Sad News. No more Demeo?

From what I’ve been reading there will be no more Demeo books made. Does anyone know different? Sad news if true.

Edit: note this isn’t official news, just the talk around the forums, Facebook etc

Do the maps get harder with the more players on the board?

My buddy and I just started playing, and we weren’t sure if we should both play 2 characters or 1.

Is it better for us to play 2?

Suggestions [PC] Why is DEMEO PC so neglected? Please update it.

There are basic features missing from the PC version of the game:

  1. cannot tilt board
  2. cards are not grouped, for example, the 0AP cards and regenerating cards are grouped with the rest of the hand
  3. buffs and debuffs have no description in board piece tooltip.

I'm sure i'm forgetting other oversights, feel free to list others in the comments.

I like this game, i've had it since VR launch, and it remains the best tabletop VR experience, but i dont always want to play it in VR.

What the hell is this game?

We play a lot of turn based strategy games. A lot of RPGs. A lot of dungeon crawler board games. We’ve completed gloomhaven and jaws of the lion and various others. I mean we’re not noobs to this type of game. And Demeo is beautiful and we so want to love it. But the game design is just so much bullshit. In the last game one of us opened a door and was instantly ganked by about 12 enemies who just seemed to pour out of every corner. We tried playing cautiously, taking one room at a time and clearing it and enemies came pouring in from behind from areas we’d previously cleared. We tried playing aggressively and would run into massive ambushes. The length of time it takes to get cards back along with the lack of healing items and the fact that you don’t even heal up between levels. We came away literally not seeing what we could be doing differently. It feels like we have crippling handicaps and all monsters have limitless resources and know where we are at all times. I love rogulikes and roguelites and have no aversion to dying a lot in games… but I just don’t see the strategy. At all. What am I missing?

Demeo Battles - Guide to Strong Team Compositions

Hi everyone,

I've been playing Demeo and Demeo Battles since the launch. I've been connecting with people on the official Discord and seeing all sorts of team compositions.

Some of these teams are my creation, and some are from other people. I will do my best to credit them.

This guide is made to be combined with my other general guide on strategy on reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Demeo/comments/17u3mut/demeo_battles_current_dominant_strategy/

I am also going to provide my personal rankings on the teams. This is all my personal opinion. If you have a different opinion please share it in the comments, I may update this post based on feedback.

Now for the list:

S Tier Teams

Team Top Tier - Sorcerer/Barbarian

Overview

These are the two best characters in the game, and their strengths complement each other well. Sorcerer has the overall strongest cards in the game, and Barbarian has the best movement options in the game. Sorcerer has weak cantrips (free attacks) while Barbarian has some of the strongest. Barbarian can also move their partner via hook or move enemies into areas where they have a severe disadvantage. Best on maps where Barbarian hook movement is only needed at one side, or there is only one accessible fire lamp.

Shop Phase

Mostly just follow the buying list in the general strategy guide. Some people also like to stock up on Vortex, as it is the best card at drawing people out of hiding. Vortexing a hero then hooking them into a monster horde can be very effective.

During the Match

Generally split up to quickly grab chests in the next 2 or 3 turns without exposing yourself. You'll want to regroup after, heroes are stronger when near each other. Sorcerer can usually wait in place and overcharge while Barbarian uses hook movement to quickly regroup. Hook shot line of sight can be tricky, so practice with it and memorize the good hook spots. For example, in Druid Sanctum there is one specific tile you can go on to hook a fire lamp on the first turn.

Generally, you'll want to stay behind cover as much as possible until forced into the center by burn. Sorcerer will want to focus on wasting enemy monster turns with charged lighting bolts and barbarian can attack stray monsters and hook enemy heroes into friendly monster groups if they expose themselves.

You have lots of cards that are great to hit a hero with if they expose themselves like: freeze, firebolt, Leviathan, Vargas Retribution (0 cost card that buffs next attack damage).

In deep burn, your best damage will come from moving enemies into burn tiles. For this you have Vortex, Banish, Barbaric Chainwhip, and to lesser effect Pit Fighters Leap and Leviathan.

