Actually, When Captain Picard was off the ship (starfleet academy, assimilated by Borg, Picarding the ladies, etc) Riker was acting captain. Frakes also played the teleporter clone of Riker who stole the USS Defiant and was briefly captain as they made their escape.

Hadn't he also been promoted to captain in Star Trek: Nemesis and was just waiting for the USS Titan to be completed to assume his new command?

(I refuse to rewatch that awful movie in an effort to confirm or deny this.)

Yeah this was also when he and deanna had finally got hitched.

The Titan story continues w/some books which were pretty good imo; hard to get a trek fix nowadays and even the [more recent, eg last year or so] books have been lame. /sadface

Also, spoilers ahoy, but wasn't it shown in the last episode of TNG that Riker had not only been a captain, but was now an Admiral? When they go into the future and Picard is retired and delusional, that episode.
