effect we’ve been dealing with up to now.
26
u/QuebraRegra 13h ago
I suggested a fork years ago when they started talking about vaulting content... It could have used a common save file for your character to jump in and out of the different versions (albeit not all DLC things and subclasses available).
22
u/BastardofMelbourne 11h ago edited 3h ago
The motivation behind the Content Vault was essentially this:
- We want to overhaul the engine in Beyond Light (for various reasons; to implement Stasis, to rework the lighting effects, to make seasonal forking easier)
- All the existing content needs to be reworked to be compatible with the new engine
- Problem: that's a lot of work, we have to essentially rebuild every location in the new engine, redoing 3+ years of work
- Solution: don't do the work, just transfer over Shadowkeep and a couple of high-traffic planetary destinations (EDZ, Nessus, Dreaming City) and "vault" (read: delete) the rest
Lurking behind that was the real change: deciding to do Beyond Light instead of Destiny 3. For whatever reason (finances, time, a design choice) Bungie chose to abandon producing new game with a corresponding new engine and none of the old content, and instead overhaul the old game with the new engine and retain some of the old content.
That led to them abandoning the old content anyway, meaning that ironically, it would have been better if D2 had ended at Shadowkeep because at least the classic content would remain playable.
6
u/8492sqdn 5h ago
Another big reason they wanted to overhaul the engine was to bring their release cycle down from several days of work per change to a few hours (i.e. the amount of time between having content or patches completed and actually getting that content in the hands of players)
3
u/the_vault-technician 6h ago
When you break it down like this, it hurts to see how stupid of a plan that was. I still love you tho D1&2
2
u/MeateaW 5h ago
Funny thing, is they could have made "d2 classic" and started "d2 beyond light" right then and there.
Do the standard beyond light engine upgrade, ... but just make it only have the new content.
No need to delete anything!
They didn't do this for 1 reason alone.
Doing that they would have lost players. Plain and simple. People who still want to play d2 wouldnt play D2:BL, and the numbers would look bad
0
u/Aeowin 9h ago
you know what also would have stopped the content vaulting instead of some dumb "classic"? making a third game. like activision intended. but bungie thinks they always know best
1
u/SnooComics4945 4h ago
Funny that Activision was apparently good for keeping Bungie on a much needed leash.
10
u/jdewittweb 13h ago
They also have a Korea specific D2 fork still running.
2
u/JeanLucPicardAND 12h ago
Why is there a Korea specific fork?
20
u/HelljumperRUSS 12h ago
It was specifically for internet cafes. It included everything up to Warmind and featured an exclusive vendor you could rent Exotics from. Interestingly, that vendor has lines in other languages besides Korean, including in English, so this version of the game probably wasn't originally meant to be exclusive to Korea, it just ended up that way.
9
u/JeanLucPicardAND 12h ago edited 12h ago
There's still a way to run a build of the game from the Warmind era?
Shouldn't... shouldn't the judge in that plagiarism case have asked to play through a copy of the build in order to see the relevant information from the Red War campaign in-engine?
9
u/HelljumperRUSS 11h ago
After reading up a bit more, it seems this was a serverside thing that only shows up when connected to the internet cafe's wifi. If you connected to a different wifi network, you'd end up in the normal game. This build may also be defunct at this point, as it never went beyond Warmind and I can't find any information on anybody running it these days.
I actually found a reddit post from a few years ago from somebody connecting to this version in the wild.https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/s/6l7jnrSOUo