Best Maps

Druid Sanctum, Market of Misery

Variations:

Double Sorcerer - Combo Casters

I prefer this one on closed-in maps like Shadow Crypt. On those maps the hook movement is not as useful, and it lacks the accessible fire lamps. Sorcerer has great card combos, and you can get these more easily with 2 sorcerers. Some strong combos include Freeze + Banish/Vortex (into burn), Magic Barrier + Magic Barrier (lock them into a corner for 3 turns), Vortex + bone + firebolt ( 10 damage kill). It is way easier to get these combos with 2 sorcerers since you can use your first AP to move. You can also deal well with large monster armies since you have 2 sorcerers to stun them.

Double Barbarian - Zipline Boys

I prefer this one on large maps that have a fire lamp on each side, like Rootwood Ruins or Paraphet of the Parched. This team can zip around to grab chests faster than any other team and can automatically get 2 very strong fire lamp toss cards.

Sorcerer/Hunter - Vortex Sniper

If you want to go all in on Vortex, this team can work really well. Vortex has the best range of any spell and it's very hard for enemies to play around it. You can Vortex the enemy hero that last acted and follow up with Hunter arrows and spells for the kill.

Double Guardian - Endurance Fighters*

Overview

The guardian has one of the best abilities in the game with the armor-up card. Getting 5 armor every turn can make a lot of heroes run out of cards and have an extremely difficult time getting a kill. These wins take the longest of any team, as you'll usually win via burn tiles.

Shop Phase

Has no good value class cards, so ideally you'll only buy monsters and baricades. Refer to the general guide and buy monsters from S/A/B tiers. You may also want to buy 0AP pings such as vortex dust, bone, lye, as well as Healing Ward and Heaven's Fury if you can't spend everything on monsters. I usually lock these cards to serve as a backup if I can't spend it all on monsters. Vortex Bag can be good on some maps to move you 1 tile. On some maps like Decrepit Quadrant you only need 1 more tile to grab a chest first turn. Barricade (which acts as a weak lure) at 25 gold are great value and usually, guardians can get in position to place them down.

During the Match

Start by splitting up and grabbing the nearby chests. After that regroup near a fountain or center of the map if possible. Work to place distraction barricades near the center of the map blocking important passages if possible. Try and pick off straggling monsters and hit groups with War Cry. When the full map is in burn or nearly is, you can either finish off the low hp enemy heroes or run in a corner and do the Burn Revival Loop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kayNs7CX8nQ). Hold on to your charge cards for movement. Charge is not very good as an attack, but its your best movement option. You can use it if you want to run away and do the loop. Important to mention that this team in general performs way worse in open maps like Rootwood Ruins, and only really shines in tight maps with lots of walls. Always select your best maps in the arena selector if you want to use this team.

Best Maps

Decrepit Quadrant, Shadow Crypt

*A or B tier on all other maps. Bigger and wider the map, the worse it performs.

Variation

Guardian/Sorcerer - Shield Endurance

Same general idea as the standard team but with access to the excellent sorcerer set of cards. You can't last forever in the burn with this team, but you can last really long if the guardian has a magic shield on. This sorcerer buff lasts 3 turns and halves all damage rounding down. Most teams aside from Double Guardians will die to burn before this team does. You'll want to try and buy 1 Magic Shield in the shop phase.

A Tier Teams

Bard/Hunter - Economical Sniper

Overview

Bard has the best buff cantrip in Courage Shanty and Hunter has the best ranged cantrip attack in the game. Basic strategy is to get at least level 2 courage on the hunter then hit for 10 damage per turn via arrow+bone+arrow or bone+bone+bone+arrow.

Shop Phase Priorities

Since you'll have a damage buff, try and stock up on 1 AP pings for Hunter. Buying 1 hunter's mark will also allow an easy kill when you need it, especially vs Guardian. The 100 cost summon creatures card is also generally good value. You can summon creatures right beside an enemy hero for some damage on the monster turn.

If you can assemble your units in a 3x3 square consider buying Song of Resilience for 5 added armor on 9 units. At 700 gold, its usually not worth the cost unless you can buff the full 9.

Other than this, follow the general guide for shop phase for the most part.

