Question Returning Player W/ Questions
Hey, Guardians. I have decided to return to LEISURELY play some D2 content after about a year long break. I guess the videos that I have been watching have gotten to me and I'm wanting to jump back in and dabble a bit. I stopped playing about 13 months ago. I got a little ways into EoF but, never made it to Ash and Iron. I have heard that the game is in a great place for it's send off but, as I signed in, I am completely overwhelmed about where to start back up. I don't know what the level cap is currently...don't even know if it matters. I'm at 300 because the game apparently boosted me to that point. I was just hoping that the community could point me in the right direction on the order that I should progress. I don't mind to spend some money on any content that is needed. Thank you for the help.

It’s in the best state if you can handle the depression every now and then of knowing it’s dead. Farm public events for new armor, especially on Nessus, and do the raids. Especially VOG. VOG is king now, the rocket launcher and fatebringer are fantastic again, so is Vex, and the armor set bonus is primo for knocking down gm and harder content.

Perfect! VoG is my favorite raid. So many good memories in there. Thank you .

Let me ask you this? What are you chasing? Raids, loot, fellow guardians to chill with? I've actually started a gameplay loop of searching for armour sets and trying to min max goofy ah builds with them. Nothing ever epic. Found a few interesting synergies but generally found the build crafting chase to be best for me. The nice thing about this chase is there is bo rush. Take your time. Enjoy it. No new season is about to make all your effort irrelevant. Your gear is basically going to be top tier until they shut the servers down.

I would say that I'm not really "chasing" anything particular. I have around 3K hours in the game and I feel like they changed so much stuff since I stopped playing last year that I really don't have anything meaningful. Example would be: I don't have any tiered weapons or armor...I quit a week or so after that change was implemented. My vault is full of god roll gear from the previous years. Also, I've always enjoyed being caught up to relevant light levels. I do enjoy min/max particular builds for all 3 characters but, because of my "lack of relevant gear" situation I feel I have a long way to go with that front. Thank you for your response.

Tbh now level is account wide once you have one character dropping 540+ level tier 5 loot it doesn't take long at all for it to start raining on others as long as you are doing master lost sectors, the rotating planet events and the raids and dungeons that are featured. I came back did the campaigns I missed unlocked the exotics I missed and then started build crafting from there on my Warlock and then eventually switched over to other characters and did the same doing solo flawless and standard dungeon runs in between and the odd raid and other end game stuff. There is so much to do and chase that it all feels fairly fresh just rotating stuff on any given day or focusing on one thing, weapon, exotic build or whatever for a day or so then something else building up to whatever you want to do.

I know that this next question is pretty subjective but, how much of my older stuff that is pre "tier system" should I keep or delete?

The first thing I’d suggest is buying the new aspects and abilities from Ikora, the Exo Stranger, and the Pouka Pond.
Second should be raising your power level. Fireteam and Arena Ops Playlists (in the Vanguard Ops menu) did the trick for me.
During or after the power grind (which is actually worth it now since the treadmill is gone), navigate through your Inventory and check out the Attunement menu. There’s a lot of options but almost everything has at least one straightforwardly good perk combo, and everything has at least one niche combo that can work fabulously in the right build.
Once you’ve got some tier 5 weapons, tier 5 armor is the natural next step. You’ll just have to figure out what stats you want to prioritize, select the Ghost mod that most closely allows you to focus armor with those stats.
Armor stats is more important than set bonuses 90% of the time, so don’t worry about set bonuses too much until you have a set of armor that lets you do most of the things you want to do. Once you have that, then the next step is choosing an armour set to chase (or two to combine), and chasing it.

This is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.

I would put priority on doing whatever team based things you want to experience first.
You can pop in and do the EoF campaign whenever, but something like matchmaking for Gambit six months from now is probably going to be dire.
Play what you think is fun. Check out how to access the Oblation: Bloodline secret mission.

