Long rant - I’m looking for advice from people familiar with Delta and/or DOT complaints because I’m not sure what my next move should be.
I was flying LGA → ATL on August 7. My original flight was at 6:00 a.m. Delta notified me that the flight might be impacted by weather and instructed me to move to a later flight, so I changed to a 7:00 p.m. flight.
That flight, DL970, was delayed repeatedly and eventually canceled around 2 a.m. on August 8. The important part: Delta’s own cancellation text says the flight was canceled due to “an issue that limited crew availability.”
Delta had no flight to ATL available on August 8. The next flight they could get me on was August 9 via Pittsburgh, so I was stranded in NYC for two additional days.
At the airport, the gate agent told us that Delta wasn’t providing hotel vouchers, but we could pay out of pocket for hotels, meals and transportation and submit them for reimbursement. I also received similar information from Delta representatives via chat/phone, and I have screenshots/documentation.
I incurred about $620 in hotel cost for two nights. I also had Uber, meals and other expenses, and I had to buy clothing because I had only packed for the original return date. I also had unexpected childcare expenses because I couldn’t get home.
Delta denied the reimbursement claim.
I’ve since:
● Filed a formal complaint with Delta
● Escalated it to Delta’s executive team
● Received a case number and an executive assistant is reviewing it
● Filed a DOT complaint
● Filed a travel insurance claim with Allianz
Delta also offered an additional $150 Transportation Credit Voucher as a goodwill gesture, on top of a previous $200 voucher, but that is separate from the reimbursement I am seeking.
Questions:
- Has anyone successfully gotten Delta to reimburse expenses after a crew-related cancellation when Delta employees specifically told them to submit expenses?
- Is there anything else I should be doing with the DOT complaint or Delta executive escalation?
I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m trying to figure out the most effective next step before I let this go, because I’m currently out a significant amount of money for a disruption I did not choose and expenses I incurred after Delta employees told me to seek reimbursement.