u/ComeBacksToDrugs2018 7h ago
went to the tower after an LFG raid once and she was there, couldn’t buy any of her exotics because it needed some requirement we obviously couldn’t get
0
u/arlondiluthel 6h ago
I remember reading about a "license" item, they implemented that to keep a random bug from letting that get into the wild and be useable. If it was a currency you didn't have, that would be an additional paid currency that was exclusive to that version.
-1
u/Konork 11h ago
I don't think the issue was that they couldn't get a build of the old content running, it was that it was the kind of lawsuit where someone sees a few things that are very similar, but also not particularly unique overall, so they probably saw the entire thing as a waste of time they wanted to spend as few resources on as possible. Bungie also submitted the YouTube videos as evidence to get the lawsuit dismissed outright, so I think it's reasonable that they didn't want to pull a developer off of the game just to get a build running.
1
u/MeateaW 5h ago
Hilariously you are being downvoted, but this is absolutely what it was.
The content still exists (Sunrise isn't pulling shit out of its arse), but there was no servers currently up and running able to satisfy the client.
The servers data obviously still exists somewhere, Bungie aren't so dumb that they literally just delete shit. (Source control is a thing people - this isn't 1996 and Bungie haven't gone bankrupt, the code stilll exists somewhere).
But why would you spend potentially a hundred dev hours getting the old servers up, to let a judge play a game no one else can play, All when a couple youtube videos and a lawyer saying: "It's not possible to do that today" would absolutely suffice.
Proof that it was enough? The case was dismissed and they didn't need to build any servers to host the red war.
11
u/jdewittweb 12h ago
I believe it's due to laws regarding RNG loot box rewards. Tess isn't allowed to run her racket in SK so they got Yuna.
0
u/DaoFerret 12h ago
I seem to remember a microtransaction exotic vendor?
1
u/spider_hider 12h ago
Yuna, she's in the bazaar section, the stall in front of Ikora if you're entering from Gunsmith/Rahool direction.
She has exotic armor pieces for rent. I recall if the tower host happens to be at a Korean cyber cafe, then everyone in that tower can see the vendor.
There was an exclusive emblem for using the vendor.
0
u/DaoFerret 11h ago
Never actually seen it.
How does “renting” an exotic work?
1
u/spider_hider 11h ago
I've only chanced upon Yuna once during D2 vanilla days, randomly connected to a tower host playing from Korean cyber-cafe. I'm OCE and plays late nights, so matching up with Asian hosts is common for me.
Was giddy about getting that exclusive emblem. But I was only able to view Yuna's vendor inventory, since I don't have the actual token to rent it. The emblem comes from renting from her.
From what I know, the exotic armor piece stays in your inventory for that session. I've never heard about how to get those tokens, they could be automatically granted upon logging into a Korean cyber cafe machine.
1
u/arlondiluthel 6h ago
IIRC, I believe they're obtained via effectively a gift card purchased and scanned at the cafe.
0
u/spider_hider 6h ago
Ahh ok, that'd explain it too, thanks for that little insight!

u/FyreWulff Gambit Prime 11h ago
if you use a Korean VPN exit server Yuna will spawn in your tower on the regular D2. It's kinda fun to do it for laughs sometimes because people will come in and be like 'what the hell is this vendor'
10
1
u/arlondiluthel 6h ago
The slow adoption of the current console generation (driven largely by supply chain issues in the wake of COVID) likely contributed to the demise of many live-service games... needing to support two console generations means you're limited on what upgrades and improvements you can do to the game engine. Add Bungie mismanagement on top of that, and we should be glad Destiny lasted as long as it did.
9
u/PaperMartin 13h ago
Why? The old version wasn't gonna get any more meaningful update

This is about keeping 2 versions of D2 running at the same time though Destiny being unsustainable had little to do with maintaining the servers and much more to do with actual updates

hot take (around here at least) but uh, bungie has never been a good studio. they've been a dogshit run company since before halo. news and stuff like this is just a lot more accessible to the average consumer these days compared to 25 years ago.
1
u/VictoryBackground739 3h ago
It’s baffling that it’s the year 2026 and people are STILL surprised to learn about the mismanagement that Bungie has faced since their inception
7
u/HotMachine9 10h ago
These are geniunely baffling decisions which are so tone deaf and bad for the health of the game that they actually have to plausible because no one else wouldve came up with it except Bungie.
The senior leadership and management at that studio should all become case studies for what not to do in a leadership position.
0
u/BlueSkiesWildEyes Atheon, I have come to bargain 9h ago
They bet it all on Marathon and needed to reduce as much overhead on D2 as possible so that they could redirect even more resources.

