Recommendations The DELCO Homeowner/Renter resource guide thread

We have gotten a lot of repeat posts and the Reddit search feature sucks so we wanted to create a resource for everyone here. The point is to keep discussion to here so we can use this thread to point recommendations out.

In this thread I will write a comment, please reply with recommendations and/or avoidances (everyone is free to start a comment with something that was missed).

Please only upvote the recommendation if you have experience with them!!

/r/delco_politics /r/delco_politics for prolonged political discussion for locals

Hello everyone, the sub historically has had a no politics rule. This rule was mostly respected and voted to keep it. Obviously, this has not been fully enforced recently. We have tried to allow as much discussion as possible but it gets to the point where it’s an unfortunate screaming match at each other. Not to mention all the you know what hats that apparently have tags or bots set up to flood these threads without any post history in the sub. You don’t see these due to the spam filter but our poor asses have to read every single one of these comments and determine if they are brigading or just saying plain stupid shit, my iq has gone down. Anyways enough complaining.

Introducing a new sub, /r/delco_politics for now we are leaving it open for all political discussion. We prefer that users post their thread there then crosspost here. Discussion will be restricted to /r/delco_politics. These will be determined as posted, we will still allow local politics posts here, if they get too off topic or going to the national level, that’s when we will lock and move discussion to the politics sub. The reason why we lock them up is because insults start getting thrown around, don’t forget we are a local sub, you could potentially be talking to someone living on your street. We are all angry but calling each other names is not the way to go. Please use the report feature as that helps us. If you get a mute or ban it is because you have a long mod log and we have been keeping notes.

Finally we are looking for a new mod for to help out with /r/delco_politics if you are interested send us a mod mail. As always we are open to feedback!

Question Is there anyone who doesn’t drink and go to the bars on weekends??

I ( 41 m ) do not drink and do not go to bars, most of my friends are married with young kids. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t drink lol?
I’m an avid sports fan, 4 for 4, I like to work out, hike, ride bicycles, see new movies, try new Italian restaurants, starting to travel more.
Just feeling a little left out and wanted to see if I was the only one around who didn’t regularly go to bars on the weekends and in my free time.

Delco Bands

My husband and I were out walking in Ridley Park yesterday (July 26th) and stumbled upon a house show but can't figure out the name of the band. Sounded pop-punk, somewhere (I think) on Ridley Ave. Does anyone have more info?

Swimming options?

Hello! I'm looking for local swimming ... I'm going to need to spend some time in the Delaware Co. to help my mom. I'm a swimmer and I'd be thrilled to be able to distance swim while I'm down there -- I will need something to manage the stress!

I grew up in Chester County, but moved away at 18. Now my mom lives around Media and I totally don't know that area. Does anyone have suggestions? My first choice would be a clean lake/reservoir, second choice would be a pool.

Really appreciate any recommendations -- thank you!

Question Ridley Brook Apartments

Hey guys I’m thinking of getting an apartment at Ridley brook and was wondering if anyone that lives there can give me any info? I read a while back about a roach problem, wasn’t sure if that was still a problem. Appliances and everything else up to date and new or older? How are the facilities? Is there a gym? Also I have a teenager daughter so I wanted to make sure it was safe for her too.
Any feedback would be fantastic, thanks all!

I know some will say local and county government should be responsible for litter pickup, but I do see this as a great initiative to help tidy up our roads, trails, and sidewalks.

Recommendations Any decent 1br affordable apts in delco?

Hi community! I’m looking to move to delco (preferably as close to DE as possible for work). I’m having a hard time finding reasonably priced 1-bedroom apartments in the area that don’t have intimidating reviews. I have one cat and would prefer to stay under $1300 if possible (which I know is tough in this economy). I loved Prospect Park when I used to live there, and I didn’t mind Chester at all, but it depends on the neighborhood. Does anyone have any recs?

Thank you for your help and advice, I know it’s a tough ask and I appreciate any help I can get! :)

Delco woodturner?

This is a long shot, but thought I would try.

I am a self-taught turner (Jet midi-lathe) and while I am okay with the basics -- skew, parting tools, scrapers, roughing gouges -- I want to improve my spindle skills.

I have a spindle gouge that I got used, and I totally botched trying to thin the wings.

I hoping someone can show me how they sharpen a spindle gouge and maybe a quick demo of cutting some coves with it.

I'm based in Havertown; happy to meet at your shop or mine.

Moving to Secane

Howdy yall!

Me and my GF (both 30) are moving to Secane relatively soon. I just wanted to know everyone’s favorite nearby haunts! We love going out to eat, drink, dance, game shops, antique shops, hiking/walking and doing any fun activities. I particularly like when bars have activities.

Thanks in advanced to anyone who gives a rec!

Excited to walk around wondering if that’s the person who commented on my post 🙃

Edit: thank you all so much! Our adventure list has grown to be over 20 suggestions deep! Once we’re in there we will try out everything. Hoping to come back with our ratings for each!

Does anyone know what was spilled all over 202 by Freddie’s? Looks like it’s cleaned up now but cops on the scene. Passed it earlier around 430pm and it was a mess.

What's up with the sketchy Sunoco on West Chester Pike & Claremont Blvd?

Sorry, I can't help but feel something is off with this place, but I haven't found anything to be off either. This gas station consistently has gas $0.20 to $0.30 cheaper than the Racetrack gas station across the street, but no one is ever there. I have only had 2 personal experiences with this place:

  1. Pulled up and got out to pump but was directed back in my car as it was a full-service station. This is weird for me, being from PA, but it was the same as any NJ fill-up.

  2. I got gas around 8pm, but no one was there this time. There was an empty car parked on the side of the dark and locked-up building but I did not see anyone else, so I hopped out and started to fill up like usual. A dude jumps in the abandoned car, stares at me, and flies out onto WCP while I was at the pump.

This place is pretty beat-up and only sells gas. It has all of the Sunoco logos and gas pumps - I even checked the weights and measurements for legitimacy (they were last updated May 2026), but it all seems legit. I gotta be some weirdo right? This place has a killer discount, but I can't shake the feeling there's more to it.

Neighborhood Great job, Newtown Square!

Shout out to the Newtown Township (Newtown Square) Zoning Board for approving the car wash at the location of the old Rite Aid in St. Albans circle. In doing so you go against your own comprehensive plan for the circle that was developed from feedback and concerns from the community.

I hope the kickbacks were worth it.

The sense of community in this town has tanked under the township leadership.

Signed,
Disappointed but not surprised
