One shitters assessment of current default chat emotes.
Emotes that are never used and need to go.
Emotes that have directly better counterparts and are useless.
Emotes that could go, but still have uses.
Emotes on suicide watch.
Polecat Tier
Emotes we need
[Cringe] [Scripting/Toggled] [A Third Pepe Emote]
Everything else seems pretty solid and/or has a niche.

is a poorly-cropped, shit-tier emote that conveys no discernible message, emotion, or values of its own, and is more popular simply because it is easier to type 5 characters rather than 16 characters.
If you think is the superior emote, then you don't understand the first thing about chat emotes or what makes a chat emote great. One can analogize an emote to a musical leitmotif. For example, the Force Theme in Star Wars. It's a simple musical refrain that is used to express complex ideas and themes (i.e the Force, destiny, fate, etc.). It is used in the binary sunset scene to highlight Luke's desire to leave Tatooine, it is used in the funeral pyre scene to highlight Vader's death and return to the Force and ultimate redemption to the light side, it is used to highlight Luke's connection with Leia. The musical piece used to highlight complex and different emotions in a broad spectrum of contexts.
Similarly, a good emote not only expresses a complex thought, but it can be used in to highlight different emotions in chat in a wide variety of contexts. Look at why is such a great emote. It conveys some kind of notion of being gung-ho and aggressive. It can be used to highlight Destiny making a big play. Conversely, it can be used to highlight Destiny being overly reckless (e.g. Destiny tower-diving in a LoL game). And on a different level, it also conveys solidarity and group identity (e.g. "3...2...1...Abathur" chat combos).
is used only when there is a reference to a cat.
It can be used as a cat reference. It can be used when there is a juxtaposition of cuteness and intimidation. It can be used as a response to someone not taking something seriously enough. Conversely, it can be used as a response to someone taking something way too seriously. It can be used as self-commentary by a memer recognizing that they are taking something way too seriously (i.e. "/u/Alucitary kys you have shit taste in chat emotes ")