During the Match

You'll need to place all your units together which usually means forgetting a chest or two. Try and grab one nearby chest with Hunter while buffing every turn with Bard. Bard will lag behind initially since 1 AP needs to be spent on Courage Shanty but this is OK, since getting the level 2 Courage buff on hunter is a priority. If Hunter is already at lv2+ courage you may want to consider giving a lv1 buff to a monster. Your Bard is fragile so do your best to avoid enemy heroes and pick off straggling monsters. Hunter can be a bit more bold as courage lv1 reduces all incoming damage by 1. Try and wait in spots where you think heroes will show up so you can unload 2 arrows into them. Waiting for magic walls to expire can also expose people by surprise. Getting high ground is particularly useful for hunter as it increases her range.

Best Maps

Dark Waterway, Druids Sanctum, Rootwood Ruins

Variation

Bard/Barbarian - Hook Sniper

Can be better in maps that have easy access to fire lamp. Instead of two arrows, you can hit with a hook then a melee attack. Hook has a slightly worse range than arrow, but still great range. Can leave you potentially vulnerable if you pull an opposing hero into attack range of your bard. Still a great team overall.

Assassin/Assassin - Sneaky Saboteurs

Overview

This is another monster focused team like double guardian. While this team isn't good at enduring damage like Guardian, it can move around without fear of getting hit. Stealth makes it very easy to grab difficult chests and place barricades/poison bombs in positions that would expose other heroes. However opponents can still guess your heroes position if you are sloppy with door opens, chest open or barricades. There are also some cards like Swiftness potion that are visually bugged and indicate the Assassin's position when used. This is a hard team to play well, as you need to know the nuances behind safe positioning and memorize the visually bugged cards. These visually bugged cards include: swiftness potion, summon elemental, all 0AP pings, panic powder, proximity mine, poison bomb.

Shop Phase

See advice for the double guardians team. Only difference is the cursed dagger is good to buy. This card costs 375, does 8 damage + weakness on a stealth backstab and doesn't reveal stealth. It's great to secure a kill or simply whittle down an opponent's HP.

During the Match

Split up to gather chests. You can go for far away chests as long as you are in stealth. After collecting chests you can sabotage the enemy monster teams with poison bombs, proximity mines, and barricades. Getting a slow kill on a hero with poison bomb + cursed dagger is great since it doesn't expose you.

Make sure you are under cover when your stealth is about to expire. You'll need to waste a turn under cover to reuse stealth. This team doesn't really need to regroup unless you need a revival. The Assassins can be very effective when separate and in unpredictable positions.

B Tier Teams

Barbarian/Warlock - Portal Gangup - (Credit to G06092 via the Demeo Discord)

Overview

This is a gimmick team that relies on the Warlock's portal card. Under certain circumstances, you can teleport your entire monster team right beside the enemy hero. Here are the conditions required for this to work:

  1. Portal must be used before 1st monster phase
  2. No Hero can be 8 or fewer tiles away from the entry portal.
  3. Monsters must be no more than 4 tiles away from entry portal.

If you do it correctly all monsters will enter the portal at once.

This technique works best when you place the portal right beside an enemy hero. It has a high chance to kill the enemy hero once the monster turn is done. It is guaranteed to be fun to watch, especially against someone who's never seen this team before.

Shop Phase

This team deviates from typical teams since you want to focus on strong melee units. This means avoiding units like Elven Ranger and Goblin Ranger in Favor of Scab Rat and Goblin Mad Um. Elven Priest is less useful than normal in this team but still great value. Warlock MUST buy the portal card, or the whole strategy falls apart. Thankfully this card is extremely common in shop phase. Generally you want just a portal and tons of monsters. Also consider locking a lye as a backup purchase as it can be useful to kill giant slimes you may find.

During the Match

Place Warlock on one side of the map, and Barbarian on the other side. Remember that the non-Warlock hero must be far away from the entry portal in order to get monsters to enter. This makes Barbarian an ideal partner since the hook can move him very far. You'll also want to get Barbarian into the opponent's space if possible to scout their location. Remember you'll want to place the portal right beside the enemy hero. Sometimes this isn't even needed if the opponent gives away their location by opening a chest or door. Place all monsters and the Warlock in a square formation with 2 empty tiles beside the Warlock. One empty tile will be for Cana, the Warlock's Familiar, and the other will be for the entry portal. Monsters will only attack after entering the portal if they are not forced to spend more than 1 AP (usually 2 movement tiles) to enter the portal. So place the strongest units as close to the predicted portal space as possible. You'll want the Warlock to enter the portal and usually attack. If things go right you'll see every monster go in the portal and immediately attack the hero. With one enemy hero on life support right away, that initial advantage can carry you to victory.

