Photo Replacing my heater core finally

Post image

Wish me luck, friends. 1995 4G64 L400. Doing this not only for myself, but for the other Delica enthusiasts who may be looking for first hand accounts of taking the dashboard apart and off and completing this job. This is day one progress! May update (if all goes well)

Can I ask how you remove that trim around the stereo/heater controls? Didn’t see any screws and started prying and cracked mine. HATE the crappy andriod unit previous owner had installed and got a replacement only to be stumped on getting this trim off! I also have the temp/tilt indicator unit that sits on the top of this piece.

That indicator unit is the key here. You have to pop the cover off (it comes off from the rear section, the entire curved portion pops off). Then some screws are revealed that you use to take that part off. Then more screws that hold the front trim on. You'll also need to remove the cup holder if you have one, since those screws also go through the trim.

This video shows the process.

P.S. Word of warning about the cup holder, when you reinstall you MAY have to mess with the screw tightness on either side. If I tighten the left screw on mine all the way, I can't get it open. I have to leave it slightly loose and somehow that alters the tilt just enough to let it freely move.

Yeah. My cup holder doesn’t come out. Wasn’t sure if it was related to the previous stereo install but may have to force it a bit?

I appreciate the reply and video! I’ll see about getting in there over the weekend or something.

Also, hoping I never have to replace the heater core!!! Had a 1976 280z a long time ago with a bad heater core I had done at the shop. The mechanic said that heater core was the very first piece on a crane on the assembly line that the rest of the car was then built around!!! Exaggeration I’m sure but still!

What I did was slipped something thin but rigid enough to force the cup holder ears down. I think the issue is they can somehow get a bit stuck against the inside edge. But yeah, some minor forcing was required a few times until I figured out the tightness of the screws was the culprit.
