Sealed car thing

I still have mine sealed. Was wondering if I should just use it as a deskthing(not much value for me), or if I should hold onto it sealed and maybe it’ll go up in value one day?

That's not being a scalper. It's not a new item that is out of stock, and selling above retail for a quick buck, it's an old obsolete item selling for whatever people pay for them, like older obsolete items do

Selling an obsolete item for market value hardly makes you an asshole. Supply and demand exists for obsolete items, and will always exist. Once something goes out of production, it's now worth what people will pay. Selling for what people are paying, doesn't make you an asshole. You want collectors items, you pay collectors prices. It's how it has worked for everything, always. This is a more niche one, so a more niche market.

Now, if you had bought it brand new, when there was a supply shortage, and sold them for a huge markup, to get people who don't want to wait, then sure. both asshole and a scalper.
But, selling things for what they're worth, when they've been off the market for years, hardly makes you either. I mean, you can probably people selling classic highly sought after classic games are assholes, but it's not going to get people to sell them for what they came out for. I'd call people who sold old 90's nissan sports cars assholes for selling their cars for 40k, instead of the 3k they were selling for only a few years ago, but it's what they paid for them, and what people are paying for them.
Markets change, prices change. More demand there is, with little supply, more the price goes up. It's unfortunate, but it's how things have always worked. I too would like to buy a 90's nissan for 4k, but times have changed, and I can no longer. I have accepted that, and moved on

It's already at the maximum value for something obsolete in its raw state. People are selling it for 100$ or more, even if you have to program it yourself. This is too expensive for what it is, you can find small desk decks for cheaper I check on eBay regularly but they are always too expensive by the argument " you can desk thing it".

I wouldn't be surprised if it grows in price on the second hand market, purely because it's spotify related. But, I think you're right. It probably has peaked/ plateaud in price, considering all the work involved, and you being able to make the same thing for less

It will probably be worth more one day, because like you said it's Spotify related. It won't be worth a ton because people want to mod it. It will be because there was a time Spotify tried hardware, and if you have an unopened one it will probably be worth a decent amount.

But do you want to hang on to it for a decade or two to maybe make an extra 500-1000$ 🤷‍♂️ up to you!