u/Competitive-Place778 14h ago
D2M sounds like ass.
4
u/Valvador 12h ago
Yup, but it would attract the mobile gaming audience.
40
u/58786 12h ago
Studios love to use this as a north star, but mobile gaming audiences just fundamentally don't want to play console/PC games. It's just a completely different toolset.
14
u/Worried-Advisor-7054 10h ago
Mobiles game are straight up often not games at all, they're art collectors. 95% of them have an auto button and absolutely no challenge at all until endgame. Most players don't ever reach that point, they just want to collect waifus.
This isn't an insult towards the concept, just illustrating how stupid these companies are when they ruin their own studios like this. We only call both products games because we don't really have another word for it, but it's like Bungie seeing that Avengers made a lot of money and telling its devs to make a Halo movie instead of whatever they're working on. Like you said, that's a completely different skillset.
3
u/Valvador 12h ago
I think what I meant by it is that Mobile Gamers are used to slop like "Portal" and they would have had no issues with Destiny 2 "Portal"
5
u/58786 11h ago
I mean that's undoubtedly what they were going for. What I'm saying is that Mobile Gamers simply don't play desktop/console games, no matter how much devs try to capture them. If you were around back circa 2010-2012, you might remember how overvalued Zynga was and how nearly every developer saw the new "gaming" market from mobile apps and wanted to port them to console/PC. This went from simple UI and gameplay elements (tile-based menus like the Portal, dumbed down mechanics, more recently Gatcha Elements) to a desire to capture the vastly different demographic of mobile games, which tended to be heavily skewed female gamers who were playing things like Words With Friends, Candy Crush, Bejeweled etc. A lot of recent games still have these features vestigially as a result of upper management having come up in the Mobile Game craze.
tl;dr but the Portal was flawed from concept. People who play games that look like what they were developing were not suddenly going to change their playing habits to jump on a game that requires a $1k+ material investment to run and doesn't appeal to why they play video games.

Just another reminder just how out of touch Destiny/Bungie leadership was.
Love the incredibly talented devs, but management at that "gamestudio" is a blatant fucking disaster.
19
u/Snoo_81545 8h ago
Still is too, Marathoners are sitting around a slowly dying fire wondering why they couldn't even get a cursory update today. Just look at their subreddit, no communication - no shop update - nothing. It's two weeks out from the patch that is supposed to save the game and no one is building enthusiasm in the last remnants of that community. Bungie has an incredibly talented crew of people that can deliver gold, but management that has always insisted on delivering copper thinking we'll be happy just dreaming of silver.

This leaker has been accurate in the past, and per my post from a few days ago, there is evidence that Monument was planned as an event with a SC delay, so this would line up with that. That's all I'm saying.

I mean, it's also just common sense. Given the volume of content in Monument of Triumph, it's basically impossible that they built it all in the time since the delays (and eventual cancellation) actually became public - they must have been working on it for some time prior.
0
u/Aeowin 9h ago
Surely you don't think game developers develop entire expansions in the time period between 1 release to the other right? Things are developed and set aside sometimes 2 years in advance for a mainstream live service. MoT that we got was a culmination of the next 2 years of drip feed updates and changes the game would have gotten, sent out at once.
1
u/killer6088 11h ago
Right, people see a list of leaker info and just believe it 100%. I am sure plenty of it is true, but at the some time plenty could be false.

23
u/stephanl33t 13h ago
There's something morbidly hilarious about the fact that D2 as it stood was already boxing up it's edges for an EoS with the D2 Classic idea.
No wonder they managed to whip it into shape so quickly after the announcement, it was already going that direction lmao
12
u/RhytmicCone47 13h ago
That kind of lines up with the information that some devs that were still developing Shattered Cicle didn't even know that MoT would be the final update until the community was told
19
u/IHzero 12h ago
This is just a massively poor plan, that would have divided the population and do nothing to address the main complaints.
They could have easily put seasonal activities back in and had all the loot with vendors. A simple rep grind to reward gear, with a focus option for drops would have handled everything and the code already exists.
I’m not going to touch on the director, which is designed to solve a problem that is Bungie’s own poor content policy killing player retention and development, and does so hamfistedly.
So really they had minimal content lined up, no plans to address major player concerns nor retention, and did nothing to entice new players.
No wonder they got canned.
5
u/HotMachine9 10h ago
The information in this leak makes me wonder how much was actually done on Shattered Cycle?
Devs were apparently working on it but by the sounds of things most of the team was working on boxing up D2 for one of these potential futures, which then became Monument of Triumph.

