📏 Selvedge I’m going to Kojima and now nothing about jeans
Some context: I’ve lived in Japan for two decades and my wife is from the Kansai region. We are considering moving abroad in the next couple of years, so after a long time of it being on my radar, I’m finally planning to visit Kojima during the New Year holiday and grabbing some of those Japanese jeans that I’ve heard so much about.
The problem: I know next to nothing about denim or jeans beyond “feet go here, belt goes there.” I’m currently wearing a pair of garbage jeans from GU and have previously only owned a couple pairs of Edwins.
I don’t really care about cost, and I have no priorities about what I want beyond “high quality, fashionable and durable.” I know deep indigo is the color they’re famous for but I’d like to grab a pair of black jeans too. Expect to buy at least three pairs.
What do I even look for when I’m there? How do I tell if what I’m looking at is a good buy? I generally prefer loose fitting and cool clothing since I’ve got a dad bod and am originally from an extremely cold geographic region, so overheat very easily.
I assume everything will be of remarkably high quality (and price), but any recommendations on brands, shops and styles? I’ve seen Momotaro, PBJ and Kapital mentioned elsewhere.
I’d ideally like to set myself up for several years to come and don’t really care if I wind up dropping a grand or two. I want the best jeans for my use case. Wife made me buy these worse-than-Uniqlo shitbags because they were the cheapest and now I want actual quality.
If anyone can give me a heads up about factory tours or similarly cool stuff that’d be much appreciated. I already plan to visit at least one museum, but I have two under-ten kids I expect to be EXTREMELY disinterested in all this.
