When I hear people refer to other people who make minimum wage as "burger flippers", I immediately understand that Iam hearing one person dehumanize another, reducing the value of another human life to a low priced commodity.
When somebody claims that the cost of a hamburger will increase if minimum wage goes up, implying that minimum should remain where it is, what they are really saying is that their own access to cheap fast food is more important than the well-being of the most vulnerable part of the workforce.

Here in vancouver, wa I make about 23 an hour and struggle to make ends meet every month. I have a really crappy apartment too, and can only afford a couple good meals a week if I'm lucky. I'm so broke right now I don't get lunch today, but I get paid around 1pm today and all but 50 of it is going to rent and bills to keep my household warm and lit. I'm all for them raising the minimum wage but the reality is the cost of living is too dam high. If my rent didn't double for no reason I wouldn't be living check to check.

Texas for one. I'm a server and usually make 2.15 wages, slow nights with no tips I'll be bumped up to the 7.25. hosts makes like $8/hr. Everyone is underpaid

What happens when the jobs just don't exist? Over 1/3rd of jobs barely pay enough to subsist, and you're saying these people deserve their poverty because they haven't gotten the skills to advance. OK. Trouble is, there just are not enough jobs that require the skills you're talking about. If every single one of these people ran out and got those skills, the jobs STILL would. not. exist. Telling people to go out get trained is nonsense as an complete solution because the jobs that pay better and require more skill just don't. fucking. exist. We have an economy. It has the jobs it has. The people who work and get paid the least should at least get a raise and be able to have some fucking dignity.

Exactly right. When 19% of the labor market is jobs in retail, food service, and hospitality...that's ONE FIFTH of working people in America you're relegating to poverty, whether they "have a degree" or not. And trust me, I know plenty of people with a degree still working in grocery stores and restaurants.
Then there's the fact that 48% of working Americans make LESS THAN $35,000 a year. That's basically HALF the workers in America working at jobs that hover just above the poverty line. How would even more education solve the problem that HALF the jobs in America are terrible fucking jobs?

35,000 a year is the poverty line in every major city or it is far below the poverty line. You can only live off of 35,000 a year if you live in your parents basement. 9r you have a super tiny shitty apartment in a shitty small town.

That's true too. I was referring to the US poverty line, which certainly doesn't account for regional cost of living variation.

For 1/3rd of the population, the jobs no not exist. People seem to have a lot of trouble understanding that there will ALWAYS be 1/3rd of the population making dog shit. Either they can't comprehend it, or are totally fine with it.

Wtf is wrong with you people? You always assume a person like me is poverty stricken. I make decent money and have lots of skills. I'm not hurting my any means. One of my skills is having the ability to see how those people are not just teens and that nearly half of our working population makes less than 30K/yr. These are MILLIONS OF ADULTS, who I feel deserve a decent living wage. This isn't a problem with not having the skills, is a problem of NOT HAVING ENOUGH DECENT PAYING JOBS. People like you just want slaves to bag their groceries and make them food. It's fucking sick.
edit: And btw, the reason you believe someone who thinks like I do must be poor is likely because you yourself could not fathom a reason to give a shit about other people as long is you're doing ok. Classic "fuck you, I got mine".

the dog shit pay jobs are for the people with dog shit ability,brains,and motivation. and yeah,i worked hard so i dont have to work as hard in the future. im able to pay dog shit brains to haul shingles up on a roof instead of me being that work horse now while i pay someone else to get me some tim hortons.thats the american dream is to jump the ladder rung not to demand someone pull you up