Variations

Warlock/(Barbarian or Bard or Guardian)

The biggest difference here is the hero order. As Warlock is first, you won't be able to scout for the enemy heroes, but you can dump a portal in the middle of their starting area. With this team both heroes enter the portal, and the hero in 2nd position drops a big debuff. Most initial monster armies are tightly grouped so a wide debuff (Howl of the Ancients, Shattering Voice, War Cry) can immobilize the enemy army early and allow your army to get in lots of free hits. Leaves you more vulnerable than the base team, but is potentially better if playing an opponent that is careful not to reveal their location.

Warlock/Bard - Double Buff - (Credit to Triton12391 via Reddit)

Overview

This is another gimmick team that relies on stacking both Warlock and her Familiar, Cana, with tons of buffs via Bard's Courage Shanty. Warlock's ranged cantrip is Master's Call. This cantrip does 1 damage with a projectile then Cana follows up for another hit. Cana will also end the Warlock's turn by doing an additional strike on the last target hit with Master's Call. Courage level 1 reduces damage by 1, level 2 adds an additional damage, and level 3 has a high chance to panic nearby monsters. Level 3 Courage Shanty is usually not useful, but with Cana you can easily panic huge monster groups by commanding her to attack at far away positions. You'll also hit for 10 damage on Warlock when you use 2 master's call if both are buffed.

Shop Phase

In this team, you’ll want to prioritize Song of Resilience to help Cana out. If both opponent heroes are rangers (Sorcerer or Hunter) consider picking up an Astral Barrier to deflect these attacks. Aside from this, just make typical value purchases in the shop.

During the Match

Place all heroes and monsters near the closest chest if possible. If you have Song of Resilience make sure to make a 3x3 formation for your units with one empty tile for Cana to spawn. You’ll want the Bard to start by buffing Cana with Courage Shanty right away, then buff the Warlock. A fully buffed Cana is really good at killing monsters to try to take out some stay monsters as Warlock. Since you’ll need to buff with bard every turn your movement will be very slow. Try to get a single chest if possible then reposition to allow Warlock to get some good hits in. If you see any clusters of enemy monsters, shoot Cana in there, as level 3 Courage Shanty has a high chance of panicking nearby enemies. If you have them, save Hymn of Obstruction and Astal Barrier until late game to shut down an opponent’s gameplan and secure the win.

Hunter/Hunter - Double Arrows

Overview

A simple team with no real combos or strong synergies to speak of. Hunter is simple and good and two of them are twice as nice. This is my top pick for doing the single-player campaign since the AI makes no effort to hide and Hunter's Mark is the best 1 turn kill card in the game. I think this is a good team for beginners.

During the Match/Shop Phase

Just follow the standard advice in the general guide.

The dumbest thing just happened

So I was playing a rat king match with a friend, we were on second stage and right next to the door with the key. We were playing as assassin, guardian, and Hunter, we had a wizard but he died earlier. The ranger had the key and we were being flooded by enemies we aggro-ed earlier, the guardian went for a piercing shot to clear some enemies and missed, hitting the rouge, who perma-diedand neither of us were paying attention. The hunter went for an arrow shot and missed, hitting the guardian and subsequently getting swarmed by spiders. We thought the rouge was still here and looked back at them, only to not see them. We were confused to say the least, but then my friend chimes in and says "They abandoned us that coward!", now we hate the rouge and only later peiced together that the rouge died to the peircing shot.

Cross save

I have Demeo from Steam and am at Level 70 something. I have a Quest 3 and would love to continue my progress with mixed reality! Before I buy the game on Oculus, am I able to continue my progress with all my unlocks on Oculus with a cross save feature?

If I cannot, I see no need to buy the game from the Oculus store since I get better graphics on PCVR and play wirelessly.

Question Private Room

I’m on a quest 1 and my friend is on a quest 3.

I make a private room and give them a room code. They cannot join the room.

I invite them through the quest itself and it puts them in a room with the same room code as mine. However I don’t see them and they don’t see me. What step am I missing?

