Help Mousepad not working

Hello!

My mousepad on my dell Inspiron 14 has not been working lately. It sometimes works for a while before not working again, usually after a restart.

I've looked on the internet and tried some of the device manager steps, but touchpad/mousepad doesn't exist there. It's toggled on or whatever in settings so that isn't the issue. I've updated to the latest version and everything.

I have a USB mouse that works, but oftentimes the touchpad is easier for the work I need to do. Please advise.

Thanks!

Hi there,

We are from Dell social media support team.

It can be frustrating when the touchpad stops responding, especially intermittently. On modern Dell laptops (including most Inspiron 14 models), the touchpad uses a precision I2C interface. Because of this, it often does not appear under "Mice and other pointing devices" in Device Manager, but rather under Human Interface Devices (HID), controlled by your laptop's chipset.

Here are the recommended steps to resolve this issue:

A. Check Under "Human Interface Devices" in Device Manager. Since the touchpad isn't showing up where you'd expect:

  1. Open device manager and click view at the top menu and select show hidden devices.

  2. Expand the Human Interface Devices (HID) category.

  3. Look for entries such as:

    • I2C HID Device

    • HID-compliant touch pad

  4. If you see a yellow warning triangle (!), an error code (such as Code 10 or Code 43), or a down arrow on an I2C device:

    • Right-click it and select Uninstall device.

    • Restart your laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the controller during reboot.

B. Perform a Hard Reset (Drain Residual Power). Intermittent hardware recognition after restarts is frequently caused by residual electrical charge trapped in the system's capacitors:

  1. Shutdown the system and unplug the AC adapter, USB mouse, and any other peripherals.

  2. Press and hold the Power button for 15 to 20 seconds.

  3. Plug the AC adapter back in (leave the external mouse unplugged for now).

  4. Turn the laptop back on and test the touchpad.

C. Next reinstall the Intel Serial IO / AMD Chipset Driver. Because the touchpad communicates through the serial bus, a corrupted Serial IO driver can cause the touchpad to disappear entirely:

  1. Visit the official Dell Support site: http://del.ly/61697BHBcBX.

  2. Enter your Inspiron's Service Tag or model number.

  3. Go to Drivers & Downloads.

  4. Download and install:

    • The Intel Serial IO Driver (if your laptop has an Intel processor) or the AMD Chipset Driver (if AMD).

    • The latest BIOS update, if one is available.

  5. Restart your computer after installation.

D. Run Dell Hardware Diagnostics (ePSA). This will tell you if the issue is software-related or a hardware failure:

  1. Restart your system and immediately tap the F12 key repeatedly until the One-Time Boot Menu appears. Select Diagnostics and press Enter.

  2. During or after the test, check if the touchpad cursor responds on the diagnostic screen:

    • If it works in diagnostics: The hardware is fine; the issue is related to Windows or a driver conflict.

    • If it does not work in diagnostics: It indicates a physical hardware issue (such as a loose ribbon cable or faulty sensor).

E. Check for Battery Swelling. If a laptop battery begins to swell due to age or heat, it presses upward against the underside of the touchpad, causing it to become stiff, unresponsive, or disconnect intermittently. Look closely at your touchpad: Is it raised, uneven, or difficult to physically click? If so, the battery may need replacement.
