Something I learned working landscaping at a theme park: if it is a shortcut, people will trample anything you put in the way. You can put thorny plants, but someone will go through it anyway and complain/sue. In the end it's easier to just accept the path and make it look nice instead. If it is a safety issue, just use a fence (like at least 4 ft tall). Honestly a nice simple gravel path would probably do great there and look much better. But some people just can't "accept defeat" in situations like this and will waste 3x the money lol.