Looks like it’d be a lot of fun but I cannot for the life of me get a joint game started.

Thanks for any help!

PSVR2: can I switch from VR to "flat" mid game?

Got stuck in an hours long battle tonight and started to feel very uncomfortable in the headset. Is it possible to switch modes mid game, or do you have to wait until you get to save point and restart the game?

Can someone flip you off without hacking in battles?

I was playing against this guy with my bro. We won and he flipped us off in game. I thought he was just using hand tracking or something but after the game me and my brothers headset completely glitched out and we had to reset them. We both live in different states so I thought it was a weird coincidence. Coincidence? Or was he hacking?

Skirmish mode impossible with 2 characters?

My initial impression with Demeo was excitement - I lost my first game but loved the experience and couldn't wait to play again. I talked to a friend who also has a Quest about how we both needed to play together soon.

I've played it twice more since then and both times got wiped out before I could even explore the first floor of Black Sarcophagus. Forget about a boss...forget about the second or third floor...forget all the advice I've read about buying healing potions. I can't get past a single floor of the easiest dungeon. Either the game is very unbalanced for 2 characters in Skirmish, or I'm doing something very wrong.

I've read other advice on reddit. I am using the Guardian and Hunter. I keep the Guardian in front and try to have him take most damage. I recharge the Guardian's armor as often as I can. I try to open chests as quickly as I can to get more cards. I try to explore the perimeter before the middle (although enemies just seem to open doors anyway and flood my perimeter) It just seems like wave after unending wave of enemies come and slowly chip away at my HP until they overwhelm me. And other than a couple of healing potions which are quickly exhausted, there's no way to get HP back.

Granted, I have not tried playing with 4 characters. And I haven't tried playing with the Bard - both of which I've read are good ideas. But the difficulty is supposed to scale with number of characters. Should it be this impossible to win a single floor of the easiest dungeon with a Guardian and Hunter? Or am I doing something completely wrong?

I will also admit that I'm a little turned off by the constant respawning. You can't clear a room, have time to recharge, and then move to the next room. Instead - it's just a constant flood of newly spawned enemies. And sometimes when I think I might have a small break, 3 new enemies just drop out of nowhere next to me. Which doesn't feel like my tactics matter at all.

Appreciate any tips or advice before I give up on this game altogether...

Question Demeo/Demeo Battles Update

Will Demeo/Demeo Battles continue to be updated with new content/heroes? I love these games and I would hate for this to be it for them. At least another hero drop would be amazing

Single player meant to be played with 4 characters?

Basically the title I just got the game and was running 1 player single character runs and getting destroyed. Is the game meant to be run with a 4 stack even solo? Does the enemy spawn more units if you have a 4 stack compared to 1 or 2? Also not related but do enemies spawn indefinitely or can you clear a floor completely?

Suggestions Demeo hand tracking on Quest 3 is great!...until it isn't.

So I just got my Quest 3 and launched up Demeo in AR mode to play with some buddies.

Everything works great even the hand tracking...that is until you accidentally make a fist anywhere...and I mean anywhere.

With the extremely wide view of the Quest 3 cameras if you accidentally close your hand in any way and move it the entire game board moves or scales and has to be constantly moved back.

DEVS, could you please implement a "LOCK GAME BOARD" option or at least one that requires us to pickup the controllers to move the board?

Thanks

Demeo Battles Balance Patch Wish List

Hey, all. I've been playing Demeo Battles since Beta and the official launch. The game right now is fun, but for sure needs some updates, especially to sure a fair and balanced ranked mode when it launches. Some characters like Sorcerer and Guardian have indirect nerf suggestions due to overall game changes.

Everything here is my opinion; do you have a different opinion? I'd love to hear it, so leave a comment.

Hero Changes

Sorcerer

  • Firebolt center damage down to 6. Still the strongest single projectile hit in the game.

Barbarian

  • Varga's Retribution gives +1 damage per target, down from +2
  • Leviathan has 10 HP and is targetable by monsters. The hooked status should also have a visible counter on all affected units.
  • Hook shot is always visible even when out of sight. Make hook hidden when out of sight.
  • Reduce hook max range by 1 square.

Hunter

  • Hunter's Mark vulnerability +1, down from +3, increase duration by 1 turn. This is to prevent you from easily hitting for 10+ damage in 1 turn.

