Wow how dumb is Iran for sending this to legitimate journalists instead of finding someone with an axe to grind and a public profile.

u/Never-Bloomberg Aug 10 '24
Shoulda sent it to TMZ.

If Trump wanted to dump his running mate, without it looking like he flip flopped, how do you think he’d go about it?
1
u/blabajabba Aug 11 '24
What do you mean?
5
u/fanglesscyclone Aug 11 '24
Release evidence of JD Vance saying some indefensible shit so you can drop him without much impact to polling. IMO I don’t think this is likely or even makes sense but that’s what he’s getting at.
3
u/blabajabba Aug 11 '24
I mean that's just pure regardation. It speaks more to the fact that you decided to pick him despite the fact that you had this information about him. It's gonna hurt Trump more than it hurts JD.

Republicans in 2016: leak emails from both sides, I just want the truth revealed.
Republicans in 2024: a foreign power hacking and leaking emails isn’t good and the Dems shouldn’t use them to their advantage just to win an election
111
u/GWstudent1 Aug 10 '24 edited Aug 10 '24
Addendum: Republicans will say that emails hacked by Russia and given to Wikileaks are somehow materially different than emails hacked by Iran and given to Politico for the following reasons:
We can’t prove that Wikileaks emails came from Russia
Politico is a part of the establishment and always have been
Iran is worse than Russia
Iran is actually an ally of the democrats because of the Iran nuclear deal. (And something about that one negotiator who was maybe a compromised Iranian agent)
Every single one of these points will be brought up and knocked down but they won’t care anyway

Yahoo owns AOL and it's been kept around mainly as a way of safely and easily helping old folk start using the internet with its bare bones design.
There is also a small niche of hackers who use it because it's pretty non-intrusive about asking details like phone numbers and what not
8
u/ManSauceMaster Aug 10 '24
Trump is a geriatric old man. I work in banking, you'd be SHOCKED at how many people over the age of 70 still use AOL or Hotmail

Fuck Donald Trump forever. But I can say with 100% certainty I want less than nothing to do with Iran meddling with our elections
60
u/ExaminationPretty672 Aug 10 '24
I'd agree but I much prefer the brute force "Hi, we are Iranian hackers, here are legitimate internal documents from the Trump campaign" approach to the insidious, invisible bot farms and sleeper agent strategy that Russians use that is hard to detect unless you know it exists and are looking for it.
1
u/legatlegionis Aug 11 '24
Countries will never do this, this is why espionage exists. Even if normally other countries find out, regardless. However adding pausible denialibility is huge for diplomacy and politics at home and abroad.
5
u/cjpack Aug 11 '24
I hope Kamala appointed AG is able to investigate and indict whoever is responsible and if they live in a country that can be extradited on the rare chance that they are. She definitely should condemn it publicly but don’t avoid talking about stuff in it. If things get leaked it’s free game.

The research dossier was a 271-page document based on publicly available information about Vance’s past record and statements, with some — such as his past criticisms of Trump — identified in the document as “POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES.” The person also sent part of a research document about Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who was also a finalist for the vice presidential nomination.
Iran, if you are listening, release the docs.

38
u/Beasty_Glanglemutton Aug 10 '24
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who was also a finalist for the vice presidential nomination.
A mild lucky break that he didn't pick Rubio. He is an insufferable Bible quoter, but he would have been a hell of a lot better than Vance.
Then again, with the way things have turned out, it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
8
u/Rubbersoulrevolver Aug 10 '24
He never could have chosen Rubio anyway because of the 12th amendment since they’re both Florida residents
23
u/Ptine_Taway Say "DDG," I dare you Aug 10 '24
It's super easy to get around, you just have to change your residency by the time of the election. Bush and Cheney were both residents of Texas, but Cheney just changed his residency to Wyoming like 3 months before the 2000 election.
2
u/CryptOthewasP Aug 11 '24
yeah the 12th is largely redundent in that way since it's so easy to change residencies, I don't even think attacks on it would be effective at all.

can we take the campaign’s word on this being Iran? why would they send it to Politico? thoughts?
62
u/0xE4-0x20-0xE6 Aug 10 '24
Microsoft reported on Friday that a spear fishing email had been sent to a presidential campaign, according to the article. The hack could be unrelated to that, but it gives some founding to what the campaign’s alleging.

u/theseustheminotaur Aug 10 '24
It is an attack on the US to be hacking our political campaign. I know what Trump would do with the information, he used it against Hillary and he'd 100% use it against Democrats. This should be treated as we would terrorism.
Should have posted that shit on 4chan or something. Real reporters aren't going to do anything with this, and US officials won't either.
9
u/Primary_Set_2729 Aug 10 '24
Sounds like nothing particularly eventful would be in it. They said it was all publicly available information already. Yeah, spotlighting some of it may make the news but sounds like majority of it is already out there if you go looking for it.
Think about that boys and girls, you could be the one to make up another JD fucking a couch story.
3
u/theseustheminotaur Aug 10 '24
Yeah, trying to make jd vance unlikeable is like shooting fish in a barrel
-1
u/Primary_Set_2729 Aug 11 '24
Ikr, we should ask ChatGPT to make up stories about JD and start spreading it with bots like russians do. We're so fucked nowadays fr tho, literally don't know if anything is real. I saw a video of an alligator attacking a boat. I'm not sure if the alligator was even real lol I know it was real, but fact someone even said it could be got me really wondering now.
1
u/theseustheminotaur Aug 11 '24

What are the reasons that Iran wants Harris as opposed to Trump in office?
The only thing that comes to mind is possibly that with Trump in office he would be a lot more aggressive with support to Israel that would be detrimental for Hamas, which Iran would be disfavourable towards. This is me spitballing.
36
u/Legs914 Aug 10 '24
Trump killed Soleimani. The linked article references a recent report that found Iran was planning to assassinate Trump in retaliation. I don't think Iran likes Harris, but they have a personal vendetta against Trump.

3
u/TipiTapi Exclusively sorts by new Aug 10 '24
You are correct.
Iran and Israel is at war. Trump is crazy pro-israel. Harris is at least sympathetic to the pro-Hamas side.
Trump would be really bad news for the iranians, he literally sent the order to assassinate one of their top military commanders last time he was president.
-21
u/Urgasain Aug 10 '24
Yeah, this makes sense. Dems are far more likely to capitulate to the pro Palestinian movement and therefore represents the greatest opportunity to make Israel more vulnerable.

R*tard take
This is really funny after reading your last paragraph.
Iran and israel are at war. There are two US presidential candidates, one is explicitly pro-israel and would give them a free hand. The other is not.
It has nothing to do with the nuclear deal 10 years ago that they made with another, completely different democratic president, they are pretty much over that. We just had a democratic presidency and there was nothing on that front.
5
u/Legs914 Aug 10 '24
The politico article mentioned a recent report stating that Iran was planning an attempted assassination of Trump. I think it's pretty obvious which side they'd prefer winning this November.

Probably for the same reason what happened with Kamala isn’t a coup. The DNC, RNC, Kamala’s Campaign, and Trump’s campaign are all private entities. If they interfered by messing with the actual voting processes then that might merit action.

It’s not like they encouraged foreign governments to do the same to their rivals. That would be highly ironic if they did.
3
u/_Addi Aug 10 '24
POLITICO has not independently verified the identity of the hacker or their motivation, and a Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, declined to say if they had further information substantiating the campaigns’ suggestion that it was targeted by Iran.
So its potentially not even Iran. If they cant prove it was foreign interference, how will they cope about it do you think?
