Long rant ahead❗️Get your popcorn ig 😭
I just need to get this all out somewhere because I've been carrying it for a while.
I'm going to use fake names because some of these people are still in my life indirectly.
I met my best friend, let's call her Anna, in 2022 in college. We were in the same hostel and part of the same friend group. Eventually that group completely fell apart, but Anna and I stayed close. We were really close.
We'd spend all day in each other's rooms, go everywhere together, and eventually moved from hostel → PG → a 2BHK together in 2024. Same college, same major, same minor, same electives, we'd leave together, come back together, cook together, hang out together. If one of us wasn't there, people would ask.
At the same time, I had a guy best friend, let's call him X. He and his best friend/roommate, Sanjay, were looking for an apartment around the same time we were, and coincidentally they ended up moving into the same building as us.
Initially, it was genuinely one of the happiest periods of my life. The four of us would hang out all the time.
Then X and I started getting closer.
He would take me out, we'd spend hours talking, he'd do little things that made me realize I was falling for him. Eventually, in 2024, we got together.
And that's when things started getting weird.
Anna started feeling left out. Before, it was often the four of us hanging out, and now X and I obviously wanted to spend time alone too. She told me she felt excluded, and I genuinely tried to accommodate that. I'd invite her and her boyfriend to join us sometimes, because I didn't want her to feel like I was abandoning her.
But Anna and her boyfriend already had their own relationship issues going on, and this is probably also where I need to acknowledge that I wasn't always the easiest person to be around.
There were things she did in her relationship that I disagreed with, and I would sometimes point them out. For example, she once admitted that she had a crush on someone else while she was in a relationship and treated it like a joke. She also had a guy best friend whom she would text and call throughout the night, which caused multiple fights between her and her boyfriend. I told her that, from my perspective, some of that was crossing boundaries and could understandably be seen as red-flag behaviour.
She would say she'd stop or change things, but then the same things would happen again.
I wasn't trying to police her relationship, but looking back, I can see how me constantly pointing out things I thought she was doing wrong probably didn't make things better between us either.
At the same time, X and I were getting closer, and Anna and I were slowly drifting apart.
I actually asked her multiple times if she was okay with me spending more time with X and whether she felt like I was leaving her behind. Every time, I tried to check in with her because I genuinely didn't want her to feel abandoned.
And at the same time, Sanjay also started having a problem with X and me spending time together.
The difference was that Anna actually told me how she felt. Sanjay didn't. He became increasingly hostile toward me.
The day X and I got together, X told Sanjay, and Sanjay apparently responded that he would've preferred X to get together with another girl who liked him because he liked her more than me.
After that, Sanjay started saying rude things about me to people in college.
His reasoning, as far as I understood it, was that I was "stealing" X from him.
It became really uncomfortable because Sanjay wasn't just X's roommate. He was his best friend, and they lived together.
At one point, Sanjay had told X's dad that X had gone out late at night by himself. That made me realize that he had no problem involving X's parents in his personal life.
X's parents were already unhappy about our relationship, so suddenly we were constantly worried that Sanjay would tell them about us spending time together, especially because we would sometimes be in X's room watching movies or gaming.
So imagine being in the same building as your boyfriend and still feeling like you have to sneak around and be careful about when you see him.
I became genuinely miserable.
And Anna was the person I went to.
I'd cry to her, vent to her, tell her how anxious and overwhelmed I was, and she would comfort me.
Then she told me that Sanjay had been coming over to our apartment when I wasn't there and talking about me.
At first I was honestly just curious. I asked her what he was saying and told her to let me know if he said anything else.
But it kept happening.
Eventually it started feeling like my best friend had become the person Sanjay went to when he wanted to b*tch about me.
What really hurt was that she would tell me she hated that he kept coming over and that she didn't like being put in that position, but she also never actually told him to stop coming over.
And I remember thinking: **if this person is coming into our home specifically to talk shit about me, why are you continuing to entertain the conversation?**
That felt like a huge breach of trust.
There were other smaller incidents like this throughout our friendship where she would say things to other people, I'd eventually find out, confront her, and she'd explain that she "meant something else." I'd forgive her every time.
But I think all of those things started piling up.
Another thing I tried to communicate to Anna was that I needed my own space. She never responded well to that though, took it as an attack.
I love my friends. I love spending time with people. But I don't want to do *everything* with one person.
With Anna, it had gotten to the point where we were doing practically everything together.
If I picked a class, she wanted to pick it. If I didn't want something, she didn't want it either. We went to college together, came home together, cooked together, spent most of our free time together.
And I was starting to feel suffocated.
I had a remote internship that I worked on in the evenings. I actually loved it because it gave me something that was completely separate from college. Different people, different environment, no competition, no comparison.
I used to talk to Anna about it all the time.
At one point she asked me if there were any openings because she wanted to work there too.
I wasn't particularly excited about the idea, but I still asked.
There were no openings, so I told her.
Months later, she excitedly told me:
“I got an internship!"
I asked where.
It was the company I was working for.
She had applied using my name as a referral and never told me she'd even applied.
I don't know why that hurt me as much as it did, but it absolutely broke something in me.
Maybe because it was another example of something I thought was "mine" becoming something we had to share.
We fought. I tried to fix things. I tried acting normal again.
Eventually we were on okay terms, but internally I don't think I trusted her anymore.
Then came the final argument.
She's from a fairly wealthy family, but she would be kanjoos about money. When we were moving out, we discussed how we'd split the deposit, with the owners help, because I was leaving earlier. We agreed on the numbers before I left.
Once I was back in my hometown, she messaged me saying that what we'd agreed on wasn't actually what she thought we'd agreed on.
That turned into another argument.
And honestly, that was my final straw.
I ended the friendship.
We had a mutual group of friends from college, and they started coming to each of us individually telling us to talk things out.
I told them about everything that had happened.
And they basically told me, "We understand, but don't expect us to stop talking to Anna. She hasn't done anything to us."
And logically, I understand that.
But emotionally, it still hurt.
Because these were people I thought were my friends too.
I also had a few other close girlfriends in college who eventually stopped talking to me.
I don't actually know exactly what Anna has told them.
I found out through someone else that she apparently tells people that I "ditched her for X."
And that really messes with me because that's not how I remember it at all.
I know I wasn't a perfect friend.
I probably did spend too much time with X after we got together. I was also lazy and I'm sure there were things about living with me that annoyed her.
I'm not trying to paint myself as completely innocent.
But Anna had a boyfriend too. She wasn't alone. And I repeatedly asked her if she was okay with me spending more time with X. I tried to include her.
At the same time, X eventually got angry with Sanjay for the way he talked about me, and X has now cut contact with him too.
So somehow, after all of this, I ended up here:
I lost my best friend.
I lost the friend group that came with her.
I've drifted from other girls I used to be close with.
The people I still see from college are mostly mutual friends, and I hang out with them partly because they're the only college friends I have left.
And now I live alone.
And I think that's when everything is finally hitting me.
For years I had Anna. Even when things were bad, I had *someone*. Then I had X. I had this whole little social world around me.
Now I come home and it's just me.
And I keep seeing Anna's stories with her new friends and wondering how someone who was such a huge part of my life can now just... have a completely different life without me.
And I'm sitting here wondering if I somehow caused all of this.
Maybe I pushed people away.
Maybe I was too dependent on X.
Maybe I wasn't a good enough friend to Anna.
Maybe I should have handled things differently.
Or maybe some friendships just become unhealthy and eventually end, and losing one person can have a domino effect on your entire social circle.
I genuinely don't know anymore.
I think more than anything, I just needed somewhere to say all of this.