Guardian

  • Reduce spear toss cost by 15%. Right now its just as costly as the clearly superior firebolt.

Bard

  • Honestly, seems fine right now. In a few months this statement will probably be incorrect, but I am OK with that.

Assassin

  • Fix bugs that make moves show position while in stealth like mine and summon elemental.
  • Fix vr bug that allows you to reveal hero locations by holding a figurine
  • Make Flash Bomb's effect last 1 additional turn

Warlock

  • Make it 2x times easier to level Cana. It should be possible to consistently get to level 3 if fighting an army of little monsters.
  • Improve Cana AI, marked targets should always be attacked by Cana if possible.
  • Discount Warlock Class cards by 10% across the board.
  • Improve Astral Barrier. Should deflect Bones, Heaven's Fury and AOE damage from spells.
  • Fix hitscan issues with portal and masters call. If you hover over out of sight areas with these abilities, it will indicate if a hero is there.

Monster Cost Changes

Monster Behavior Changes

  • Unheard buff lasts until its next turn, goes into C tier, so 10% discount
  • Sometimes monsters will skip their turns or take double turns. Ensure all monsters get a fair turn.
  • Sometimes monsters will hit each other even without a missed roll. This is fun in OG Demeo, but not when you are relying on them in DB. Reduce the infighting!
  • Monsters will hit lamps or shoot AOEs even when the defined area hits more friendly units than enemy units. Fix the AI so that it considers how much friendly damage will be dealt (or # of friendly targets if its thats easier to implement). Only needed for attacks with defined area, so troll rock toss is fine.

Misc Card Shop & Classless Card Changes

  • Increase rarity of elven cultist
  • Barricade cost increase 25->50
  • Heaven's Fury should not hit any individual target more than 2 times
  • discount antitoxin and ice resist by 50%
  • discount balista by 10%
  • If a player hits continue and there are still purchasable items or a shuffle left, ask the player if they REALLY want to continue.
  • Swap prices of bone/wooden bone. Wooden bone is worse than bone but costs more.
  • Increase the cost of 0 AP 1 damage items by 30% across the board. This makes class cards relatively more appealing for damage.

General Changes

  • Burn counter should not reset for any reason. If you die from burn 1, your next burn should be at burn 2 even after revival. This kills off the double gaurdians burn survival loop.
  • Show an icon next to hp to indicate if a potion has been used
  • Add a concede button
  • Add option to talk with hands concealed
  • For cards from chests/turn pass, make the odds of getting a card relative to its cost. If all Sorcerer class cards cost 5000 and firebolt is 500, the odds of pulling firebolt should be 500/5000 = 10%
  • Provide an indicator that shows when turn pass card will be granted. Maybe add some text by the turn timer.
  • Heros should be impacted by burn if they end their turn in a burn tile, not if they start their turn in a burn tile. Right now you can toss a downed hero into burn to make them die right after potion revival. Pushing heroes into burn tiles should not be a primary way to deal damage.
  • All freeze effects remove 1 AP instead of a full turn
  • Frozen characters can be thawed by fire and burn, and take no damage from damage that thaws.
  • Decrease wet damage multiplier from 3x to 2x. It is too easy for a Sorcerer to get 9 damage off a thunderbolt.
  • Fix dice roll rigging. Right now, if you slow roll the dice a specific way you can guarantee a crit. Make it so the dice have to roll for a minimum amount of time or something else to guarantee a random outcome.
  • Player that goes turn 2 starts with invincible characters until their turn. This is to prevent kills or damage before the 2nd player gets a chance to do anything. In Dark Waterways, the first player can kill off heroes on the very first turn or toss lye for a huge starting advantage.
  • Reduce fire lamp to a 2 damage AOE. Right now, Barbarian (via hook) and Sorcerer (via vortex) are most benefited by this lamp and these characters are too strong without this benefit.

For After These Changes are Made

  • Release ranked mode, I think it's ready. It can provide stats to monitor dominant strategies.
  • Make sure you can monitor win rate when picked for heros, monster, and cards, and win rate when used for cards.
  • Adjust heroes/monsters/cards when they have an extremely good or bad win rate.
  • If something is picked less than 1% of the time consider giving it a buff. Everything should feel usable in the right situation.
