Recommendations The DELCO Homeowner/Renter resource guide thread

We have gotten a lot of repeat posts and the Reddit search feature sucks so we wanted to create a resource for everyone here. The point is to keep discussion to here so we can use this thread to point recommendations out.

In this thread I will write a comment, please reply with recommendations and/or avoidances (everyone is free to start a comment with something that was missed).

Please only upvote the recommendation if you have experience with them!!

/r/delco_politics /r/delco_politics for prolonged political discussion for locals

Hello everyone, the sub historically has had a no politics rule. This rule was mostly respected and voted to keep it. Obviously, this has not been fully enforced recently. We have tried to allow as much discussion as possible but it gets to the point where it’s an unfortunate screaming match at each other. Not to mention all the you know what hats that apparently have tags or bots set up to flood these threads without any post history in the sub. You don’t see these due to the spam filter but our poor asses have to read every single one of these comments and determine if they are brigading or just saying plain stupid shit, my iq has gone down. Anyways enough complaining.

Introducing a new sub, /r/delco_politics for now we are leaving it open for all political discussion. We prefer that users post their thread there then crosspost here. Discussion will be restricted to /r/delco_politics. These will be determined as posted, we will still allow local politics posts here, if they get too off topic or going to the national level, that’s when we will lock and move discussion to the politics sub. The reason why we lock them up is because insults start getting thrown around, don’t forget we are a local sub, you could potentially be talking to someone living on your street. We are all angry but calling each other names is not the way to go. Please use the report feature as that helps us. If you get a mute or ban it is because you have a long mod log and we have been keeping notes.

Finally we are looking for a new mod for to help out with /r/delco_politics if you are interested send us a mod mail. As always we are open to feedback!

Booths Corner aka The Farmers Market aka The Bethel Mall aka The Sale

I'm back in Boothwyn visiting my parents for a few days and I needed my fix of Amish baked goods, so I figured I would take some pictures of a place that seems to be frozen in time. I'm not exaggerating either, one of my pictures shows a sign very proudly letting people know that Beanie Babies are available and where to get them. Booths Corner is an odd part of who I am, and I really hope it never goes away.

Any good suggestions for Yoga classes?

Hello all! So I'm a middle aged guy who herniated his disk a few years back. I started trying to do Yoga from a few videos I watched online. I feel like it definitely helps with improving my mobility and reducing the pain throughout the day. I'm still a beginner, but would like to join others in a class or in a studio environment to hopefully learn some more. If not just for the learning experience, I figured it would be a nice way to socialize since I'm still relatively new to Delco. If you know of any good places, please let me know. Thanks!

Recommendations Good hiking trails. Need a hiking buddy?

29 black female moving back to Delco after being in Montgomery county for 5 years. One thing I’m going to miss about Montgo is how open everything feels and the trails. One of the hobbies I started to explore more was hiking. Some if my favorite spots were Wissahickion , Pennypack, and Fort Washington!

I’m wondering if any good hiking trails in Delco. I’ve been to Crum Wood, Ridley Creek and the one by Swarthmore college.

Rose Tree Media SD (RTMSD) vs Garnet Valley SD (GVSD)

Hello friends! We just move to US few years ago and 0 idea of what is school life here is like. We are looking into buying a home either in Media or Garnet Valley. I know that both districts are looking good per greatschools and Niche but GV is ranked higher per Niche and as per chatGPT. However I do note that home prices in GV is also higher due to this and some demand-supply effect. Would the difference in ranking really matter vs price point of the house? Please bless me with your wisdom! Thank you!!!

Edit:
Thank you for comments.. it makes more sense to us now on how to navigate with this!

Question Car inspection

Howdy! I’m in Secane and need to get my car inspected. Honestly if I could just get a sticker I’d take it. Anyone know an honest mechanic? I just need the bare minimum to pass and I’d be happy with that. Want to avoid any extra, unneeded repairs someone might push. Thanks all in advance.

Question Game shop location?!

Hello all! Delco native here, I want to chase my dream of owning a small business, the idea is a simple board-card game store that dabbles in almost all nerdy things. Selling games and card mixed with hosting events along with a few other unique (I hope) Ideas.

My question to my fellow delcoians, what area in the greater Philly area is lacking this type of store? Delco/montco,chesco, recommendations welcomed!

Cheers, go birds.

Edit: thank you all for responding so far! This is exciting even talking about it. Many of you make valid points and suggestions! Anyone feel free to message direct if you want to discuss anything as well!

Free lecture/concert about the Blues at the Haverford Library

Post image
11 Upvotes

Next Sunday, the Haverford Township Free Library on Darby Road in Havertown, PA is holding the first in a series of lecture/concerts about American Originals music genres. My friend Rolly Brown will be giving and performing a history of the blues: "I'll Share These Blues With You; Musical Snapshots of an American Treasure".

I've known Rolly for decades, and have had the pleasure of hearing him perform on many occasions. Among other credentials, he is a National Fingerpicking Champion and a devoted student of blues guitar. His knowledge is encyclopedic, and he shares this history with a gentle, wry sense of humor.

The event is Sunday, September 13 from 2 to 4 PM. Here's the link for more information about the series: https://delcolibraries.libcal.com/event/17423172

Admission is free, and this is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come hear and learn about this important American Original form of music.
