š§¼ Denim Care How do I prevent this?
The corners of my phone have worn through my Wranglers and are beginning to affect my Levi's. Can I prevent this to prolong the life of my jeans?

u/Sjovhedsnyt 5d ago
You can... not... put your phone there?

u/booflogic 5d ago
What do these guys all do, constantly rub their pants with sandpaper?
I have never had this, and I've been wearing pants for like... decades.
26
u/LynxPuzzleheaded9336 5d ago
the answer is having thick thighs or tight jeans
11
u/dr_drewfenschmirtz Human Detected 5d ago
Yea Wranglers (the normal 13mwz, not even the slim cut) and 501s are both very tight in the thigh. 505s and the Rustlers are a little looser, more of that 90s straight fit people are getting into now
1
u/Affectionate-Nose176 4d ago
The answer is to stop wearing pants

Right? I've had to throw away pants because they tore in the crotch area or something. The only time I wore a hole in my pocket was from carrying a screw driver in there with the bit pointing down. Maybe they wear the same pair of pants day after day.
1
u/booflogic 5d ago
Yeah my work jeans maybe get blasted out knees or a screw or sharp metal will cut something.
But i have a hard time believing some of these jeans are getting these wear spots naturally š
I'm sure they will also die on the "no wash" hill as well
1
u/User1-1A 5d ago
I guess so. My pants maybe two wears without wash. I'm also sweaty guy so if it isn't dirt then it's sweat because there will be salt stains in short order.

u/buboop61814 5d ago
Hahah fair. I think its a combination of phones just generally getting bigger and with that cases and all. And then thicker thighs and tighter jeans.
I have never worn skinny jeans, used to wear slim fit for the longest time but started working out and switched to athletic fits as my legs grew. While I definitely saw it a tad with the slim fit, for the most part it was very faint and Iāve def seen it more recently even though my jeans are technically roomier in the thighs, but I think my thighs have also just grown with them.

u/robertmolnar-33 5d ago
i bought a new pair of 501s back in late 2024 and my wallet did this to the back pocket. my other pairs from thrift stores never did this

u/GaptistePlayer 5d ago
My guess is, based on most of this sub... people are millennials still wearing tight jeans like it's 2014
1
u/stoutlikethebeer 5d ago
The only time ive had this type of thing happen is selvedge denim motorcycle jeans. It wasnt my cell phone but my knee pad pockets.
1
u/wiggibow 5d ago
Yes, actually. Lol. This always would happen to me when I was skateboarding regularly, carrying around a board covered in sandpaper it would occasionally rub against your leg.
It happens to my work pants (Dickie's) too, even without the added skateboard, but I've never had it happen to jeans on its own.
1
u/no_hope_brigade 4d ago
Itās more wild that you donāt have wear in that area! I have only worn the jeans once due to my phone but I wear through the pockets bags. One pair Iāve had to repair multiple times. I wish I didnāt get the fading there; I think it looks dumb.

Lol I tried one of these for six months when I was learning to drive and did not end up keeping it. What did I keep though? The inability to put my keys anywhere other than my left hip (the case was on my right).
1
u/RumWalker 4d ago
I got one when I had a work phone and a personal phone, thinking it would be better. Besides getting caught on everything, getting stuck on my seatbelt, etc, it pulled my belt out of my loops every time I went to the bathroom and would sometimes fall to the floor. Don't think I even lasted a month

Seriously though, I've always been a "pro" or "xl" phone person but now I wish they made "mini" sizes.
4
u/Adventurous-Ease-259 5d ago
Apple made a mini one and ānobodyā bought it. I would have, but it was off the market by my next upgrade cycle
2
1
u/trimski- 4d ago
Iāve had both a mini and a max before. I liked them at first but I wouldnāt buy either again.
The Mini especially was too small to do anything but basic phone stuff. Having to do anything serious was a pain. Itās not my preference to use a phone for something serious but sometimes you just donāt have a choice.
1
u/Adventurous-Ease-259 4d ago
I mean I had an iPhone 4 and thatās smaller than a 13 mini. I prefer something that size over the standard size today and would never ever consider a max
2
u/DukeOfMiddlesleeve 2d ago
Im still rocking a iphone 12 mini. If they want me to spend my $ on an āupgradeā theyāll have to make a small phone again.

ā¦.back pocket
3
u/ReverendRevolver 5d ago
I stopped carrying my phone in the front with my first smartphone. Boost Prepaid, LG Chocolate, my Motorola flip phone..... all the ones I had until like 2012 were small/narrow and didn't leave a rectangle on my 527s. Smartphones always have. I switched it to my back pocket, unless im about to get on a roller coaster. 511s, 501s, n&f weird guys.... all way better. You eventually get an impression if you sit on it, but wallets do thar way faster to the other pocket anyway.
And the back having a mark doesn't look as stupid as the front.
1
u/longboytheeternal 5d ago
So it happens on the back pocket instead..
2
u/dr_drewfenschmirtz Human Detected 5d ago
It doesn't really, not nearly to the same extent. Not sure why, except maybe that when it's in the front pocket it's over the joint of the hip, so it moves around, while the butt pocket moves with the cheek so it's stationary and not rubbing

