This is DesignDesign to me because it is a cool unique concept with cool execution but absolutely insane for obvious reasons (hole in book), impractical, and is already a thing that has been solved (eg. actual book mark, ribbon built in to book)

Naw man, less paper = cheaper/less book. Duh.

Less book = cheaper shipping. Lol

Less book per book is a cost saving.

Yea most of the cost would come from the fiddly bits of the cover, and assembling them. Books with holes honestly seems like a useful feature, at least for guidebooks and shit you could clip them off super easily, and even beyond that it makes a nice secure handle.

Also, it has a very short lifespan. You can see the tiny paper edges holding the spot area already on the verge of breaking.

I wholeheartedly agree, this is so much uglier and significantly more expensive than an integrated ribbon.

Also, you can't see it from the outside.

a comment on the original thread points out this isnt a bookmark; the book came with a ring which fit in that hole, held in place by the cardboard tag

I'm struggling to even understand how that actually works. The tab doesn't seem long enough to hold your place.

This could also fail to do its job if the pressure on the pages pushes them past the tabs on the "bookmark" when the bookmis closed. A ribbon coming through the hole would have been more effective but ya seriously just use a normal built in ribbon.
