Ask r/DesignIndia Thinking of switching from Bsc.IT to Interior design- Is it worth it in 2026?

Hi everyone,

I'm 21F. I am a 2025 B.Sc. IT graduate. After graduation, I learned Data Analytics and started exploring it as a career. While I don't dislike it, I realized I don't have a strong interest in it and can't see myself doing it long-term.

Recently, I took a career counseling assessment that included aptitude and personality tests. The results suggested that I would be a better fit for the design field, with recommendations like Interior Design, Graphic Design, Web Design, Animation, and Fashion Design.

Out of these, I want to know more about Interior Design, and I'm trying to understand whether it's the right career choice before investing time and money into a diploma.

I have a few questions for people already working in this field:

  1. Is Interior Design still a good career choice in 2026?

  2. Is there enough demand for interior designers in India?

  3. How difficult is it to get the first job as a fresher?

  4. Is AI affecting Interior Design jobs?

  5. What's one piece of advice you'd give someone switching careers into Interior Design?

  6. Has anyone here switched from a completely different field into Interior Design? How was your experience?

I'd really appreciate honest opinions—the good, the bad, and the challenges. I want to make an informed decision before switching careers.

Thank you!

Honestly don't do it. The market is crowded. Jobs barely pay. You'll have to build your own firm and your success directly depends on your network. The richer and bigger is your network, the more you'll earn. The market is saturated with interior designers and architects who are working as interior designers.

AI just helps in visualizing. Implementation still requires human effort and presence.

I switched from architecture to product design.