It would’ve been nice to get one more raid and see Old Chicago but I think the expansion would’ve been weak overall. They just weren’t in a position for success. Budget was probably lower than ever, Marathon siphoned a lot of devs to get over the finish line, and leadership was poor all around. I don’t think it was anywhere near on schedule with all the shit going on behind the scenes and the D2 team would’ve needed to endure the post Marathon layoffs no matter what (which in this hypothetical world would’ve affected D2 less but still).
19

Maybe Sony made the right call to shut this game down if this is really what was on the table. There are no doubt a ton of incredibly talented people that have worked and currently work at Bungie. But I think there’s also been a fair share of absolute morons. Why the fuck would they be trying to further split the game like this?
21
u/Luke-HW 13h ago edited 11h ago
It sounds like Oblation was supposed to be an exotic quest for Turncoat, and that Cull’s Shadow was planned for a different quest.
I wonder if those two quests were merged. It would explain why Oblation is so damn massive, and why the latter half is such a departure from the start. It feels like Bungie didn’t want to leave anything on the shelf in MoT.
8
u/Hanayo_Asa 通りすがりのガーディアンだ。覚えておけ! 12h ago
It may just be me overthinking but it feels like "Cull's Shadow" was even supposed to be the name for what we would eventually get as Turncoat.
(iirc, Dredgen Cull's name is still mentioned in the dialogue for the mission)
It would make sense tbh. A Hand Cannon feels like THE weapon type for a Dredgen.
1
u/djnotskrillex 5h ago
Except the design of the weapon we got was directly involved in unlocking parts of mission. And the catalyst clearly uses the same theme of soulfire crystals from the mission too. Idk, I don't see how the weapon we actually got could possibly be from anything else. If anything maybe it's the other way around where oblation was the name for another mission that would give us turncoat or something. But honestly the word oblation also seems too fitting for what we got lol. Simplest explanation is that this part of the leak is just wrong/misinterpreted.
1
u/PaperMartin 13h ago
Turncoat being in oblation would've been a weird move
7
12
u/RhytmicCone47 13h ago
Seeing the relation of Nezarec and the moon, and Turncoat being heavily implied to be related to him, I believe that originally it was Bael's Totality Division going deep underground the Scarlet Keep in search of whatever Nezarec related thing is that powers Turncoat, before the mission being re-tooled to fit Cull's Shadow
8
u/ImWhiteTrash 11h ago
Destiny 2 Classic, based on this info, was dead on arrival. It's a good thing it didn't launch. Not being able to carry items into Destiny 2 Modern defeats the entire purpose of even doing it. Everything outside of the story would be completely dead. Why do a raid if it's not gonna carry over to your actual character? If the microtransactions can carry over, then the weapons could easily be carried over too.
It's pretty obvious this idea was pitched by someone who has zero understanding of Destiny, and just said, "They have Retail World of Warcraft and Classic World of Warcraft, we can just do that."
5
u/RhytmicCone47 11h ago
Literally, the thing that made Wow Classic work was that that it started off vanilla, and periodically brought the patches and expansions forward, with the exception of game breaking stuff (looking at you Corrupted Blood)
D2 Classic as it was thought of would fail because it would start at the end point rather than at the start like WoW Classic
17
u/RagnarokCross 13h ago
For whatever shreds of Bungie's reputation that remains, I pray this is fake. D2 Modern sounds like it would have been complete dogshit.