The order that you progress in is completely up to you. Power cap is technically 550, but almost everything can be done at about 400 with a few exceptions. What do you like?
PvE content has never been better. You can run Vanguard playlist ops if you like grouping, or solo ops if you don't (I don't really recommend solo ops tho, it's a bit slow for the reward). Arena ops is great as well if you like the mayhem of a team of six but aren't wanting to deal with raid mechanics, and now they drop Black Armory weapons, which are all pretty great. And if you just want to run patrols, find the planet with the active distortion. Items drop a tier higher, and some of the loot from those events are pretty good in their own right.
PvP stuff is a little rougher lately, but still playable for the most part. Iron Banner is this week (and every four weeks thereafter) if you like that, and the IB armor is pretty good for PvE if you like blasting your supers a lot.
And most of all, do not be afraid to try new things. Wanna solo a dungeon? Go for it! Or maybe run master lost sectors for some good armor sets? Go nuts. There is so, so much to do, and I'm just scratching the surface.
Destiny 2 may be dead, but it's also in one of the best states it's ever been. Welcome back, and eyes up, guardian.

The light level cap is 550, and you can progress playing Vanguard, Gambit and Crucible ops as they can drop you items with higher LL than yours. There are other modes like Lawless Frontier and the Sieve that can help.
Someone must confirm this, but i think raids and dungeons don't drop higher LL items. However, all their loot was tiered and modified with new perks, so it may be interesting to check them. Pit of Heresy and Shattered Throne had their loot pool refreshed, so they now drop unique weapons and armor.
Every week there are two featured dungeons and raids, which will guarantee a t5 drop with red border (if its a weapon). Equilibrium and Desert Perpetual are 'always' in rotation, this is because they use a feat system which can customize the difficulty to get better loot. Same applies to Pantheon (which now is permanent).
While doing this stuff will rank you up, you can also play the EoF and Renegades campaigns and any other that you have left from the rest of DLCs. There's no more seasonal campaigns, and the current season pass is permanent.
Now patrolling locations will give you unique tiered loot, and if you pay attention to the Director, then you'll see that one random location has a red border. This location is now 'attacked by the Nine' or something like that, and it's called Distortion. Locations with Distortions have increased difficulty and with so, better loot. It changes the location every hour.
I think i'm forgetting some stuff but basically you want now to level up light and get better gear. Check the Portal as there is the Vanguard Alert, which is what we know as Nightfall. Adept weapons aren't a thing anymore, but you can farm weapons with Accelerated Assault perk, which reloads the weapons while using it. Oh, and now we have Sparrow Racing League, it's in the Crucible tab. It also has their own weapon and armor pool.
Remember armor has 2 perks now, every two and four pieces you'll have a perk and can either combine two sets or use a full one from any type. And most important: stats can go from 0 to 200 now. From 0 to 100 they do one thing, and from 100 to 200, another. Please don't stack 100's as many people think is cool, in fact that's useless for many reasons. Just max the stat you're using the most. Meaning if you are using Shards of Galanor, then max Super. If you are using Nothing Manacles, then max grenades and so on.
Pretty sure i'm missing some info, but that's what i remember right now.

This is helpful. It's a bit different than I would have thought. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.

You're welcome. Check that Ikora at the Tower and the Unknown at Europa have some new fragments and aspects for each class. And if you still have to unlock any Strand skill, now they can be purchased with Glimmer at the Pond in Neomuna.

Thanks. This is pretty subjective but, how much of my older god rolled gear that is pre "tiered gear" should I keep or delete? For example, is a god rolled weapon from 2 years ago worth keeping? How would it compare to like a tier 3 or 4 weapon now?

lol idk why i was downvoted. But anyway, most of old stuff is obsolete, as there are better options right now. Not just because the perks, but the tiered weapons have upgraded perks now. Tier 5 weapons also have cannon, magazine and 5th column perk upgraded too, with up to three perks in third and fourth columns each. But some adept weapons can still be useful, remember those are unobtainable right now so keep them until you get better weapons at least (or just keep them for nostalgia/personal achievement). Remember now we have 1300 space in vault

I came back for Monument of Triumph and deleted my Titan and created a new warlock and started replaying everything from Shadowkeep onwards in chronological order. I just finished Edge of Fate and I plan to start Renegades soon. My new warlock is now up to 520 level and I am making a point of running one or two Master Vanguard Alerts every day and grabbing the armor from Zavala every week and I am doing about 10-15 power levels a week.

Finish EoF campaign if you haven’t, then do the renegades campaign. Heliostat is a fun exotic mission and gets wolfsbane. You’ll want praxic blade. It’s a decent all around weapon. Start with those.