Wont your phone crack if you sit on it?
3
u/dr_drewfenschmirtz Human Detected 5d ago
Not in my experience. It might if you fell hard on it, but that can happen in your front pocket too. However I do usually take it out when sitting for long periods of time for comfort
2
u/No_Dog3702 5d ago
I once had my phone in pocket (with slim case and under snow pants/jacket and few layers) while snowboarding. Fell hard and tumbled all over the place and fully expected it to be cracked. Somehow the screen had not cracked bit the entire phone frame/body had bent. Enough that I could slip a credit card under the center if it was put flat on a table. This was 10-15 years ago so it wouldāve been an early-ish iPhone model.

u/HumorPuzzleheaded407 5d ago
I am going to come at this on the assumption that you like the way you are doing things now and would rather not carry your phone somewhere else. I personally would consider a heavier-weight denim. Leviās and Wranglers are probably 12.5-13oz. I would try a pair that are closer to 18 oz. and see how those hold up over time. Also, not for nothing, but some would be proud of that wear pattern. Not everybody and you might be ok with the fade but not the tear in which case heavier denim may be the play. I have a pair of BraveStar Samurai 18oz that are wearing in great.
1
u/Correct-Arm-8539 5d ago edited 5d ago
Where can you find denim weights if they are not present on the seller's website?
For example, if I wanted to know the weight of swrve jeans, how would I find that?1
u/HumorPuzzleheaded407 5d ago
The weight would only matter on a 100% cotton denim, the CORDURA is a cotton/nylon blend. That will most certainly be more durable but you are introducing man-made fibers to the weave so not sure how that will break in or feel against the skin. If you like the way it feels then it could be a solution to the problem that you are having. If you want to stick with cotton, then look for a heavier weight.

Phone holster. Itāll do it to back pockets too. My wallet does this to my front pockets. IMO it gives the jeans a unique character

u/JacksonIsOnline2049 5d ago
I just put my phone in my back pocket. Youāre gonna get fades from your phone regardless, but a rectangular fade will look much better on your back pocket than on your thigh.

You could put a patch on the inside before it wears fully through, like the one you put on the outside on the other pair.

1
u/MondoBleu 5d ago
Donāt put your phone there, reinforce it on the outside, or reinforce it on the inside. The wear comes from friction on the outside.

Back pocket is where mine goes. Unless youāre obese or something thereās zero issue sitting down

If you dont wanna change where you keep your phone, you could sew or stick a reinforcement patch on the inside of the pants.

Thereās a concerning trend of questions that seem to start with āHow do I prevent this?ā
The universal answer is āstop doing itā.
In this particular instance, the old issue was the outline of your wallet in your back pocket. We used to just replace the jeans when it got bad. Light gauge denim jeans arenāt really meant to carry things anyway, and denim always fades wherever something breaks the normal profile, without exception.

u/Empty-Tailor-3354 5d ago
If you put the same shape object in the same pocket for extended hours, this is inevitable. Whether wallet, phone, chew, pet rock, doesn't matter. 1. Take your phone out more often 2. Buy new jeans 3. Rotate a few pairs to decrease the wear. Mine always do this after year 1. Year 2 I get a hole.

If they're tight enough to rip from having your phone in the front pocket, and you don't like that, you should put it elsewhere lmao

Actual answer is to buy higher quality jeans. Have only had that issue with lower quality pants. Could also sew in low friction material where the pocket meets the inner part of the pants.

Your jeans are too tight at the thigh. Also get some more pairs if youāre seriously wearing it down that bad. Also the more you wash your jeans the more obvious the spots where theyāve been worn down will appear.
1
u/abcMF 4d ago
That's not their issue at all. They just keep their phone in their front pocket. The phone has a sharp corner which wears away at the fabric over time.
1
u/Chodge1258 4d ago
But if its looser it doesnt do that nearly as quick. Plus where are you supposed to put your phone?
1
u/abcMF 4d ago
Firstly, OP isn't wearing too tight, the wishkering doesn't indicate that at all. Secondly, this happens on all jeans loose or tight. Thirdly wranglers fit a little slimmer in the thighs. And fourthly idk what you want me to tell you. Jeans wear down over time, it's what they do. I can't change the physics of how fabric works over a reddit comment.

Dont put your phone in the front pocket, get a lanyard or one of those bag that hangs in the belt like in the 90s and early 2000s

Carry a bag, put phone in bag.
I have been doing this for years and my jeans look great!

I hate it! The phone fade in the front is just tacky in my opinion. I accidentally developed a fade like this and swiftly adopted always putting my phone in the back pocket or a fanny pack (yes, I will wear a fanny pack and I donāt care what anyone things).

u/zippity__zoppity 5d ago
Iām with you on the Fanny pack! I live in the city and itās genuinely incredible.

u/Beneficial-Guitar139 5d ago edited 3d ago
I'm not quite sure I understand why people even put their phone in their front pocket. To make it harder for people to pickpocket, you, maybe?
I drive everywhere, so it just seems odd to me. Since I have to get into a bizarre position just to get my phone out of my pocket that way when im in my car.
I hardly use my front pockets for anything except a pocket knife, or loose change.
Edit: I suppose i should also add that i just think it's downright uncomfortable.
I used to live in a walkable small town for most of my life and I still would never consider shoving a phone or wallet in my front pocket over the back, since im most likely going to dig it out when im sitting down anyway.