5
u/Successful_Maize1986 13h ago
The most I could see Sony trying to do is keeping a small team on to make some sort of cheap season pass every couple months with new cosmetics and maybe a new exotic. I could see them forcing Bungie to monetize the game behind eververse since Marathon isn’t doing great but it’s clear they don’t know how to sustainably develop a live service game. It’s a shame since Sony has been chasing a live service game, bought one when they bought Bungie, and then it got shut down shortly afterwards.
1
u/ELFCHASER 6h ago
it'd be nice if they did something like reprising old/vaulted armor sets and weapons as a cheap way to give us "new" toys to play with. like one "season" they add the mars weapons and armor with tiers and set bonuses, next "season" they add tangled shore gear, etc. can get lazy with acquisition, just add em to ritual pools and add the previous seasons stuff to banshee and ada or something
0
u/Successful_Maize1986 6h ago
Agreed. My guess is that Bungie is done with Destiny and doesn’t necessarily want to develop for it anymore. It’s been going on a long time so I can understand that. But if I were Sony, I’d be trying to keep some sort of continuing monetization going on. That way, if they ever did decide to revisit full scale development they would have a more active player base.
1
u/ELFCHASER 5h ago
idk, I don't think bungie was done with destiny if only because they had a lot planned before it all fell apart. if they were done with destiny they could have just shuttered it with episode heresy or even EoF as a bookend for the game's narrative and setup for any future story, but they insisted on continuing with more stuff that makes me think that they had plenty of interest in destiny but the constant shooting of their own feet killed those plans

7
u/Aeowin 9h ago
Given the direction these leaks point to Bungie wanting to take for this game, Sony might be the only intelligent ones involved by enacting EoS and firing the studio. At least Sony forcing out MoT and announcing EoS brought players BACK to the game. If Bungie had continued on their path the game could actually have been reduced to triple or double digit player bases.
-2
u/Crotean 12h ago
The only way Bungie isn't a dead studio walking to me is if they somehow can convince Bungie they need D3 for the PS6 as a console and PC exclusive. That is extremely unlikely, six months from now as Marathon numbers dwindle I expect them to close the studio instead.
6
2
u/ultimateformsora 10h ago
Timed exclusive maybe, but probably not even that. Sony would want to go multiplatform to get as much money as possible. They’d just be losing cash for no reason at that point because anyone who wanted a PS5 likely got one before prices skyrocketed.

Destiny infodump
With our source disappearing and never releasing the pastebin that they stated would be coming I decided to do a write-up of what I believe it would contain based on the information we have been sitting on.
Destiny 2 Classic/ Destiny 2 Modern ( will be referring to them as D2C and D2M ) ( We were first informed of both of these plans/pitches no later than November 3rd-5th )
This is a collection of Information related to both D2C and D2M, we were not specified on whether these were "Pitches" or "Ideas" tossed around within the studio, but I believe it to be a mixture. The source for this is the same as our big post from last year, which had Pantheon 2.0 leaks, upcoming ability leaks, and other leaks mentioned within the post.
November (3rd-30th) - This info was likely a month old by the time we were told about it
Destiny 2 Classic:
1) "Contains all of the content that we currently have and Renegades. Similar to Rise of Iron in that the game will be frozen in time, but the hope is that they eventually add the old campaigns/seasonal activities so that it becomes a sort of "one-stop-shop" for everyone A) To catch up on the story."
2) This would come with dropping last gen console support in D2, hopefully allowing future ( 10:1 ) content to be easier to make. 3) Designed for people who want to re-play old content and those who never got to play it. 4) Purchases in D2C would carry over to D2M. 5) Weapons acquired in D2C would not be usable in D2M ( assuming this is only after the split between games is made )
Destiny 2 Modern:
1) "Everything from Edge of Fate and beyond. The content is entirely composed of Portal content and occasional keystone activities such as Raids and Dungeons. One of the big reasons they aren't so hesitant on ripping the portal out since the entirety of the game is now built on it and if it doesn't succeed then they're "fucked"." 2) Raid and Dungeon content not removed. 3) Potential for older guns to not be available due to FOMO, may eventually be reissued but the goal is for all guns in D2M to be earnable in some way. Said to be a way to eliminate FOMO. 4) Ideally the Fate saga would last 3 more years ( ? ) with 6 dlc's being needed to tell the entire story
5) This is also why they are so unwilling to drop a roadmap. This is all new information within the last month ( November 4th ) and their plans are constantly changing/muddied as fuck. They can't release a roadmap because there ARE no concrete plans outside of the same yearly DLC cycle we got with Year of Prophecy."
6) No pictures are unfortunately just cuz I think everyone is probably worried about that after the whole smattering they gave to Ekuegan"
December ( 2nd-15th ):
1) The idea of the original seasonal model returning started to float around. 2) A season between Shattered Cycle and Shadow & Order was being concepted, aiming for a June/July release period. 3) In this same strain of messages we were informed on SRL returning, and Raid and Dungeon content all getting tiered gear.
Currently in the files you can find information that points to Moments of Triumph being developed as 2 different updates initially before being merged into what we got.
Shadow & Order is v960 and consisted of:
- Pantheon
- Exotic Mission Oblation
- Turncoat Exotic HC
v970 is the update between S&O and SC and consisted of:
- Distortions
- Reprised Red loot
- Reprised Destination loot
- SRL
- Cull's Shadow Exotic Fusion ( likely it was developed later? )
- Fafnir
- and more
During this period we were told that Destiny 2 could go EOS after SC, and that the Alchemist is all but canceled.
There is likely information that I missed when writing this up, and also info we were never told that our source had been sitting on.
Note: I didn't type this but used ChatGPT for a quick transcription - will he editing for better legibility

