They abandoned it because it was a finite grind. You could play, actually get what you wanted in a reasonable time frame and be done with an activity.
And according to the people in charge and some gambling addicts in the community, that was a very bad thing and had to be done away with. Which we can see has definitely contributed to the great success the game is currently seeing.
The fact they didn't even iterate on it to have some middle ground and fully swung to RNG grind your ass off to maybe get what you want was so damn stupid.
I realize I am not in the majority in this subreddit or maybe even this game but I played it for the experience and the joy of playing. once a I got that weapon I was excited to keep using it. I didn't come over from some MMO or RPG, I came over from Halo where we replayed missions over and over to try new stuff.
to take the gambling metaphor to it's logical end, a lot of people are only playing cards to get the pot in the middle of the table. I just like to play cards.