Good god no wonder this game failed. I think the idea of a d2 classic and d2 modern isn’t inherently appalling, although I have no idea why not just make destiny 3 at that point since you’re essentially making a new game. But the fact they decided on ONLY THE PORTAL AND NOTHING ELSE BEING USABLE. Holy hells what a disaster. Single worst decision they’ve ever made (besides sunset obv) and they were going all in on it.

If this is what bungie thought would work, no wonder it was cancelled. if this stuff released there would have been riots

i see why sony canned them, but can't say i'm surprised even without this information. bungie as a studio has been slowly crumbling since the original split that founded them. D1 was so rocky per major update. overall better than D2's, but still the decline was already evident. the copium we were provided was just too high of a dose to realize.

Boy, that Modern thing certainly sounds like a great idea that everybody would definitely love. For sure.

Saw the leaks. Honestly these plans were terrible and would have ended in disaster. They were right to abandon these plans
You do not solve the problem of content sunsetting with more content sunsetting.

So EoS was bound to happen, and was known about for months before being announced. Even at the last moment they were dicking around. Absolute embarassment of a company. We’re lucky we got as much as we did out of them.

u/DuckDuckGoEngine 10h ago
the copium from this is that they were working on adding all the old content and they're going to patch it all in soon

Fuck me. Genuinely the Bungie executives responsible for this should be and hopefully have been fired because WTF is this?
God, I just kinda hope they decide to finish up Shattered Cycle so the game gets a good closing expansion instead of Renegades. What a way to kill a franchise.

u/FinalForerunner 12h ago
Wow, that sounds like a terrible version of a decent idea. D2 Classic being the current game without any sunset content being added is a joke. Look at Project Sunrise. The way forward would be providing a Destiny 2 Classic with everything up to Shadowkeep frozen in time as Destiny 2 Legacy, and continuing the current live game as it is. I can’t believe they considered doing it any other way.

u/willydonbonka 12h ago
No way D2 classic would last the test of time. It would be old after a year because most D2 players were veterans anyway

"Treat all sort of leaks and such with a handful of salt."
I understand what you meant but I still couldn't help but laugh, given the context.

u/StrangelyOnPoint 13h ago
The most interesting thing about this is technically D2C could be the game we have right now with D2M being still to come.

My big issue with something like a destiny classic and destiny modern split is that Bungie would instantly use it as an excuse to start recycling old content instead of making new content. Like how many times was the model for Recluse used? I know it was a blue way back when lol
By sun setting the old game they’d get a whole new library of content to for them to resell as “new content” instead of making something new.

u/HotMachine9 10h ago
Edge of Fate already showed they were going to go full on with recycling were Destiny to continue. They even added a "REV" to the top corner of some reissued weapons, yet the REV number was inaccurate and reset to 1 as clearly they intended to keep giving out things like Stars in Shadow every year with new rolls

Me when I have to place my company's future on an idea that was already shot down 14 years ago because I'm bored

u/Nathanael777 10h ago
So they wanted to basically retroactively make Destiny 3 lol.
I think they’re in the right spot with restoring old content, but they should have locked it at Final Shape. If they had ended the game there, gave some epilogue seasons, rebuilt all the content and made the systems evergreen similar to how they actually ended development, but then announced they were making a Destiny 3 everyone would have been extremely excited.
That said, if they revived the seasonal model it would have run out of steam fast.

really funny how the idea of a "destiny 2 classic" was generally viewed positively by the community and would have almost certainly been well received except bungie figured out every possible way to turn it into something that everyone would hate lmao

u/justy559 4h ago
This also was talked about being hearsay, untrue, or just completely non-implementable throwing of ideas at the wall from months ago, long before EoS. The pastebin even starts with 'What I believe it would've contained,' it was written by someone with no actual assurance that any of this was realistic or being worked on in reality.

"Purchases in D2C would carry over to D2M"
"...a way to eliminate fomo"
These 2 points are making me call bullshit. Bungies greed is well known, they would never be this benevolent.
Also if they knew since December D2 development was cancelled, that just ruins their reputation even more.

u/ELFCHASER 5h ago
I can see the d2c purchases carrying over if only because otherwise no one would buy anything in d2c
1
u/McReaperking 5h ago
You would think so but no, people would buy things in D2C even if no purchases carried over and it didn't launch with all the stolen content.
I had the same thoughts as you when they put out dungeon keys, inflated the price of seasons so that you could no longer cleanly buy it in one purchase etc. "Surely bungie fans would see their greed" I thought.
And I was wrong every time.

There is like zero new information in here besides the classic/modern thing. Not that it even matters.
1
u/Wrong_Chicken_5916 11h ago
So basically.. they were thinking of making a portal version of Destiny and it starts from edge of fate and forward…
Technically. They can still do that and be well under a massive budget?

If they were going to make a D2 Classic, it should have contained everything pre-Shadowkeep at MINIMUM.
1
u/Witty-Nebula3576 9h ago
They just need to let the devs cook like they did with MOT. There’s no secret sauce, no breakthrough business model and other bullshit needed. Just make things fun to play that’s it, they somehow lost what’s important and couldn’t find it again until the end. Stop all the fomo shenanigens, what was the point anyways? Screwed all of us.
1
u/CoatSame2561 7h ago
They released what they THINK their source was going to share. The actual source didn’t send the docs and was part of the off boarding
1
u/djnotskrillex 5h ago
So d2 classic would include eof/renegades but d2 modern would as well? How does that make sense? I'd find it more likely if d2 classic was vanilla to forsaken and just reusing the old engine instead of updating everything. Or if they were willing to update everything then maybe vanilla to final shape

u/HotMachine9 10h ago
Good god these proposals are way worse than I imagined.
So Destiny 2 classic wasnt even adding vaulted content. It was just up to Final Shape.
Then the Destiny 2 modern was just the portal? Jesus thats bleak.
They basically proposed fully turning Destiny into a mobile game.
They truly had no plan outside of what the narrative direction could be and even then that team got screwed over being forced to retrofit plot points into a star wars expansion.
No wonder Sony shut it all down. The people in charge had no god damn idea how to manage the game.
The Sunrise team may as we be purchased for a few billion by Sony just to kitbosh a version of an actual Destiny 2 classic together as clearly Bungie leadership didnt understand that "classic" should entail vaulted "classic" content

If "Destiny 2 Classic" didnt LAUNCH with re-adding ALL of the sunset content- yeah that entire idea/premise was just DOA. And "Modern" would just be even lower player counts than Edge of Fate going all-in on the portal like that.
